Qiskit [kiss-kit] is an open-source SDK for working with quantum computers at the level of pulses, circuits, and application modules. When you are looking to start Qiskit, you have two options. You can start Qiskit locally, which is much more secure and private, or you get started with Jupyter Notebooks hosted in IBM Quantum Lab. Qiskit includes a comprehensive set of quantum gates and a variety of pre-built circuits so users at all levels can use Qiskit for research and application development. The transpiler translates Qiskit code into an optimized circuit using a backend’s native gate set, allowing users to program for any quantum processor or processor architecture with minimal inputs.

Was könnt ihr damit tun?

Living on a houseboat in London: living on the water is no longer an alternative lifestyle choice as Londoners look to rivers and canals for better value homes. Londoners looking for a central home on a budget are hitting the water — and avoiding stamp duty in the process. The number of Londoners resorting to living on boats has rocketed — with many driven off dry land by the high price of conventional homes. The number of boats registered to be moored on London waterways has increased by nearly 60 per cent in the past five years to almost 4,000, according to latest figures from the Canal & River Trust, which manages 100 miles of canals in the capital including the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals. Many other floating households are in private marinas or at moorings along the Thames.

In this post I present the development model that I’ve introduced for some of my projects (both at work and private) about a year ago, and which has turned out to be very successful. I’ve been meaning to write about it for a while now, but I’ve never really found the time to do so thoroughly, until now. I won’t talk about any of the projects’ details, merely about the branching strategy and release management.

Here's the software that helps Edward Snowden avoid the NSA, Edward Snowden hasn't escaped the NSA's watchful eyes purely by exploiting lax security -- he also uses the right software. He communicates with the media using Tails, a customized version of Linux that makes it easy to use Tor's anonymity network and other tools that keep data private. The software loads from external drives and doesn't store anything locally, so it's relatively trivial for Snowden and his contacts to discuss leaks without leaving a trace. The underlying technology isn't completely original, and it's not perfect; Tails' open source code and anonymous developer base help resist pressure to include spy-friendly back doors, but there are still potential security holes. Users also have to be careful with their choices of internet services while using Tails, as the wrong ones could give the whole game away. Even with those concerns in mind, the software is a big help to Snowden.

OpenPGP is the most widely used email encryption standard in the world. It is defined by the OpenPGP Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Proposed Standard RFC 4880. The OpenPGP standard was originally derived from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), first created by Phil Zimmermann in 1991. The OpenPGP Alliance is a growing group of companies and other organizations that are implementers of the OpenPGP Proposed Standard. The Alliance works to facilitate technical interoperability and marketing synergy between OpenPGP implementations.

OpenSSH (or Secure SHell) has become a de facto standard for remote access replacing the telnet protocol. SSH has made protocols such as telnet redundant due, in most part, to the fact that the connection is encrypted and passwords are no longer sent in plain text for all to see. However, a default installation of ssh isn't perfect, and when running an ssh server there are a few simple steps that can dramatically harden an installation.

A holding company is a special type of business that doesn’t do anything itself. Instead, it owns investments, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, gold, silver, real estate, art, patents, copyrights, licenses, private businesses, or virtually anything of value. The term holding company comes from the fact that the business has one job: to “hold” their investments.

Before we get into setting up Linux networking on a Debian system, we'll cover the basics of how to set up a network with both Windows and Linux systems and how to make it a "private" network. Here the term "private" may not mean what you think it does. It has to do with the IP addresses you use on your home or business network. You'll then understand the value of having a broadband router (for home networks), proxy/NAT server, or a firewall system which also performs the proxy/NAT function on your network.

This is a small follow up to my previous post on Setting up a KVM-LVM based virtual machine host, so if you haven't set up a KVM virtual machine host yet, you may want to read that post first. In the previous post I've described how to set up a very simple virtualised environment based on KVM. I also mentioned that I usually do part of the administration with the bundled GUI, virt-manager, and that I use command line tools for those administration tasks that aren't available in the GUI; in this post I'll mention some of the ones I happen to need most often.

Before you edit any files, you'll need to obtain some information. Log into the Linode Manager and click the "Remote Access" tab. You'll find your IP addresses (both public and private, if you have a private IP assigned), gateways, netmasks and DNS resolvers. Keep this information handy, because you'll need to refer to it as you configure your Linode's network settings. Since Linodes only have one virtual ethernet interface (eth0), you'll need to assign additional IPs to aliases on that interface. This means you'll append a colon and a number to the interface name. For these examples, the aliases are numbered in the order they were given, but most outbound connections will originate from the IP assigned to the eth0 interface. If you need server daemons to bind to a particular IP address, you'll need to specify the correct IP in their configuration files.

One of the things I’m attempting to achieve this year is simplifying my life somewhat. Given how much of my life revolves around technology, a large part of this will be consolidating the various services I consume (and often pay for). The mention of payment is important, as up until now I’ve been paying the awesome GitHub for their basic plan. I don’t have many private repositories with them, and all of them are strictly private code (this blog; Amanda’s blog templates and styles; and some other bits) which don’t require collaborators. For this reason, paying money to GitHub (awesome though they may be) seemed wasteful. So I decided to move all my private repositories to my own server. This is how I did it.
