How Do Interest Rates Work? | Financial Literacy | Investment U

https://investmentu.com/how-do-interest-rates-work/

Saved by uncleflo on September 23rd, 2022.

If you’re buying your first home or getting ready to invest in securities for the first time, you probably have a lot of questions. The first and most important should be, “How do interest rates work?” This is an invaluable first question to ask because it’ll govern how you look at your investment – whether you’re a borrower taking on new debt or an investor calculating ROI. The fact is interest rates are the defining variables that control investments. Even more important than time, interest rates dictate what you can expect to gain from an equity or owe in debt. But they’re not just numbers – they have meaning and purpose. Understanding how interest rates work is your secret to maximizing your choices when it comes to investing. Here’s what you should know about this all-important governing factor. An interest rate is a percentage of a principal value that’s owed in regular intervals over the term of an investment. It’s the cost of borrowing money. Or, if you’re the creditor, it’s your rate of return. An interest rate is what makes lending money lucrative, and it’s a way of determining the cost of borrowing before you decide to take a loan. Here’s a simple example:

Digital photography has changed a lot in the last 20 years (duh). Camera technology has improved dramatically, but so has the software and machines that interpret the fruits of our photographic labors. Somewhere right before the 2010’s, we entered what I think of as the “Photoshop Era.” Adobe Photoshop was starting to gain popularity, and the expression, “photoshop it” started getting thrown around. In fact, in 2008, Merriam Webster added “photoshop” to their dictionary as a verb. What I think happened in this period was that photographers who had been working before the advent of programs like Photoshop pushed back on the whole concept. “Real photographers don’t use Photoshop.” You ever hear that one? I know that I have.

Many homes and small workshops have single stage compressors capable of producing 7bar/100psi pressure for powering hand tools and filling truck tires. These simple compressors use the most basic engineering techniques and are successfully mass produced out in the Far East as a low cost consumer product. It comes as quite a surprise when a dive operation comes to purchase their first high pressure divers breathing air compressor to be met with a price tag approaching that of a family car, and the use of which is surrounded by a pile of legal regulations and maintenance obligations, and competent operator requirements which if not met, will cause several well known phenomena.

Photographers Rachel and Daniel of Mango Street have released a 5-part video tutorial series that teaches how to plan a shoot, find a suitable location, secure the ideal model, conduct the shoot, and edit the results. The shoot was conducted using a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Hasselblad x1D. Thoughts on the latter are found in the final video in this series. In this video, learn how to create a mood-board that will guide you through the entire shoot process, keeping you on track. For example, with the shoot being inspired by the French vintage style in the movie Amelie, images from Google of these specific styles were used to inform the stylist via the mood board. With a $300 budget for finding a location, adapting and compromising was definitely on the cards. The photographers look at both the color and texture of a shoot location, as well as the light and interactivity of the area.

Survey and Cartography Training

Saved by uncleflo on January 18th, 2022.

Surveying in caves is a hard and thankless task. We spend hours in uncomfortable locations working to obtain the data we bring back to create cave maps. However in several cases all the hard work put into the survey and sketching of caves has been lost. Either the data itself is lost due to a catastrophe or negligence or the project leader loses interest in the cave, project, or in several cases, caving altogether, and walks away with data. I started caving and mapping in Rockcastle and Jackson Counties Kentucky. Over time I saw many great mapping efforts disappear as people went on to other things, and the maps and data were not preserved. This site was started as an example how the internet can preserve and make available data over long periods of time. It started with Rockcastle and Jackson maps that I had worked on, then friends maps, and now is trying to capture the entire wealth of cave maps in these counties as well as surrounding counties.

I built the same app 10 times // Which JS Framework is best? - YouTube

I built a simple app with 10 different JavaScript frameworks... Learn the pros and cons of each JS framework before building your next app. Notably, Angular didn't really stand out here, and I want to explain why. It is not geared towards simplicity for singular developers. It is engineered to be maintainable in large and complex projects, and to optimize the hell out of the app. When it's all said and done, Angular is a great framework for large apps with multiple developers working on it due to it's structured layout and intentionally opinionated setup. I started using Svelte the other night and was blown away with how lightweight and easy it was. I've always loved Vue and Svelte feels like an even more lightweight version of Vue.

How to Approach SVG Animations: A CSS Tutorial | Toptal

Saved by uncleflo on January 14th, 2022.

Animations make websites look more polished and exciting, and help improve user experience. Explore how the combined potential of SVG and CSS can be leveraged to create animations without relying on external libraries. Animations are a ubiquitous part of the web. Unlike the flashing GIF images that plagued websites in the internet's earlier days, today's animations are more subtle and tasteful. Designers and front-end specialists use them to make websites look more polished, enhance the user experience, call attention to important elements, and convey information. Web developers can benefit from combining the power of SVG and CSS to create animations without using external libraries. This SVG animation tutorial shows how to build custom animations for real-world projects. Before animating SVGs with CSS, developers need to understand how SVGs work internally. Fortunately, it's similar to HTML: We define SVG elements with XML syntax and style them with CSS, just as if they were HTML.

Themestr.app - Bootstrap Theme Builder and Customizer

https://themestr.app/theme

Saved by uncleflo on January 13th, 2022.

The whole idea of Themestr.app is to make the Bootstrap customization process easier, and allow you to visualize changes along the way. For most users it's designed to be point-and-click. Advanced users can delve into the SASS as desired. It's a 4-step process... There are many, many variables. The variable names are self-explanatory, and the more relevant ones are displayed first. The SASS is automatically generated by Themestr.app. The SASS input is sent to a server-side SASS processor, which outputs the custom CSS theme. Save the CSS output as a .css file such as `theme.css`. To keep the theme file separate and smaller in size, the Bootstrap grid classes are not included in the CSS output. This means you'll need to reference the Bootstrap CSS as usual, and then reference the generated custom `theme.css` after the `bootstrap.css` in the HTML. This allows the `theme.css` to override the `bootstrap.css` with the appropriate classes as defined in the custom theme.

Why are modern 50mm lenses so damned complicated?: Digital Photography Review

https://www.dpreview.com/opinion/9236543269/why-are-modern-50mm-lenses-so-damned-complicated

Saved by uncleflo on May 11th, 2021.

Back in the days when men were iron and ships were wood, there were some things you could rely on. One of those things was your wide-aperture prime lens was a relatively simple double-guass design. Pre-1900, lens designers had already created five of the six lens types that are the basis of what we use today. (The retrofocus lens didn't come around until the 1920s, and zoom lenses, for those who are curious, are basically modified Cooke triplets.) The double gauss has been THE predominant design for wide aperture primes since the late 1800s. Over the years, designers have added additional groups to bring in more light, correct aberrations, and generally make a better lens. But the double gauss part was there in the center of the lens diagram for wide-aperture prime lenses right up until modern times. Name a famous prime lens and it was probably a double gauss: Speed Panchro, Planar, Xenon, Summicron, Takumar, Ultron, and on and on.

There's a lot of boilerplate configuration that can be confusing, especially if you're new to React. Even in a talk trying to show how easy React is to set up, it can be very difficult to try and learn each and every step in the setup process. Not too long after React was first out of beta, the team at Facebook made create-react-app. It was an attempt to make spinning up a (very fully-loaded version of a) React app as simple as typing a single command.

Dangerous, laborious and time consuming, tunnelling is the ultimate and desperate tacticof desperate people in desperate times. For how can any but the truly insane wish to voluntarily spend days, weeks, even months, underground, for any other reason than that they profoundly believe that they are right? Laughed at, ridiculed and condemned by the media, the few that fight today's environmental war (be they above or below ground) must have the solace of knowing that at least history will treat them kindly. With so much precious countryside belonging to the many destroyed for the profit of the few how could it possibly be any different? Validity is given to this question when supposedly impartial Members of Parliament make financial gain as company directors on major environmentally destructive projects (i.e. Manchester airport in 1997).

How many times have you heard that a sail gives lift to drive a boat because, "the air travels faster on the lee side for it has farther to go than it does on the windward side. So the pressures are different and you get lift." Well, that is wrong! Even a perfectly flat thin airfoil, with the same distance on both sides, has lift when it is at an angle to the wind.

Arvel Gentry | North Sails

https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en/art-science-sails/gentry

Saved by uncleflo on April 10th, 2021.

In the first edition of the Art and Science of Sails, written by Tom Whidden, president of North Sails Group, LLC, and Michael Levitt, and published by St. Martin’s Press, the authors used Arvel Gentry’s now famous Bathtub Experiment to demonstrate the existence of Circulation, or a second force, that operates around an airfoil, like a sail, wing, or keel etc. Big picture: it’s the combined effort of these two forces that makes the wind speed up on the leeward side — and thus show low pressure — and slow down on the windward side of a sail — high pressure. Gentry was the Boeing engineer who first taught sailors aerodynamics. These diagrams first appeared in Gentry’s Sail magazine articles. In the Revised Edition, the authors used computer testing to show where the wind speeds up around a sail plan and where it slows down. And why and by how much? Nevertheless, Gentry’s experiment is the standard — still popular on the web — and it was left it out of the Revised Edition with trepidation, but we linked in the book to this web page.
