Without the ability to keep secrets, individuals lose the capacity to distinguish themselves from others, to maintain independent lives, to be complete and autonomous persons. This does not mean that a person actually has to keep secrets to be autonomous, just that she must possess the ability to do so. The ability to keep secrets implies the ability to disclose secrets selectively, and so the capacity for selective disclosure at one’s own discretion is important to individual autonomy as well. Secrecy is a form of power. The ability to protect a secret, to preserve one’s privacy, is a form of power. The ability to penetrate secrets, to learn them, to use them, is also a form of power. Secrecy empowers, secrecy protects, secrecy hurts. The ability to learn a person’s secrets without his or her knowledge — to pierce a person’s privacy in secret — is a greater power still. Cell phones are like a drivers license. It is really hard to function in the modern world without one, but they reveal a lot of information about you that you might not want to share.

Surveying in caves is a hard and thankless task. We spend hours in uncomfortable locations working to obtain the data we bring back to create cave maps. However in several cases all the hard work put into the survey and sketching of caves has been lost. Either the data itself is lost due to a catastrophe or negligence or the project leader loses interest in the cave, project, or in several cases, caving altogether, and walks away with data. I started caving and mapping in Rockcastle and Jackson Counties Kentucky. Over time I saw many great mapping efforts disappear as people went on to other things, and the maps and data were not preserved. This site was started as an example how the internet can preserve and make available data over long periods of time. It started with Rockcastle and Jackson maps that I had worked on, then friends maps, and now is trying to capture the entire wealth of cave maps in these counties as well as surrounding counties.

Heute möchte ich euch zeigen, wie ihr mit einer Synology NAS eine private Cloud einrichten könnt. Dazu installieren wir auf einem Synology NAS System die beliebte Nextcloud Umgebung als Data Storage System. Was könnt ihr damit tun? Pat Delany’s Open Source Machine Tools project is featured in Make Magazine #37! Our goal, simply stated: to help anyone, anywhere, build almost anything, using the stuff that’s already around them. We make essential machine tools — what people use to create essentially every manufactured item in our world — affordable to build with materials available in villages and urban slums everywhere, using open-source plans. This project is bottom-up rather than top-down: we want to help local artisans change their lives, their communities and their local economies. Learn more about our history and the idea of do-it-yourself global development, read the key documents behind our plans, get involved in this open source project, or click on any of the specific projects listed below. A re-discovered way to quickly make inexpensive but accurate machine tools for use in developing countries and in trade schools and shops everywhere. We made modern construction practical by replacing the original poured, non shrinking metal with cement grout.

The intent of this guide is to reduce cognitive friction when scanning code from different authors. It does so by enumerating a shared set of rules and expectations about how to format PHP code. The style rules herein are derived from commonalities among the various member projects. When various authors collaborate across multiple projects, it helps to have one set of guidelines to be used among all those projects. Thus, the benefit of this guide is not in the rules themselves, but in the sharing of those rules.

A product requirements document (PRD) is a document containing all the requirements to a certain product.
It is written to allow people to understand what a product should do. A PRD should, however, generally avoid anticipating or defining how the product will do it in order to later allow interface designers and engineers to use their expertise to provide the optimal solution to the requirements. PRDs are most frequently written for software products, but can be used for any type of product and also for services. Typically, a PRD is created from a user's point-of-view by a user/client or a company's marketing department (in the latter case it may also be called Marketing Requirements Document (MRD)). The requirements are then analysed by a (potential) maker/supplier from a more technical point of view, broken down and detailed in a Functional Specification (sometimes also called Technical Requirements Document).

Mounting an NFS (Network File System) share using a Unix-like operating system is pretty straight forward. But how do you mount an NFS share of a UNIX system from a Windows 10 machine? Keep reading to find out how. With that said let’s install the Services for NFS feature and mount an NFS share. The first thing we need to do is install the NFS Client which can be done by following the steps below: With the default options you will only have read permissions when mounting a UNIX share using the anonymous user. We can give the anonymous user write permissions by changing the UID and GID that it uses to mount the share.

Complete the following steps to mount NFS on a Windows client: The UID and GID values are set in the Windows Registry and are global on the Windows NFS client box. This solution might not work well if your Windows box has multiple users who each need access to NFS with their own permissions, but there is no obvious way to avoid this limitation. To set up the Windows NFS client, mount the cluster, map a network drive, and configure the user ID (UID) and group ID (GID). The Windows client must access NFS using a valid UID and GID from the Linux domain. Mismatched UID or GID will result in permissions problems when MapReduce jobs try to access files that were copied from Windows over an NFS share. Because of Windows directory caching, there may appear to be no .snapshot directory in each volume's root directory. As a workaround, force Windows to re-load the volume's root directory by updating its modification time (for example, by creating an empty file or directory in the volume's root directory).

When setting up the NAS, you need to enter in a server name. This becomes the hostname. How can I set a FQDN (i.e. NAS-Store.example.com) without it being wiped out all the time? You can just setup a ddns name and use it to get access (I'm guessing you wanna use that name to gain outside access to your NAS). There is a DDNS tab in Control Panel > External Access. Register your name there. I don't need to worry about DDNS. That is not an issue. As I run an internal DNS on my network, I can type in the FQDN of the NAS and get to it OK. That's all fine. I would just like to be able to give the NAS an FQDN and an SSL certificate to match it, so I do not get any warnings that the cert is incorrect for the NAS when I have external clients use the Cloud Station. I don´t you buy a domain name, setup it up by using DynDns client and give the domain name to your clients to connect to, and then set your internal DNS with that same domain name to point to the internal IP, and also set the name of the NAS with that domain name.

A while ago I covered why I decided to purchase a NAS drive, specifically a Synology NAS. It has been a couple months since I owned this device and I’m happier than ever about this purchase. Those consumer grade NAS are intended for the small amount of device to access files from the local network, this also means if you are away from local network accessing those files will be limited to the web interface. While Synology has an excellent Web UI that lets you do many basic tasks, but access file through none traditional Web UI is cumbersome. Only it would be nice if you can mount and map the same network drives even while you are away from your home’s local network.

In light of the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, a new trend has developed among some small publicly-traded companies in the U.S. In the past few months, several listed companies that have previously had zero ties to the blockchain or digital currencies have announced that they would move into the cryptocurrencies business in one form or another. These announcements, in turn, caused the share prices of many of these small cap stocks to rally and in some cases more than double - without any substantial evidence that the companies were actually involved in blockchain-related activities. In other words, it appears some companies have chosen to pump their share prices by jumping onto the cryptocurrency bandwagon.
