Query Express is a simple Query Analyzer look-alike, but being small and free, it can be run where the SQL Server client tools are not installed or licensed. This makes it especially useful as a query tool for MSDE and SQL Express. It also connects, to Oracle and other OLE-DB compliant databases. Query Express requires no installation and is packaged as a single 100KB executable. This is more than 300 times smaller than SQL Server Management Studio! Query Express is ideal for those not yet ready for LINQPad.

Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) is right around the corner and requests have been pouring in from our loyal readers. One of those requests is how to install Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7 in Ubuntu 12.04. I have written about this topic on this blog previously, but not for Precise Pangolin. Multiple Service consumers invoke operations defined on a Service Provider. To do that they need a way to find out the Service Location of where the provider service is hosted, and the various interfaces, operations, and data types that are provided and suppoted by the Service Provider so that they can interact with the provider's services. The Web Services Desciption Language (WSDL) is an XML document that describes all the Service Provider contracts (also known as service descriptions) to which consumers of the service must agree to in order to interact with the Provider.

This issue's Ask Tom column is a little different from the typical column. I receive many questions about how to perform top- N and pagination queries in Oracle Database, so I decided to provide an excerpt from the book Effective Oracle by Design (Oracle Press, 2003) in hopes of answering a lot of these questions with this one column. Note that the content here has been modified from the original to fit the space and format.

Data Definition Language (DDL) statements are used to define the database structure or schema. Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements are used for managing data within schema objects. Data Control Language (DCL) statements. Transaction Control (TCL) statements are used to manage the changes made by DML statements. It allows statements to be grouped together into logical transactions.

At some point in your application, you might find that you need to store "large" data in your database. Large typically means "around 4kb or more", although some databases can happily handle up to 32kb before data becomes "large". Large objects can be either textual or binary in nature. PDO allows you to work with this large data type by using the PDO::PARAM_LOB type code in your PDOStatement::bindParam() or PDOStatement::bindColumn() calls. PDO::PARAM_LOB tells PDO to map the data as a stream, so that you can manipulate it using the PHP Streams API.
