This page demonstrate the FineDiff class (as in “fine granularity diff”) I wrote – starting from scratch – to generate a lossless (won't eat your line breaks), compact opcodes string listing the sequence of atomic actions (copy/delete/insert) necessary to transform one string into another (thereafter referred as the “From” and “To” string). The “To” string can be rebuilt by running the opcodes string on the “From” string. The FineDiff class allows to specify the granularity, and up to character-level granularity is possible, in order to generate the smallest diff possible (at the potential cost of increased CPU cycles.)

I tried using the comp command like it mentioned, but if I have two files, one with data like "abcd" and the other with data "abcde", it just says the files are of different sizes. I wanted to know where exactly they differ. In Unix, the simple diff tells me which row and column, the comp command in windows works if I have something like "abd" and "abc". Not otherwise. Any ideas what I can use for this?

Meld is a visual diff and merge tool targeted at developers. Meld helps you compare files, directories, and version controlled projects. It provides two- and three-way comparison of both files and directories, and has support for many popular version control systems. Meld helps you review code changes and understand patches. It might even help you to figure out what is going on in that merge you keep avoiding.

This covers setting up a SSH access controlled Git server from scratch. It’s assuming there is no other repository to import from. It is loosely based on the instructions from Chapter 4 of the Pro Git book. Installing Git is simple. You might also want to grab gitk for visualizing your commits and branches, and kdiff3 for merging changes.

Beyond Compare 3 is the ideal tool for comparing files and folders on your Windows or Linux system. Visualize changes in your code and carefully reconcile them. BC3 means 3-way merge. Merge your changes with someone else's using a common ancestor as a basis. Interfaces with popular version control systems. Folder synchronization just got a whole lot easier. Manage rollouts, update your website, backup your laptop. Copy only the data that's changed for quicker syncs.
