Philippe Dufour

http://watches-lexic.ch/pages/eng/tec/fs_dufour2.htm

Saved by uncleflo on June 5th, 2018.

Philippe Dufour says that people come to him because he creates watches that cannot be found elsewhere. "I'm obliged to innovate" he says pragmatically. But do not feel sorry for him. The challenge to create the world's first double escapement wristwatch was seized gladly. The aim of the double escapement is to compensate for errors in the rate of the watch, produced by the effect of gravity on the regulating organs. In this sense, it challenges the existing champion, the tourbillon device, invented by Breguet in 1801. Philippe Dufour's double escapement has proved already to be effective. Compared with the tourbillon, it possesses the additional quality of retaining all its efficiency when reduced to the dimensions of a wristwatch. The key to the concept is a complex differential system, positioned, with the two escapement mechanisms, on the fourth wheel. The two balance wheels operate completely independently of each other. The differential system averages out the differences between them, and thus reduces the potential error in rate by half. The differential system alone, without the regulating organs, has twenty-one parts, twice as many as the tourbillon. And yet the entire assembly is only 30 mm in diameter, and 4 mm high. It fits neatly into a 34 mm watch. How may the Duality be recognised? This master of complications says that, aesthetically speaking, he likes simplicity. For the Duality this means a smooth, finely polished case in yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or platinum. A silvered dial carries Dauphine-style hands pointing to raised hour markers and Arabic numerals. A distinctive feature of the dial is the unusual placing of the small seconds-hand at half-past seven, reflecting the layout of the movement. The strap is in top quality, hand stitched crocodile leather.

Seiko Watches > Thermic

https://museum.seiko.co.jp/en/collections/clock_watch/category3/collect041.html

Saved by uncleflo on May 31st, 2018.

The world’s first watch equipped with a mechanism for thermal power generation. The thermal power elements generate electricity from the temperature difference between the body and atmosphere and store it as energy in a secondary battery. A full charge keeps the watch running for about 10 months. The Thermic generates electric power via the Seebeck effect, a phenomenon produced when heat transfers from the back of the case to the case surface. To improve energy efficiency further, a power-saving mechanism stops the second hand whenever the watch is removed from the wrist.

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/explore/is-a-tomato-a-fruit-or-a-vegetable/

Saved by uncleflo on May 6th, 2018.

The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits, such as tomatoes or bean pods, may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So, the answer to the question is that a tomato is technically the fruit of the tomato plant, but it's used as a vegetable in cooking.

Snell's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snell%27s_law#Vector_form

Saved by uncleflo on February 22nd, 2015.

Snell's law (also known as the Snell–Descartes law and the law of refraction) is a formula used to describe the relationship between the angles of incidence and refraction, when referring to light or other waves passing through a boundary between two different isotropic media, such as water, glass, or air. In optics, the law is used in ray tracing to compute the angles of incidence or refraction, and in experimental optics to find the refractive index of a material. The law is also satisfied in metamaterials, which allow light to be bent "backward" at a negative angle of refraction with a negative refractive index.

cmd - What is the Windows equivalent of the diff command? - Stack Overflow

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6877238/what-is-the-windows-equivalent-of-the-diff-command

Saved by uncleflo on June 3rd, 2014.

I tried using the comp command like it mentioned, but if I have two files, one with data like "abcd" and the other with data "abcde", it just says the files are of different sizes. I wanted to know where exactly they differ. In Unix, the simple diff tells me which row and column, the comp command in windows works if I have something like "abd" and "abc". Not otherwise. Any ideas what I can use for this?

It seems there is two concurrent solutions that cover this issue : gitosis & gitolite. I could not find any comparison between both solutions. What are the main differences between them? Are there other similar solution?

French and sarcasm - WordReference Forums

I was wondering how much sarcasm is used in French, compared to English, and under what conditions? Is there any characteristic aspect of French sarcasm (tone of voice, gesture, whatever) that would give a clue to an easily-confused Anglophone (such as myself) that a French speaker is being sarcastic, and so not to take him/her literally (which would be a huge mistake!)?

Saved by uncleflo on September 17th, 2011.

In Flex, an event object is created whenever an event is dispatched. The event object has two important properties – event.target and event.currentTarget. The event.target property references the event dispatcher while event.currentTarget property refers to the node which is currently being checked for event listeners. While event.target property stays the same throughout the event flow (capturing, targeting and bubbling phases), the event.currentTarget property changes on each node.

Sun, smoking, alcohol and stress can all add years to your face. By Joan Kron.
For years, the similarities between Jeanne and Susan were uncanny. Growing up, the identical twin sisters not only were mirror images of each other, but also shared a bunch of preferences and personality quirks. Even now, living 1,000 miles apart — Jeanne in Ohio, Susan in Florida — “we’ll send identical Christmas cards to our parents and choose the exact same gift wrap,” Jeanne says. But they do have some differences, she adds: “We don’t have the same taste in men or in weather.”
