A skipper does much more than navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage.

You will be living on board a sailing yacht during the course. A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and ensure your safety. Experience being in charge, taking credit when it all goes well and being responsible when it doesn't. This course will also qualify you for an ICC certificate. The minimum requirement to charter a boat, we will cover pontoon and med moorings. Although there is no requirement to have undertaken any previous RYA courses there is a pre-course prerequisite for Day skipper practical.

Sunsail’s RYA Day Skipper practical course enables students to gain the experience and qualifications necessary to set sail with confidence on one of Sunsail’s yacht charter or flotilla holidays, in some of the most breathtaking sailing destinations in the world. This is a practical course for sailors with significant previous sailing experience (a minimum of five days sailing and living on board, 100 miles logged and four hours night sailing is required) and a comprehensive understanding of the theory behind the practice. Skippering a yacht for the first time will be a most memorable experience. The Day Skipper practical course is designed to teach you how to safely and confidently "Take Charge" of the yacht. A skipper’s task is not only to navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and it’s crew. Weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage are all included in these responsibilities. You will also be called upon to direct meals and delegate housekeeping duties on board. These skills will be taught and put into practice whilst acting as skipper on short passages. For the duration of the course you will live aboard the yacht and visit many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages to practice pilotage techniques and the essential skills of boat handling.
