Luxembourg makes all public transport free | CNN Travel

https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/luxembourg-free-public-transport/index.html

Saved by uncleflo on February 13th, 2022.

Landlocked Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in Europe, with the highest per capita GDP in the European Union.
Taking up 2,586 square kilometers, Luxembourg is roughly the size of Rhode Island. From the capital of Luxembourg City, Belgium, France and Germany can all be reached by car in half an hour. High housing costs, especially in Luxembourg City, mean more than 180,000 of its workforce commute from those neighboring countries every day. "Luxembourg is a very attractive place for jobs," explains Geoffrey Caruso, a professor at the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research specializing in land use and transportation. But its "booming economy" and high concentration of jobs have led to congestion issues, he says.

A New Approach to 3D Printing a Yacht Hull Mold

http://blog.thermwood.com/en-us/a-new-approach-to-3d-printing-a-yacht-hull-mold

Saved by uncleflo on February 13th, 2022.

Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

The two main areas of interest in the TABARKA are the quarry full of boulders (loaded into the vessel to help her sink quickly). The second is the substantial boiler room. BOOKS | Dylan Evans

Saved by uncleflo on February 12th, 2022.

Imagine you have survived an apocalypse. Civilization as you knew it is no more. What will life be like and how will you cope? In 2006, Dylan Evans set out to answer these questions. He left his job in a high-tech robotics lab, moved to the Scottish Highlands and founded a community called The Utopia Experiment. In this book he tells his own extraordinary story: his frenzied early enthusiasm for this unusual project, the many challenges of post-apocalyptic living, his descent into madness and his gradual recovery. There is a special kind of intelligence for dealing with risk and uncertainty. It doesn’t correlate with IQ and most psychologists fail to spot it because it is found in a disparate group of people such as weather forecasters, professional gamblers and hedge-fund managers. This book shows just how important risk intelligence is.

How to Do a Photo Shoot from Start to Finish, From Planning to Editing

https://petapixel.com/2018/01/10/everything-need-plan-shoot-edit-photoshoot/

Saved by uncleflo on February 12th, 2022.

Photographers Rachel and Daniel of Mango Street have released a 5-part video tutorial series that teaches how to plan a shoot, find a suitable location, secure the ideal model, conduct the shoot, and edit the results. The shoot was conducted using a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Hasselblad x1D. Thoughts on the latter are found in the final video in this series. In this video, learn how to create a mood-board that will guide you through the entire shoot process, keeping you on track. For example, with the shoot being inspired by the French vintage style in the movie Amelie, images from Google of these specific styles were used to inform the stylist via the mood board. With a $300 budget for finding a location, adapting and compromising was definitely on the cards. The photographers look at both the color and texture of a shoot location, as well as the light and interactivity of the area.

Remembering the brilliant hypocrisy of Death Cigarettes | Dangerous Minds

https://dangerousminds.net/comments/remembering_the_brilliant_hypocrisy_of_death_cigarettes

Saved by uncleflo on February 6th, 2022.

The 1990s were definitely a time when the anti-smoking forces got the upper hand over the enemy for good. Airports became 95% no-smoking zones. In New York State, where I lived, Governor Mario Cuomo passed the New York Clean Indoor Air Act in 1990, which banned smoking in many environments, including stores, taxis, certain restaurants, schools, and most significantly, the majority of worksites. Once a normal smoker working at a normal job couldn’t smoke in the office, the jig was pretty much up. Years later came the stringent requirements in New York for separate and ventilated smoking facilities. With the advent of no-smoking signs and especially cancer warnings on cigarette packaging, a British entrepreneur named B.J. Cunningham spotted an opportunity to make a buck and also to be clever while doing it. In 1991 Cunningham started the Enlightened Tobacco Company—still have to chuckle at that name—which sold a product called Death Cigarettes with suitably doomy black packaging with white lettering and a skull and crossbones. The black packages contained the regulars, the white ones had Death Lights, jokingly referred to as Slow Death. The cigarettes themselves also had a demure little skull and crossbones on them.
 Death Cigarettes founder B.J. Cunningham

Far from flinching at the “required” health warnings, Death Cigarettes positively reveled in them, with mordantly amusing messages like “It’s your funeral” and “Too bad, you’re gonna die.” One of their slogans was “The Grim Reaper, don’t come cheaper,” and posters for Death Cigarettes boldly bore the messages “SERIAL KILLER” and “BLOW YOURSELF AWAY.”

Animations make websites look more polished and exciting, and help improve user experience. Explore how the combined potential of SVG and CSS can be leveraged to create animations without relying on external libraries. Animations are a ubiquitous part of the web. Unlike the flashing GIF images that plagued websites in the internet's earlier days, today's animations are more subtle and tasteful. Designers and front-end specialists use them to make websites look more polished, enhance the user experience, call attention to important elements, and convey information. Web developers can benefit from combining the power of SVG and CSS to create animations without using external libraries. This SVG animation tutorial shows how to build custom animations for real-world projects. Before animating SVGs with CSS, developers need to understand how SVGs work internally. Fortunately, it's similar to HTML: We define SVG elements with XML syntax and style them with CSS, just as if they were HTML.

Chinas Vanishing Muslims: Undercover In The Most Dystopian Place In The World - YouTube

China’s Uighur minority live a dystopian nightmare of constant surveillance and brutal policing. At least one million of them are believed to be living in what the U.N. described as a “massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy,” while many Uighur children are taken to state-run orphanages where they're indoctrinated into Chinese customs. The Uighurs' plight has largely been kept hidden from the world, thanks to China’s aggressive attempts to suppress the story at all costs. VICE News’ Isobel Yeung posed as a tourist to gain unprecedented access to China’s western Xinjiang region, which has been nearly unreachable by journalists. She and our crew experienced China’s Orwellian surveillance and harassment first-hand during their time in Xinjiang, and captured chilling hidden-camera footage of eight Uighur men detained by police in the middle of the night. We spoke with members of the Uighur community about their experience in these camps, and about China’s attempts to silence their history and lifestyle under the cover of darkness.

F-Class « YachtWorld UK

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

A well-designed sailing yacht is a thing of pure beauty, here are just 10 of the world’s finest… in my eyes at least! Velsheda
When she was launched in 1933, the J-Class yacht Velsheda represented the cutting edge of technology and sophistication and won races against all the great yachts of her day. However, she only was only used for three seasons and after World War 2 it looked as though none of these great yachts would ever sail again. King George V’s Britannia had already been scuttled south of the Isle of Wight, and Velsheda became a houseboat, firmly embedded into the River Hamble Mud for almost 50 years. In the 1970s she was saved from being cut up for scrap after being bought by a group of enthusiasts led by Bembridge bank manager Royce Pook. She then became the first of the class to be restored – in near original specification – thanks to Yorkshire scrap metal merchant Terry Brabant who bought her in 1984. Further refits after Brabant’s ownership saw her refurbished into the spectacular luxury yacht we see today.

The J Class Association

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

The J Class Association (JCA) was founded to protect the interests of the Class, present and future. To keep the J-Class fleet and races alive and to encourage new build yachts to enter the field, new Class rules were established for the construction of Replica Rebuilds from original plans. One of the key drivers of the J-Class revival was the decision of the J-Class Association to allow aluminium and other materials to be used as a hull construction material. This reinforced the renewed interest among owners to build J-class yachts. After a performance analysis by Gerard Dijkstra of the existing J's as well as the designs that were allowed to be built under the new JCA rules, a specific J Class handicap system was developed in order to enable all yachts built to the J Class designs to race against each other regardless of size, sail area or hull construction.

They say a journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step. For us, rather than a step, our journey began with a leap. We sold everything we didn’t need, cars, computers, motorcycles, furniture — everything. What we couldn’t sell, we donated and we used the money to buy a sailboat. Our boat “Uma” is a 1972 Pearson 36. She is neither fancy and expensive, nor cheap and flimsy—to us, she is perfect. We wanted a name that carried with it the motivation and rational that led us to buy her in the first place. Her name was inspired by the Portuguese number 1 (uma), meaning first or primary. Drones are big business, and thousands of you would have received your very own for Christmas this year. The plummeting cost of components and the ease of buying remote controlled aircraft off the Internet has skyrocketed the use of consumer drones across the globe. Headlines are made every day, whether that’s new drones at CES, drones almost hitting passenger jets, or drones spying on unassuming victims. The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has already prosecuted two drone operators in the UK for breaching safety regulations, with numerous other investigations ongoing. In October, a man was arrested for operating a drone over Manchester City’s football stadium in a match with Tottenham Hotspur.

Fundamentals of Restoration Projects

Saved by uncleflo on November 29th, 2018.

During my three decades as a marine surveyor, I've always been amazed about two aspects of restoring old boats what, in the marine trade, is known as a refit. First is that the people who can best afford to do them, usually don't. Followed by those who can't afford such projects are usually the ones that attempt them. Such projects usually go wrong because the owner failed to appreciate the costs, and to estimate them in advance. There are no good deals on fixer uppers with boats. There is just expensive and more expensive. Money is the name of the game, and if you haven't got it, then it's a mistake to think that you can do a refit on the cheap.

The Making of a DIY Brushless Gimbal With Arduino

This is a story of my third project with cheap gyro and Arduino. After the earlier two projects, Easy Inverted Pendulum and 3D Calligraphy, I have thought of making Camera Gimbal with Arduino. Then I had three policies for the project: Equipped with standard camera bigger than GoPro; Simple as possible with no special device nor kit; Bootstrap: Refer to fewer websites as possible and finish with no imitation. At the start of the project, I had intention of making 2-axis gimbal with Servo Motors. But it has been made clear that it is difficult to see adequate performance using Servo Motor. Consequently a 3-axis gimbal with Brushless Motors and Arduino has been made. INTRODUCTION VIDEO below shows the effectiveness of the DIY gimbal. In the video, pretty noise would be heard suddenly. It is left without any reduction to show strengths and weaknesses of the gimbal. Arbitrary film editing is avoided.

Ricoh has been in the 360-degree camera game for a long time—way before johnny-come-latelies like Samsung and Nikon. Things started back in 2013 with the original Ricoh Theta and now four years later, the company is back with the $430 Theta V. New features include 4K video and spatial audio capture, however, even with all those bells and whistles I’m having a hard getting excited about Ricoh’s new camera. The problem isn’t with the camera itself, it’s the medium. As I think back on the thousands of videos I watched since 2013, not a single 360 video sticks out in my a something truly memorable. Even when I dig a little deeper and consider things like Casey Neistat’s video about droneboarding or a tour through California Extreme with Steve Lin and Drew Scanlon, the source of the white blinking guy meme, I can’t help but think that both of these clips would have been better as boring flat clips.

I want to preserve this moment, not only because it’s the first dive of what promises to be a truly memorable adventure, but also because on my wrist is a very rare watch. I’m wearing a vintage Tornek-Rayville TR-900, a watch built by Blancpain for the United States Navy in the 1960s, and this is likely the only surviving one that has been fully serviced and suitably sealed for modern dive use. Do you like TV ads? How about magazine ads? Do you pay attention to them or do you just skip them? Now let me ask you another question: Do you like stories? Do you enjoy being immersed into an exciting narrative allowing you to escape reality and enter a new world? I like stories. I like to let my brain follow the imaginative flow of a good story and visualise the narrative, the heroes, the actions and happenings of what I am reading, watching or experiencing. As a marketer you are probably used to relying more on hard facts and lists of benefits rather than engaging stories. That might have worked in the Mad Man era, but in the world of real-time, non-stop social interactions and online content it no longer does.
