Docker Basics: How to Use Dockerfiles – The New Stack

https://thenewstack.io/docker-basics-how-to-use-dockerfiles/

Saved by uncleflo on January 16th, 2022.

By using a Docker image, it is not only possible to deploy one container after another, it’s quite easy. Once you’ve pulled the image from a registry (such as Docker Hub), each container can then be deployed with a single docker command. But what happens when you find yourself having to deploy numerous containers (each for a different purpose) from the same image? All of a sudden the management of those containers can get a bit cumbersome. Say, for example, you pull down the latest Ubuntu image for development. Before you can develop with that container, there are a number of modifications you want to make to the image (such as upgrading software and adding the necessary development packages for the job at hand). For this, you could manually edit each image as needed (creating a new image for each necessary variation on the theme), or you could construct a Dockerfile for each variation. Once you have your Dockerfile constructed, you can quickly build the same image over and over, without having to take the time to do it manually. Carefully crafted Dockerfiles can save you considerable time and effort.

Can Windows tell me what is using my USB drive? - Super User

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Being the good citizen I am, I left-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in my taskbar, and select my USB drive to dismount. Then I get the message: Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. Of course, being the Operating System, it knows exactly what applications are using my device. So why won't it tell me? Or is there a way that I can find out?

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded. The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded. The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

Did you know Windows 10 has a hidden screen recording utility? With it, you can record a video of your actions in just about any Windows app, whether it's you want to capture gameplay or create a tutorial for someone on using Microsoft Office. Here's how it works. The new video recording tool is part of the Xbox app that comes installed by default in Windows 10. It's really easy to use and although it isn't as feature rich as dedicated video and screen capture tools like Snagit or Camtasia, it is free and great for quick and dirty screen recording.

Comparing x264 “RF” settings in Handbrake (examples) | mattgadient.com

Saved by uncleflo on January 6th, 2019.

Here, I’m taking a look at various RF settings in Handbrake, both in terms of visuals and filesize. I started with encodes from the “24” DVD (Season 6, Episode 1). If you have the same DVD and are looking to reproduce this test, the following settings were used: I tested the following RF values (listed in Handbrake under “Constant Quality”: 0, 10, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32 I’ll start with a few screenshots at different RF values. There’s a video below too, but it comes with a bit of a caveat so might not show everything well for you. Pictures should work for nearly everyone. Note that the first one (RF0) is for reference (lossless). Worth noting that x264’s psychovisual enhancements (trellis, etc) do a pretty good job of keeping detail where you’d notice it (the face), at the expense of the stuff you normally wouldn’t notice while watching (like those background areas). Of course, this only goes so far – once the RF value is high enough, there’s no saving Jack’s facial features from the effects of compression!

ISO 12233 Test Chart

https://stephen-westin.com/misc/res-chart.html

Saved by uncleflo on January 6th, 2019.

In 2000, the International Standards Organization adopted ISO Standard 12233: Photography -- Electronic still-picture cameras - Resolution measurements for the measurement of camera resolution. This standard is protected by copyright, but the design of the associated test chart seems not to be protected; its description has been available on the Web in an Excel spreadsheet. I have semi-manually converted this to an Adobe Illustrator file which is displayed here. In 2014 and again in 2017, the ISO revised the standard and the chart below was replaced by several new ones. Those new charts are not available here. In principle, you should be able to print this chart and perform resolution tests on your camera. The reality isn't that simple; there are lots of subtleties having to do with focus distance, quality and contrast of your printer, evenness of illumination, surface reflections, etc.

GraspingTech | How to Mount an NFS Share Using a Windows 10 Machine

https://graspingtech.com/mount-nfs-share-windows-10/

Saved by uncleflo on January 3rd, 2019.

Mounting an NFS (Network File System) share using a Unix-like operating system is pretty straight forward. But how do you mount an NFS share of a UNIX system from a Windows 10 machine? Keep reading to find out how. With that said let’s install the Services for NFS feature and mount an NFS share. The first thing we need to do is install the NFS Client which can be done by following the steps below: With the default options you will only have read permissions when mounting a UNIX share using the anonymous user. We can give the anonymous user write permissions by changing the UID and GID that it uses to mount the share.

Mounting NFS on a Windows Client

https://mapr.com/docs/51/DevelopmentGuide/c-mounting-nfs-on-a-windows-client.html

Saved by uncleflo on January 3rd, 2019.

Complete the following steps to mount NFS on a Windows client: The UID and GID values are set in the Windows Registry and are global on the Windows NFS client box. This solution might not work well if your Windows box has multiple users who each need access to NFS with their own permissions, but there is no obvious way to avoid this limitation. To set up the Windows NFS client, mount the cluster, map a network drive, and configure the user ID (UID) and group ID (GID). The Windows client must access NFS using a valid UID and GID from the Linux domain. Mismatched UID or GID will result in permissions problems when MapReduce jobs try to access files that were copied from Windows over an NFS share. Because of Windows directory caching, there may appear to be no .snapshot directory in each volume's root directory. As a workaround, force Windows to re-load the volume's root directory by updating its modification time (for example, by creating an empty file or directory in the volume's root directory).

Setting a FQDN for the NAS - Synology Forum

https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=131359

Saved by uncleflo on December 23rd, 2018.

When setting up the NAS, you need to enter in a server name. This becomes the hostname. How can I set a FQDN (i.e. NAS-Store.example.com) without it being wiped out all the time? You can just setup a ddns name and use it to get access (I'm guessing you wanna use that name to gain outside access to your NAS). There is a DDNS tab in Control Panel > External Access. Register your name there. I don't need to worry about DDNS. That is not an issue. As I run an internal DNS on my network, I can type in the FQDN of the NAS and get to it OK. That's all fine. I would just like to be able to give the NAS an FQDN and an SSL certificate to match it, so I do not get any warnings that the cert is incorrect for the NAS when I have external clients use the Cloud Station. I don´t you buy a domain name, setup it up by using DynDns client and give the domain name to your clients to connect to, and then set your internal DNS with that same domain name to point to the internal IP, and also set the name of the NAS with that domain name.

SpaceSniffer - Visualizing Layout Disk Space

http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/download.html

Saved by uncleflo on December 20th, 2018.

SpaceSniffer is a freeWare (donations are welcome) and portable tool application that lets you understand how folders and files are structured on your disks. By using a Treemap visualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are placed on your devices. Treemap concept was invented by Prof. Ben Shneiderman, who kindly permitted the use of his concept into this tool. Start a scan process and see the overall situation. Bigger are the elements on the view, bigger are folders and files on your disk. You need more detail on a big folder? Just single click on it. The selected element will be detailed with its content. Need more and more detail? Keep selecting elements and they'll discover their secrets to you. Need a larger view of a small folder? Then double click on it, and it'll zoom to the full extent of the view. If you need to understand why no more free space is left on media, keep following bigger elements. Maybe you want to focus only on particular file types... ok. Just type the file type on the filter field (example: *.jpg) and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files.
