When we wrote about Miguel Olivares Mendez in the 2017 edition of Spotlight on Young Researchers, the researcher was working on an FNR JUMP project, focussing on developing algorithms for autonomous drones. The robotics scientist has continued to build his research career in Luxembourg – 5 years later, Miguel is a Professor leading a research group with a focus on space robotics. Luxembourg start-up LuxAI, with their socially assistive robot QTrobot, has been making waves on an international level since it was created. The FNR has supported the project from its inception through the development of a prototype, helping bridge the gap between lab and commercialisation. We speak to LuxAI founders Dr Pouyan Ziafati and Dr Aida Nazarikhorram about the LuxAI journey so far; how QTrobot came to be and how parents can now have a QTrobot at home.

Bye Aerospace’s eFlyer 800 is a clean-sheet design that will carry eight people, including one or two pilots. The 800 will have two motors, powered by a grid of electric cells across the airframe. This is the third model in a lineup of electric planes from the Denver-based aerospace firm, but the first with two motors. The eFlyer 2 is a two-seater for professional flight training that was developed when the company launched in 2014, and the eFlyer 4, a four-seater for air taxi and advanced training, came later. Both models have more than 360 orders each. “The eFlyer 800 is the first all-electric propulsion technology airplane that achieves twin-turboprop performance and safety with no CO2 and extremely low operating costs,” said CEO George E. Bye in a statement. The eight-seat aircraft will be competing against turboprops with much higher operating costs, but will have similar interior space and accommodations. Putting Raspberry Pi boards into space is nothing new, but the method of achieving orbit often differs. While the Astro Pi computers headed for the final frontier onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, there are some decidedly lower-tech approaches including, as detailed on the Tindie blog, this $45 RP2040 flight computer from Finnish designer Dan Invents. Combining the RP2040 controller with an altimeter, accelerometer, temperature sensor, and enough juice to power two servo motors (for parachute deployment on the way down), the Rockit (rocket operation computing kit) weighs just 0.18oz (5g) and measures 1.73 x 0.9 x 0.35 inches (44 x 22 x 9 mm). It comes with an open-source firmware pre-installed, and can be tinkered with and updated over micro USB. There's a 16-position rotary switch for adjusting parameters such as start and end positions for the servos, and also a buzzer, so you can more easily find your rocket after a successful landing. Compared to the 2MHz Apollo guidance computer that deposited Neil Armstrong on the Moon, the RP2040 is a powerhouse, and should be more than capable of altitude-based parachute opening and logging flight data from the sensors to a micro SD card. The kit, which costs $44.99, comes with just the board and its pin headers - you need to supply your own battery, servos, cabling, micro SD card and space suit.

Star Citizen is a multiplayer space trading and combat simulation game that is in development. The game is being developed and published by Cloud Imperium Games for Microsoft Windows. A spiritual successor to 2003's Freelancer, Star Citizen is being led by director Chris Roberts. The game was announced on October 18, 2012 through a successful Kickstarter campaign which drew in over US$2 million. Pre-production of the game began in 2010, with production starting in 2011. Star Citizen has become highly criticized during its long production process, both for the fact that there is still no clear release date and for the challenges backers who have abandoned the project have faced in receiving a refund. The launch of the game was originally anticipated for 2014, but was repeatedly delayed. In 2013, Cloud Imperium Games began releasing parts of the game, known as "modules", to provide players with the opportunity to experience gameplay features prior to release. The latest of these modules, known as the "Persistent Universe", was made available for testing to pre-purchasers in 2015 and continues to receive updates. No projected date for the commercial release of Star Citizen is currently given.

This is a Python wrapper for TA-LIB based on Cython instead of SWIG. From the homepage: TA-Lib is widely used by trading software developers requiring to perform technical analysis of financial market data. The original Python bindings included with TA-Lib use SWIG which unfortunately are difficult to install and aren't as efficient as they could be. Therefore this project uses Cython and Numpy to efficiently and cleanly bind to TA-Lib -- producing results 2-4 times faster than the SWIG interface.

I built a simple app with 10 different JavaScript frameworks... Learn the pros and cons of each JS framework before building your next app. Notably, Angular didn't really stand out here, and I want to explain why. It is not geared towards simplicity for singular developers. It is engineered to be maintainable in large and complex projects, and to optimize the hell out of the app. When it's all said and done, Angular is a great framework for large apps with multiple developers working on it due to it's structured layout and intentionally opinionated setup. I started using Svelte the other night and was blown away with how lightweight and easy it was. I've always loved Vue and Svelte feels like an even more lightweight version of Vue.
