A New Approach to 3D Printing a Yacht Hull Mold

http://blog.thermwood.com/en-us/a-new-approach-to-3d-printing-a-yacht-hull-mold

Saved by uncleflo on February 13th, 2022.

Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

Pozzani Pure Water Online Store

Pozzani Pure Water plc is one of the UKs largest and most established providers of plumbed in water filter systems and replacement cartridges. Over the past 20 years Pozzani have pioneered development in the growing market of plumbed in systems - these are systems which connect to your mains supply and filter water on demand, as opposed to a filter jug where it requires filling on each occasion. Pozzani have always believed that this method of water filtrations is most practical for most applications and suprisingly more cost effective, since cartridges last longer than smaller jug filters and the cost per litre produced is upto 200 times less than that of bottled water! Through a successful range of products in this sector, which have been continously developed into todays range we have developed a very good understanding of the UK market, and have a wide range of other products which are designed to meet these demands. These range from water coolers for domestic and office use, water softeners units to combat limescale, dechlorination systems and an expanding range of cartridges designed to fit both our own and other manufacturers products. We are a bright an innovative company, placing emphasis on providing the right product at the right price BUT without cutting corners in customer service or quality. We operate a full warehousing and assembly plant in Lincolnshire, and have full time telephone operators, technical support and despatch staff - ensuring all questions, enquiries and orders are processed both quickly and accurately.

SpaceSniffer - Visualizing Layout Disk Space

http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/download.html

Saved by uncleflo on December 20th, 2018.

SpaceSniffer is a freeWare (donations are welcome) and portable tool application that lets you understand how folders and files are structured on your disks. By using a Treemap visualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are placed on your devices. Treemap concept was invented by Prof. Ben Shneiderman, who kindly permitted the use of his concept into this tool. Start a scan process and see the overall situation. Bigger are the elements on the view, bigger are folders and files on your disk. You need more detail on a big folder? Just single click on it. The selected element will be detailed with its content. Need more and more detail? Keep selecting elements and they'll discover their secrets to you. Need a larger view of a small folder? Then double click on it, and it'll zoom to the full extent of the view. If you need to understand why no more free space is left on media, keep following bigger elements. Maybe you want to focus only on particular file types... ok. Just type the file type on the filter field (example: *.jpg) and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files.

How to Upgrade Your Network to 10 Gb/s and Speed Up Your Workflow

We've finally done it: Fstoppers has moved over to a new 10 Gb/second network and server and it is incredibly fast. Let me show you what we did and how you can create your own 10 Gb/s network for a fraction of the price. For the past four years we have been using a Synology NAS (network attached storage) device to work from and to backup all of our photo and video content. It has served us well but as we hire more people, and as we begin shooting videos in 4K, it has been filling up and slowing down. It was time for us to upgrade.

Data Warehousing Summary Tables

https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/data-warehousing-summary-tables/

Saved by uncleflo on June 27th, 2018.

This document discusses the creation and maintenance of "Summary Tables". It is a companion to the document on Data Warehousing Techniques. The basic terminology ("Fact Table", "Normalization", etc) is covered in that document. Summary tables are a performance necessity for large tables. MariaDB and MySQL do not provide any automated way to create such, so I am providing techniques here. (Other vendors provide something similar with "materialized views".) When you have millions or billions of rows, it takes a long time to summarize the data to present counts, totals, averages, etc, in a size that is readily digestible by humans. By computing and saving subtotals as the data comes in, one can make "reports" run much faster. (I have seen 10x to 1000x speedups.) The subtotals go into a "summary table". This document guides you on efficiency in both creating and using such tables.

I’ve had to search the occurrency of a string within some very large text files, as result of a “file carving” made with Autopsy. Usually on Windows I use Notepad ++, that provides a convenient feature of ‘Search in files’, but this great tool has difficulty to open files larger than 2Gb. However there are some other solutions on Windows.

Running Docker in Production: three use cases and the good, the bad and the ugly

http://blog.kontena.io/docker-in-production-good-bad-ugly/

Saved by uncleflo on December 27th, 2017.

At the first Docker Helsinki Meetup for 2017 on January 17th, we heard about three interesting use cases of the ins and outs of how Docker is used in production at Solita, Zalando and Pipedrive. We also heard about the good, the bad and the ugly of running Docker in production. Solita's Use Case: Firstly, Heikki Simperi from Solita explained how his company uses Docker to handle the various apps and systems associated with their management of the Finnish National Railway Service (VR), as well as the problems they've run into when using Docker. Solita runs a variety of their own apps on Docker, including a navigator for train drivers, a construction notification system and a traffic controller app. Heikki reiterated that it's important for the downtime to be minimal when the apps involved are ones responsible for railway management and that "anything over a 3-5 min downtime causes delays for trains, but nobody dies". Most of the issues they experienced using Docker were related to building an image, having a private repository, removing or starting up a container, or a bug inside an app. Overall, the running usage of the Docker platform has been stable, with "zero downtime". The problems have lessened after upgrading to each new Docker version and they are experiencing less and less problems as time goes on. They are looking forward to the release of Docker 1.12 on a stable channel from Red Hat.

The C10K problem

http://www.kegel.com/c10k.html

Saved by uncleflo on May 17th, 2013.

It's time for web servers to handle ten thousand clients simultaneously, don't you think? After all, the web is a big place now. And computers are big, too. You can buy a 1000MHz machine with 2 gigabytes of RAM and an 1000Mbit/sec Ethernet card for $1200 or so. Let's see - at 20000 clients, that's 50KHz, 100Kbytes, and 50Kbits/sec per client. It shouldn't take any more horsepower than that to take four kilobytes from the disk and send them to the network once a second for each of twenty thousand clients. (That works out to $0.08 per client, by the way. Those $100/client licensing fees some operating systems charge are starting to look a little heavy!) So hardware is no longer the bottleneck. In 1999 one of the busiest ftp sites, cdrom.com, actually handled 10000 clients simultaneously through a Gigabit Ethernet pipe. As of 2001, that same speed is now being offered by several ISPs, who expect it to become increasingly popular with large business customers.

PHP: Large Objects (LOBs) - Manual

http://php.net/manual/en/pdo.lobs.php

Saved by uncleflo on January 21st, 2013.

At some point in your application, you might find that you need to store "large" data in your database. Large typically means "around 4kb or more", although some databases can happily handle up to 32kb before data becomes "large". Large objects can be either textual or binary in nature. PDO allows you to work with this large data type by using the PDO::PARAM_LOB type code in your PDOStatement::bindParam() or PDOStatement::bindColumn() calls. PDO::PARAM_LOB tells PDO to map the data as a stream, so that you can manipulate it using the PHP Streams API.
