When Canon announced the Rebel T2i/550D earlier this year, it turned some heads since it came relatively quickly following the T1i/500D. Many people also commented that it seemed like the 7Ds smaller sibling with the features it packed into a smaller body. Though Jean from Aquatica tipped his hand yesterday, today Aquatica today officially announced the AT2i housing for the Rebel T2i/550D. The announcement reveals some features divers will appreciate, such as a retractable lens release lever in order to be able to remove the camera body from the housing with both the lens and gear attached. The housing supports a variety of strobes - including Nikonos, Ikelite, S6 and fiber optical connections based on what you would like to use. The housing is one of the smallest and lightest that Aquatica has made, with a retail price of $1,999.

Wow, awesome stuff here by NauticamUSA.com. Yeah first time i’ve heard about them too! Maybe because I was never crazy enough to take my gear underwater. The rig looks pretty sick and they’ve got something for the Canon 7D as well. I believe there is a Nikon D90 in there too, but who cares. JK Nikonians!! (sorta). Hopefully they’ll be flattered that i’ve ‘borrowed’ a few images from their galleries to showcase it to you to guys. Hey it’s free advertising Nauticam, now if only I can get one to review…hint hint nudge nudge. You can find way more cool photos of these rigs in the water, cool video samples, plus other housings at their website http://nauticamusa.com

Nauticam's newest housing will be for the Canon T2i, currently one of the hottest cameras. Other than the Ikelite housing, this is the only other option for T2i users hoping to take their camera uderwater. This is a top combo for those looking to enter the world of underwater SLR photography.

The Canon EOS 550D is a difficult product to categorize. Ostensibly designed to appeal to first-time DSLR buyers and enthusiasts, it offers a lot more technology, and at a higher price, than we might expect for a camera aimed squarely at this sector. Although it might seem logical for the 550D to replace the EOS 500D, the older camera is set to continue in Canon's lineup, which leaves the 550D pinched between its entry-level (represented by the still-current EOS 1000D and the 500D) and nominally enthusiast (the EOS 50D) peers. Confusingly however, apart from build quality (which is all but identical to the EOS 500D), the 550D has more in common with the prosumer EOS 7D, and - perhaps even more confusingly - it out-specifies the EOS 50D in many areas.
