The InterProtect® products were introduced in 1985 for the repair and prevention of gelcoat blisters and quickly became the product of choice for professionals and do-it yourselfers alike. In the ensuing years it has become the standard by which everything else is measured. A study undertaken in 2001 reported that boats with InterProtect System on the bottom had a higher resale value than boats that did not. InterProtect has proven itself to be a universal primer. Below the waterline it can be used for corrosion protection on all underwater metals for hulls, keels, trim tabs and running gear as well as for blister protection and as part of the Ultimate No Sand System for new fiberglass boats. Above the waterline InterProtect is used on fiberglass and all metals. The InterProtect System was designed to repair hulls which have experienced gelcoat blistering. However, the best time to attack hull blistering is before it happens. Taking preventative action before a problem occurs greatly reduces the likelihood of an expensive repair and has been shown to increase resale value of your boat. If you’re buying a new boat, protect your investment with the InterProtect System before it ever goes into the water.

The club was founded at the end of 2017 by active yachtsmen of Cyprus, athletes and skippers, keen on sailing people. Question: What is your preference regarding the best place to mount a radar antenna? As far as we can tell from the pictures of Morgan’s Cloud you have mounted yours on a pole aft. Our previous experience with radars tells us that the antenna should be as high and free as possible. Wouldn’t a radar antenna mounted on the mast just above the first spreaders give better range and a more detailed radar picture than if it were mounted lower? It also appears from the pictures that your antenna isn’t mounted in a way that makes it able to tilt so that it can compensate for heel of the boat when sailing. Answer: First off, we should say that we view radar as the most important piece of electronic equipment on Morgan’s Cloud—yes, more important than GPS, since we can find our way with a compass and sextant but we can’t see unlit objects at night or through fog—so we have given a lot of thought to the position and installation of our radar scanner. We prefer a pole mounted aft for the scanner over mast mounting.

A New Approach to 3D Printing a Yacht Hull Mold

Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

De Sixhaven heeft een unieke verbinding met het centrum van Amsterdam door de nabijheid van twee aanmeerpunten van gratis ponten naar het Centraal Station Amsterdam, beiden op ongeveer 5 minuten lopen. Right now, I’m on a mission to rebuild a 111-year old (as of 2021) English sailing yacht called Tally Ho. Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel – but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her. I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now starting to rebuild her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK. A vessel must comply with the regulations of its flag state wherever it is in the world. In addition when cruising the waters of another country (as explained on the page Law of the Sea and the Coastal State), that country can require you to comply with its national legislation (as applicable to foreign flagged vessels). The UK's relationship with the EU changed from 1 January 2021. As a result you now have an obligation to report to UK Border Force when moving into and out of the UK by recreational boat. You should expect greater scrutiny and requirements to report on arrival and departure, when moving between the UK and the EU and/or the Schengen area by recreational boat. For each of the countries listed, answers to questions that regularly come up are provided. The information applies to UK registered boats owned by private individuals who are resident in the UK, which are taken abroad by them on a short visit. If you choose to base your boat abroad, have both property and your boat in a country, become resident abroad, cruise a company-owned yacht or use your vessel commercially (including offering it for charter), the rules may differ considerably from those applicable to private vessels on short visits. Specialist advice should be sought from the authorities (or a lawyer) in the country concerned.

Spirit-Of-Tradition Registry: Swede 55 -- A Knud Reimers Design

Surprisingly undocumented for a design this important — most searches for the “Vortex 55” lead to a hand mixer — these Knud Reimers boats were among the first group to sound the starting gun for the modern Spirit-of-Tradition narrative. Drawn in 1975, the Swede 55 was all about Reimers adapting a square-meter rule, popular for that time, to a mass-produced, fiberglass 53-foot day-sailer. Something like 35 were built between about 1975 and 1985, with names like Tiana, and Rosina. What matters today is, if you look carefully at the original design to the right, is how Reimers lays out most of the arguments of the Spirit-of-Tradition continuum: A traditional looking overhanging bow and stern, a slender hull matched to a modern keel and spade rudder — all with the most current rig and sails of the time. But what makes the design indispensable is how, back in the late 1980s Steve White, owner of Maine’s Brooklin Boat Yard, decided the Swede 55 would speak to his interests more if built out of composite wood construction. White had Reimers make a few tweaks for the build; and after a reported 7,000 man-hours of production (whoa!), a cold-molded wood layup of this modern-classic splashed into Maine’s Jericho Bay in 1990, christened as Vortex. We’ll save the ugly nitty-gritty of finessing the Spirit-of-Tradition principles into the constrained square-meter rule at the heart of this boat for another day. But still, we’ve sailed Vortex a lot. We’re in a few of these photos and videos, if you look carefully. And we can honestly report, of all the Spirit-of-Tradition boats we’ve sailed and designed, the Swede 55 is as pure a modern-classic as any vessel afloat. The Swede 55 may be from another era. But she still matters today.

The Swede 55 was conceived in 1975 by naval architect Knud Reimers of Denmark. He is best known for his design of square meter class yachts and the Udell International. The Swede 55 was a stock design and to this day remains a very popular boat. The Swede 55 was built by Fiskastra Varb shipyard. Upon request of some of Stockholms KSSS members, Reimers designed the Swede 55 as a cruising ocean racing square meter yacht. The Swede 55’s design has an elevated freeboard, a comfortable center-cockpit, a nominal sail area of 55 square meters and additional volume below deck. She was inspired by Rolly Taskers “Siska”, a Knud Reimers 40 square meter boat modified for the Sydney-Hobart Race. The Swede 55 is a nimble, fast and exceptional performing sailing yacht; capable of handling rough seas and keeping her crew safe and comfortable. The boat was built to very high standards as an easily managed yacht. Whether cruising, racing or offshore pursuits, the Swede 55 is powered by a modest sail plan, easily managed by a shorthanded crew, yet offers a full cruising interior with practical accommodations. During this owners ownership, numerous upgrades have been made to her sail inventory, canvas, electronics, wiring, and overall appearance.

This site was created primarily for the prospective or newly established boat builder but has proven to be useful to boat owners. It is intended to be a reference for the beginning boat builder who has decided to build boats and sell them. It does not tell you how to build boats, although it has many links to such sites on Ike's List. It does tell you what things you need to know if you are building or planning to build boats and sell them. This is not just for wood boats, or fiberglass boats, but for all boats. The rules, regulations and standards here apply to all recreational boats. They apply primarily to small craft under 60 feet but that is not a hard and fast rule. For instance, all recreational boats are required to have a Hull Identification Number regardless of size. Another instance is gasoline fuel systems. The rules apply to all recreational boats with permanently installed gasoline engines. I will state at the beginning of each subject what it applies to because Federal Regulations define what vessels each regulation applies to and ABYC standards do so as well.

A friendly but professional, family run business with an old fashioned approach to sales & customer service, situated on the waterfront of the delightful market town and boating centre of Woodbridge in Suffolk. Andy arrived in Woodbridge from the Midlands in the early 70’s to join his parents who had moved there some years before. Boating had always been the family hobby and he soon realised that whilst you could order your yacht from one of the local yards, there was nowhere to buy a dinghy to hang on the davits! He soon set about "plugging the gap" and acquired a premises on the Quayside and began buying and selling tenders, small fishing boats, sailing dinghies & day boats. His intention was to bring boating to "everyman" and his early adverts boasted that he could "get you sailing or motoring down the river for less than £500". Several thousand boat sales later it seems he was right! The business went from strength to strength and the range and size of boats he offered grew dramatically and now he has over 70 boats on display at any time, from dinghies to ocean going yachts – canoes to 40’ cruisers.

A UK flagged vessel must wear her ensign as required by the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, which includes when entering or leaving a foreign port and on demand. It is recommended that the ensign is worn at all times in daylight, especially when near to or in sight of land or another vessel. The Coastal State may also have legislation which mandates an ensign being worn at other times.
