Boat pontoons from Top Marine - durable products for many years

https://tmmarinas.com/floating-pontoons/boat-pontoons/

Saved by uncleflo on January 17th, 2022.

In 20 years, we have become the leading provider of complete floating pontoon solutions in the Baltics and in the Nordic countries. Boat pontoons with plastic floats are intended for use in marinas on inland waterways. Vessels can be moored comfortably with boat booms, buoys or straight from the boat. Using standard modules, you can create a boat pontoon with a suitable length, shape and load capacity (see the examples below), and you can successfully use the floats under a floating sauna or a floating platform. An existing pontoon can be extended later in length and width. The boat pontoon can be positioned horizontally or longitudinally with the bank, and anchored with concrete anchors, mooring chains, mooring piles or mooring diagonals.

All-Concrete Pontoons - Marinetek

https://marinetek.net/products/pontoons/all-concrete/

Saved by uncleflo on January 17th, 2022.

For boat mooring and general purpose use Marinetek All-Concrete represent the latest know-how in pontoon technology and are the most widely used structural concrete pontoon models, favoured for private use as well as for the biggest marinas. Designed for boat mooring in modern marinas and landing stages, fully and heavily reinforced pontoon units are seaworthy, very strong and maintenance-free with a high loading capacity and very long service life. The pontoons are connected by flexible rubber bolt joints, cornerwise and sideways if required, and can create the strongest mooring points for large marinas. The models optimise use of materials to generate an economical but very durable pontoon for any marina. Modules are available in a range of standard sizes 2,4-4,3 m wide and weighing 8-20 ton. The series is offered with a range of optional accessories that can be incorporated to customise each system. Options include different kinds of decking and cable ducts to carry water, power, grey water and fire mains; and two different fixing systems incorporating universal adjustments for fingers.

Canvey Area - Thames and Estuary: pilotage, charts, photos and marine business listings

https://www.visitmyharbour.com/harbours/thames-estuary/canvey-area/expanded.asp

Saved by uncleflo on January 16th, 2022.

The area described stretches from Southend Pier to Hole Haven Creek, and is home to a couple of thousand shoal draft yachts and other shallow craft. These are either moored off the foreshore or tucked up in the muddy little creeks. One thing they all have in common is that they take the ground when the tide leaves (except perhaps for a few fishing boats moored at Holehaven and in Ray Gut). In general the area is not suitable for deeper draft fin keelers, except for a couple of temporary anchorages, a long way from any facilities. The town of Southend is fronted by extensive drying mud flats that reach almost to the end of the pier. A deepwater gutway runs inwards towards Leigh on Sea and branches off a short way to Smallgains Creek, which houses a boatyard with mud berth moorings at the eastern extremity of Canvey Island. Another arm continues past Two Tree Island where many small craft are moored in semi shelter and then winds and twists it's way up Benfleet Creek, where there are two yacht clubs with extensive drying moorings and a boatyard, (that nestle in total shelter no matter what the wind is doing).

Types of rope

https://www.classicmarine.co.uk/articles/reference-data/45-materials/142-types-of-rope

Saved by uncleflo on January 2nd, 2020.

Rope makers seem to delight in confusing us with science and/or extraordinary polysyllabic names. Let me try to cut through the guff a little. Also known as Terylene or Dacron, polyester is the stuff from which most “ordinary” rope and line is made of. It is resistant to rot and ultra-violet (UV), sinks in water and comes in a variety of constructions: 3-strand pre-stretched - can be spliced in the normal fashion, though it is a good idea to use 4 or 5 tucks instead of the 3 used in natural fibre ropes. The “pre-stretch” refers to an extra tweak imparted during the making of the rope which makes it more suitable for halyards and bell ropes. Very important, that - could you imagine the cacophony which would result from using stretchy rope? The snag with this construction is that it can kink, so it’s unusual to use it as a sheet.

International Flotilla Skipper | IYT Worldwide

https://www.iytworld.com/courses/international-flotilla-skipper/

Saved by uncleflo on December 22nd, 2019.

Joining a “flotilla” is a fun and exciting way to learn how to confidently skipper a charter yacht for the very first time. A group of boats sail together (flotilla) along a set route, with a “lead boat”  in charge, overseeing the safety of all the boats where all the boats are within range of a VHF radio call if required. Before departing in the morning, a route is planned for the day with a set destination for the evenings so that all the boats can anchor or tie up to a mooring buoy (before dark) for the night. Generally speaking, flotillas are restricted to passages close to shore, in fair weather and in good visibility.  They are usually followed in the evenings by a beach bar-b-que or dinner together in a social atmosphere where students can swap stories and learn from each other. It is a great way to make new friends and build your confidence, while still enjoying the freedom of being in command of your own vessel with your family and friends.

Lot's Ait - Boatyard on the Thames

http://www.lotsait.com/

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

Lots Ait Boatyard is situated on an island in the river Thames between Kew Gardens and Brentford. An important part of London's commercial boating history, it was one of the last tidal boatyards to be closed in the early 1970's. Thanks partly to its island location, Lots Ait avoided re-development and has remained very much as it was left over 30 years ago with weeds and undergrowth hiding the vintage boat sheds and machinery that were formerly a hive of activity. John Watson, owner of John's Boat Works Ltd says "I have a lifelong passion for traditional boatbuilding and our great boating heritage, so having the opportunity to be involved in reopening Lots Ait boatyard is a dream come true. The revitalised boatyard will provide a fantastic boatbuilding and repair resource on the Thames for boat owners and enthusiasts and will also provide an opportunity for a new generation of craftsmen and women to experience and acquire traditional and modern boatbuilding and restoration skills."

Living on a houseboat in London

Living on a houseboat in London: living on the water is no longer an alternative lifestyle choice as Londoners look to rivers and canals for better value homes. Londoners looking for a central home on a budget are hitting the water — and avoiding stamp duty in the process. The number of Londoners resorting to living on boats has rocketed — with many driven off dry land by the high price of conventional homes. The number of boats registered to be moored on London waterways has increased by nearly 60 per cent in the past five years to almost 4,000, according to latest figures from the Canal & River Trust, which manages 100 miles of canals in the capital including the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals. Many other floating households are in private marinas or at moorings along the Thames.

Boat Sales UK - Running Costs

http://www.boatsales-uk.com/running_costs.htm

Saved by uncleflo on November 29th, 2018.

What does owning a canal boat cost? Every owner is different, they cruise for longer or shorter periods, moor in different areas of the country under many different conditions, some in purpose built marinas others alongside a farmers field with no facilities. The actual cost will therefore vary with the circumstances; however, the following will give a guide to the new boater. The example given is for a 55ft boat, originally built to provide a reasonably high standard of comfort including a diesel generator. It has a reasonably high usage of about 100 days per year and is maintained to a reasonably high standard without being excessive.
