When we wrote about Miguel Olivares Mendez in the 2017 edition of Spotlight on Young Researchers, the researcher was working on an FNR JUMP project, focussing on developing algorithms for autonomous drones. The robotics scientist has continued to build his research career in Luxembourg – 5 years later, Miguel is a Professor leading a research group with a focus on space robotics. Luxembourg start-up LuxAI, with their socially assistive robot QTrobot, has been making waves on an international level since it was created. The FNR has supported the project from its inception through the development of a prototype, helping bridge the gap between lab and commercialisation. We speak to LuxAI founders Dr Pouyan Ziafati and Dr Aida Nazarikhorram about the LuxAI journey so far; how QTrobot came to be and how parents can now have a QTrobot at home.

I don't sail but this idea interests me. Why couldn't a turbine of some description be fitted to the underside or even integrated into the keel to add to energy produced That is called an hydrogenerator and many oceanic sailboats use them. On the Vendee Globe, the non stop sailing race around the world most boats have two. They are expensive, with a price around 4/5000 euros. Finally somebody is working actively in what seems to be an obvious way to generate electric electricity on sailboats: Photo-voltaic sails. Till now the technology did not allow for panels flexible enough to allow that but on last years the technology has evolved a lot. It is already possible and it will not be expensive in the future. At least a sail manufacturer is working already actively on that, the UKsails France branch.

Plotting world circumnavigation routes is a lot easier than it sounds. There are cruising boats LITERALLY all over the world. There are boats in the Northwest passage (up and over Canada), in the Antarctic, and everywhere in between. There are a few key things to take into consideration, but 95%* of circumnavigation routes follow the same general course. There are two major restrictions put on us by our vessel insurance; stay out of highly pirated areas and stay out of named storm zones. Insurance restrictions come with the option to ignore them. You can always go to these restricted places, BUT if something happens, your insurance will not be covered. Another option is that you can pay significantly more to be covered in these places as well. We have made the choice for ourselves to follow the restrictions set by our insurance. By definition, piracy is the act of attacking and robbing ships at sea. By that main definition, the Caribbean is one of the worst places for piracy. Petty theft of boats and their tenders is a major issue in some parts of the Caribbean, and steps should be taken to protect yourself and your assets.

EcoRocket is designed around two main features: cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness and it is designed to launch commercial payloads starting with 2021. The EcoRocket Heavy will follow. The first two stages are reusable and are using water-based propulsion technology that generates water vapours through cold reaction. The expandable third stage uses conventional hot rocket propulsion and it's ignited at high altitude, above the thick atmosphere. Both the first and second stage use the high efficiency aerospike engine technology. The whole rocket uses 86% water-based propellant. ARCA already tested this technology at full-scale. EcoRocket is sea-launched, directly from the sea surface, the first sea trials taking place on the Black Sea, in July 2021. EcoRocket is competing in the European Commission's 10 million Euros competition that aim to stimulate the creation of new, small orbital launchers that are cost effective and friendly to the environment.

Knitted-goods site Dukyana‘s chunky mohair tube scarf, spotted by Bustle, sells for $280, and though it looks like it would require an entire village to knit it, the garment is ready for your wearing within 10 to 14 days after purchase. Whether you decide to rock the armless Snuggie in public (and no-doubt garner some looks for your lewk) or just use it in the comfort of your own home, it might be dream come true for constantly cold folks. Just think about it: You’ll no longer have to deal with your blanket slipping off mid-binge-watch (but you will have trouble when it comes time to let Netflix know via remote that you are, indeed, still watching). And blanket scarves that fail at fight off super-chilly winds? A problem of the past. Plus, the fabric looks flexible enough to allow a few sets of calf-raises or even crunches.

The 1990s were definitely a time when the anti-smoking forces got the upper hand over the enemy for good. Airports became 95% no-smoking zones. In New York State, where I lived, Governor Mario Cuomo passed the New York Clean Indoor Air Act in 1990, which banned smoking in many environments, including stores, taxis, certain restaurants, schools, and most significantly, the majority of worksites. Once a normal smoker working at a normal job couldn’t smoke in the office, the jig was pretty much up. Years later came the stringent requirements in New York for separate and ventilated smoking facilities. With the advent of no-smoking signs and especially cancer warnings on cigarette packaging, a British entrepreneur named B.J. Cunningham spotted an opportunity to make a buck and also to be clever while doing it. In 1991 Cunningham started the Enlightened Tobacco Company—still have to chuckle at that name—which sold a product called Death Cigarettes with suitably doomy black packaging with white lettering and a skull and crossbones. The black packages contained the regulars, the white ones had Death Lights, jokingly referred to as Slow Death. The cigarettes themselves also had a demure little skull and crossbones on them.
Death Cigarettes founder B.J. Cunningham
Far from flinching at the “required” health warnings, Death Cigarettes positively reveled in them, with mordantly amusing messages like “It’s your funeral” and “Too bad, you’re gonna die.” One of their slogans was “The Grim Reaper, don’t come cheaper,” and posters for Death Cigarettes boldly bore the messages “SERIAL KILLER” and “BLOW YOURSELF AWAY.”

Putting Raspberry Pi boards into space is nothing new, but the method of achieving orbit often differs. While the Astro Pi computers headed for the final frontier onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, there are some decidedly lower-tech approaches including, as detailed on the Tindie blog, this $45 RP2040 flight computer from Finnish designer Dan Invents. Combining the RP2040 controller with an altimeter, accelerometer, temperature sensor, and enough juice to power two servo motors (for parachute deployment on the way down), the Rockit (rocket operation computing kit) weighs just 0.18oz (5g) and measures 1.73 x 0.9 x 0.35 inches (44 x 22 x 9 mm). It comes with an open-source firmware pre-installed, and can be tinkered with and updated over micro USB. There's a 16-position rotary switch for adjusting parameters such as start and end positions for the servos, and also a buzzer, so you can more easily find your rocket after a successful landing. Compared to the 2MHz Apollo guidance computer that deposited Neil Armstrong on the Moon, the RP2040 is a powerhouse, and should be more than capable of altitude-based parachute opening and logging flight data from the sensors to a micro SD card. The kit, which costs $44.99, comes with just the board and its pin headers - you need to supply your own battery, servos, cabling, micro SD card and space suit.

Living north of the Arctic Circle meant learning fear and its power to motivate in the face of danger—whether from a bear or climate change. How long did I walk in the footsteps of the bear? It was a warm day, 20 years ago and 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the sky translucent blue behind low mountains. The tundra, just starting to turn autumn crimson and saffron, held all my attention. Eventually, I looked down at the trail. And there: the ovoid front paw prints, claws puncturing a constellation into the mud inches above each toe, trailed by back feet as long as two hand spans. Grizzly. Next to them, indentations from my boots. Both filling slowly with water.

The bomber and flight jackets were first produced with an intention of providing some lightweight work wear that would be suitable in every way for the military personnel. They have a timeline record which shows the changes in style and modifications that have occurred in their design. Flight jackets have seen design modifications from the time of invention when they were mainly produced for use by the military men, to contemporary times where they now qualify for use as cool casual outfits for almost anybody. At AVI LEATHER we have done our best to create a compilation of the some of the most important flight jackets that have been, together with their basic descriptions and some illustrations.

The area described stretches from Southend Pier to Hole Haven Creek, and is home to a couple of thousand shoal draft yachts and other shallow craft. These are either moored off the foreshore or tucked up in the muddy little creeks. One thing they all have in common is that they take the ground when the tide leaves (except perhaps for a few fishing boats moored at Holehaven and in Ray Gut). In general the area is not suitable for deeper draft fin keelers, except for a couple of temporary anchorages, a long way from any facilities. The town of Southend is fronted by extensive drying mud flats that reach almost to the end of the pier. A deepwater gutway runs inwards towards Leigh on Sea and branches off a short way to Smallgains Creek, which houses a boatyard with mud berth moorings at the eastern extremity of Canvey Island. Another arm continues past Two Tree Island where many small craft are moored in semi shelter and then winds and twists it's way up Benfleet Creek, where there are two yacht clubs with extensive drying moorings and a boatyard, (that nestle in total shelter no matter what the wind is doing).

Got lucky enough to snag a truckload of treated lumber on Craigslist for FREE. Had a friend with a hookup for the barrels for FREE. Already had nails and screws. Had to buy a few bags of quikrete and a 4x4 for the ramp posts, and some hardware for connecting the ramp to the posts and the ramp to the dock. All in all I have put in about $40 (and a week's worth of evening work at a leisurely pace). Not bad for a 12x14 dock with a 3.5x10 ramp for our half-acre pond!

Bored pile also referred to as drilled shaft at some places is a kind of reinforced-concrete base that holds frameworks carrying heavy vertical loads in place. A bored pile is basically the concrete cast-in-place, which means that the pile is cast on the site of the building. The arrangement varies from other concrete foundation designs, such as spun pile or reinforced concrete square pile foundations, which make use of concrete precast platforms. Bored piling is used extensively for bridge construction, tall buildings, and other large industrial projects, which all require deep and intensive bases. Apart from the foundation systems, Bored piles are also used to build formative underground barriers for earth retention. Piles may be stacked next to each other, with 75 – 150 mm gap in-between— referred to as contiguous pile wall, or they can be positioned in a way that they coincide, creating stable and robust fencing, often used to regulate groundwater movement.

Porn is a big industry. There aren't many sites on the Internet that can rival the traffic of its biggest players. And juggling this immense traffic is tough. But for all of the challenges involved, rarely have I read about the developers who take them on. So I decided to write about my own experience on the job. And juggling this immense traffic is tough. In the world of NVDA (Non Violent Direct Action) there are few defence tactics that can compare with the protest tunnel. Dangerous, laborious and time consuming, tunnelling is the ultimate and desperate tacticof desperate people in desperate times. For how can any but the truly insane wish to voluntarily spend days, weeks, even months, underground, for any other reason than that they profoundly believe that they are right? Laughed at, ridiculed and condemned by the media, the few that fight today's environmental war (be they above or below ground) must have the solace of knowing that at least history will treat them kindly. With so much precious countryside belonging to the many destroyed for the profit of the few how could it possibly be any different? Validity is given to this question when supposedly impartial Members of Parliament make financial gain as company directors on major environmentally destructive projects (i.e. Manchester airport in 1997).

Yes, you can still get the free upgrade from Microsoft Microsoft’s free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users ended a few years ago, but you can still technically upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. While Microsoft has removed the special upgrade offer sites, the company continues to activate Windows 10 licenses for people who upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. ZDNet’s Ed Bott has been testing this method for years, and the free upgrade still works. It’s also really simple for anyone to upgrade from Windows 7, especially as support ends for the operating system today. Assuming your PC supports the minimum requirements for Windows 10, you’ll be able to upgrade from Microsoft’s site.
