The London Houseboat is a unique place to stay when visiting London. The boat sits on one of the best moorings within Limehouse Marina, just down the River Thames from Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. The boat, custom-built in Liverpool in 2023, is designed with every comfort in mind, including two double bedrooms, a luxuriously equipped bathroom with freestanding bath and rainforest shower, a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, and an open plan living area with a smart TV and super fast broadband. There are radiators throughout the boat making it a warm and comfortable home all year round. You enter the boat at the stern where there is a wooden semi-circular dining table which comfortably seats six people, with beautiful views out across the whole marina. Hanging overhead is an infra-red lamp, providing evening light and heating for those cooler days and nights, making this canvas covered area useable throughout the year.

A well-designed sailing yacht is a thing of pure beauty, here are just 10 of the world’s finest… in my eyes at least! Velsheda
When she was launched in 1933, the J-Class yacht Velsheda represented the cutting edge of technology and sophistication and won races against all the great yachts of her day. However, she only was only used for three seasons and after World War 2 it looked as though none of these great yachts would ever sail again. King George V’s Britannia had already been scuttled south of the Isle of Wight, and Velsheda became a houseboat, firmly embedded into the River Hamble Mud for almost 50 years. In the 1970s she was saved from being cut up for scrap after being bought by a group of enthusiasts led by Bembridge bank manager Royce Pook. She then became the first of the class to be restored – in near original specification – thanks to Yorkshire scrap metal merchant Terry Brabant who bought her in 1984. Further refits after Brabant’s ownership saw her refurbished into the spectacular luxury yacht we see today.

Living on a houseboat in London: living on the water is no longer an alternative lifestyle choice as Londoners look to rivers and canals for better value homes. Londoners looking for a central home on a budget are hitting the water — and avoiding stamp duty in the process. The number of Londoners resorting to living on boats has rocketed — with many driven off dry land by the high price of conventional homes. The number of boats registered to be moored on London waterways has increased by nearly 60 per cent in the past five years to almost 4,000, according to latest figures from the Canal & River Trust, which manages 100 miles of canals in the capital including the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals. Many other floating households are in private marinas or at moorings along the Thames.

London vies with Hong Kong and Monaco for the unenviable title of the world's most expensive city for housing. The average house price in the English capital is now nearly £600,000 ($787,000), and a study from the charity Shelter found just 43 properties affordable to people on an average income. Several of these properties were houseboats. Life on London's 100-mile network of canals, or 42-mile stretch of the River Thames, has become a popular option for beleaguered citizens, and such homes can cost as little as £20,000 ($26,500). But as more people swap apartments for houseboats, the popular, romantic vision is giving way to a harsh reality.
