UTF-8 is an ASCII-preserving encoding method for Unicode (ISO 10646), the Universal Character Set (UCS). The UCS encodes most of the world's writing systems in a single character set, allowing you to mix languages and scripts within a document without needing any tricks for switching character sets. This web page is encoded directly in UTF-8. This, however, is a Web page, which started out as a kind of stress test for UTF-8 support in Web browsers, which was spotty when this page was first created in the 1990s but which has become standard in all modern browsers. The problem now is mainly the fonts and the browser's (or font's) support for the nonzero Unicode planes (as in, e.g., the Braille
and Gothic examples below). And to some extent the rendition of combining sequences, right-to-left rendition (Arabic,

There are many tools in the developer’s toolbox when it comes to automatic data extraction. A good example is TF-IDF algorithm (Term Frequency – Inverse Document Frequency) which helps the system understand the importance of keywords extracted using OCR. Here’s how TF-IDF can be used for invoice and receipt recognition. In this article we focus on other techniques in order to make this text file “understandable” to a computer. For this purpose, we must delve into the world of NLP or Natural Language Processing. We will focus mainly on how we can transform our file of raw text into a format that will easily be understandable by our algorithm. In a nutshell, TF-IDF is a technique for understanding how important a word is in a document which is often used as a weighting factor for numerous use cases. TF-IDF takes under consideration how frequent a word appears in a single document in relation to how frequent that word is in general. Search engines can use TF-IDF to determine which results are the most relevant for a search query.

In the previous chapter, we explored in depth what we mean by the tidy text format and showed how this format can be used to approach questions about word frequency. This allowed us to analyze which words are used most frequently in documents and to compare documents, but now let’s investigate a different topic. Let’s address the topic of opinion mining or sentiment analysis. When human readers approach a text, we use our understanding of the emotional intent of words to infer whether a section of text is positive or negative, or perhaps characterized by some other more nuanced emotion like surprise or disgust. We can use the tools of text mining to approach the emotional content of text programmatically, as shown in Figure 2.1.

This tool provides an efficient implementation of the continuous bag-of-words and skip-gram architectures for computing vector representations of words. These representations can be subsequently used in many natural language processing applications and for further research. The word2vec tool takes a text corpus as input and produces the word vectors as output. It first constructs a vocabulary from the training text data and then learns vector representation of words. The resulting word vector file can be used as features in many natural language processing and machine learning applications. A simple way to investigate the learned representations is to find the closest words for a user-specified word. The distance tool serves that purpose. For example, if you enter 'france', distance will display the most similar words and their distances to 'france', which should look like:

Usually, programs are written and documented in English, and use English at execution time to interact with users. This is true not only of GNU software, but also of a great deal of proprietary and free software. Using a common language is quite handy for communication between developers, maintainers and users from all countries. On the other hand, most people are less comfortable with English than with their own native language, and would prefer to use their mother tongue for day to day’s work, as far as possible. Many would simply love to see their computer screen showing a lot less of English, and far more of their own language. However, to many people, this dream might appear so far fetched that they may believe it is not even worth spending time thinking about it. They have no confidence at all that the dream might ever become true. Yet some have not lost hope, and have organized themselves. The Translation Project is a formalization of this hope into a workable structure, which has a good chance to get all of us nearer the achievement of a truly multi-lingual set of programs. When we talk about bias, we often tie it to acts of discrimination or prejudice. But according to cognitive science, everybody, by virtue of having a brain that’s constantly seeking efficiency, is biased in some way — and not all biases make us actively malicious. The key is how we manage our biases. While biases can affect any of an organization’s talent decisions, they can be especially harmful when it comes to diversity and inclusion efforts. And there is perhaps no setting that shapes careers, salaries, and lives like annual performance evaluations. In a recent performance management summit we ran with over 100 large organizations, 57% of them said they weren’t taking any actions to address bias in performance reviews. One reason why may be a lack of shared language: In order to address biases, you first have to be able to label them. Research has found that several biases come up again and again when managers are evaluating a team member.

JavaScript is a very flexible object-oriented language when it comes to syntax. In this article you can find three ways of defining and instantiating an object. Even if you have already picked your favorite way of doing it, it helps to know some alternatives in order to read other people's code. It's important to note that there are no classes in JavaScript. Functions can be used to somewhat simulate classes, but in general JavaScript is a class-less language. Everything is an object. And when it comes to inheritance, objects inherit from objects, not classes from classes as in the "class"-ical languages.

The OSGi Alliance, formerly known as the Open Services Gateway initiative, is an open standards organization founded in March 1999 that originally specified and continues to maintain the OSGi standard. The OSGi specification describes a modular system and a service platform for the Java programming language that implements a complete and dynamic component model, something that does not exist in standalone Java/VM environments. Applications or components, coming in the form of bundles for deployment, can be remotely installed, started, stopped, updated, and uninstalled without requiring a reboot; management of Java packages/classes is specified in great detail. Application life cycle management is implemented via APIs that allow for remote downloading of management policies. The service registry allows bundles to detect the addition of new services, or the removal of services, and adapt accordingly.

JavaScript is quickly becoming the go-to language for web developers. Front-end web developers use JavaScript to add user interface enhancements, add interactivity, and talk to back-end web services using AJAX. Web developers who work on the server-side are also flocking to JavaScript because of the efficiencies and speed offered by JavaScript’s event-driven, non-blocking nature. In fact, concentrating on JavaScript as your language of choice offers the opportunity to master a single language while still being able to develop “full-stack” web applications. The key to this server-side JavaScript revolution is Node.js® — a version of Chrome’s V8 JavaScript runtime engine — which makes it possible to run JavaScript on the server-side. Node.js is also used for developing desktop applications and for deploying tools that make developing web sites simpler. For example, by installing Node.js® on your desktop machine, you can quickly convert CoffeeScript to JavaScript, SASS to CSS, and shrink the size of your HTML, JavaScript and graphic files. Using NPM — a tool that makes installing and managing Node modules — it’s quite easy to add many useful tools to your web development toolkit. n the halcyon days of early 2005, a project was launched to bring long overdue native Unicode and internationalization support to PHP. It was deemed so far reaching and important that PHP needed to have a version bump. After more than 4 years of development, the project (and PHP 6 for now) was shelved. This talk will introduce Unicode and i18n concepts, explain why Web needs Unicode, why PHP needs Unicode, how we tried to solve it (with examples), and what eventually happened. No sordid details will be left uncovered.

Welcome to the SVGBasics tutorials. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a standard from the W3C which is built on top of XML. The SVG standard describes ways that graphics can be drawn for use on the web. I've assembled here some examples that you can freely modify and reuse. The idea is to cover the basics with numerous examples that people can experiment with to get an idea of what SVG can do. The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) recommendation comes from the W3C. The recommendation describes how to create vector graphics using a mark up language. Because SVG is based on XML, tools that already know how to interpret XML will be able to interpret SVG. Having this well-established standard as a foundation saves a lot of the work in defining the language. It also means that there are numerous tools around which can check the structure of an SVG document or read it to pull out interesting information.
