The United States Flag Code provides advisory rules for display and care of the American Flag, but there are also specific guidelines for flying flags on recreational boats. In fact, boat flag etiquette not only ensures that the flag is displayed respectfully, it actually helps boaters to identify one another and communicate while on open water. The five most common types of boat flags are Ensign, Burgee, Private Signal, Courtesy and Signal Flags.

The InterProtect® products were introduced in 1985 for the repair and prevention of gelcoat blisters and quickly became the product of choice for professionals and do-it yourselfers alike. In the ensuing years it has become the standard by which everything else is measured. A study undertaken in 2001 reported that boats with InterProtect System on the bottom had a higher resale value than boats that did not. InterProtect has proven itself to be a universal primer. Below the waterline it can be used for corrosion protection on all underwater metals for hulls, keels, trim tabs and running gear as well as for blister protection and as part of the Ultimate No Sand System for new fiberglass boats. Above the waterline InterProtect is used on fiberglass and all metals. The InterProtect System was designed to repair hulls which have experienced gelcoat blistering. However, the best time to attack hull blistering is before it happens. Taking preventative action before a problem occurs greatly reduces the likelihood of an expensive repair and has been shown to increase resale value of your boat. If you’re buying a new boat, protect your investment with the InterProtect System before it ever goes into the water.

I don't sail but this idea interests me. Why couldn't a turbine of some description be fitted to the underside or even integrated into the keel to add to energy produced That is called an hydrogenerator and many oceanic sailboats use them. On the Vendee Globe, the non stop sailing race around the world most boats have two. They are expensive, with a price around 4/5000 euros. Finally somebody is working actively in what seems to be an obvious way to generate electric electricity on sailboats: Photo-voltaic sails. Till now the technology did not allow for panels flexible enough to allow that but on last years the technology has evolved a lot. It is already possible and it will not be expensive in the future. At least a sail manufacturer is working already actively on that, the UKsails France branch.

Plotting world circumnavigation routes is a lot easier than it sounds. There are cruising boats LITERALLY all over the world. There are boats in the Northwest passage (up and over Canada), in the Antarctic, and everywhere in between. There are a few key things to take into consideration, but 95%* of circumnavigation routes follow the same general course. There are two major restrictions put on us by our vessel insurance; stay out of highly pirated areas and stay out of named storm zones. Insurance restrictions come with the option to ignore them. You can always go to these restricted places, BUT if something happens, your insurance will not be covered. Another option is that you can pay significantly more to be covered in these places as well. We have made the choice for ourselves to follow the restrictions set by our insurance. By definition, piracy is the act of attacking and robbing ships at sea. By that main definition, the Caribbean is one of the worst places for piracy. Petty theft of boats and their tenders is a major issue in some parts of the Caribbean, and steps should be taken to protect yourself and your assets.

The Swede 55 was conceived in 1975 by naval architect Knud Reimers of Denmark. He is best known for his design of square meter class yachts and the Udell International. The Swede 55 was a stock design and to this day remains a very popular boat. The Swede 55 was built by Fiskastra Varb shipyard. Upon request of some of Stockholms KSSS members, Reimers designed the Swede 55 as a cruising ocean racing square meter yacht. The Swede 55’s design has an elevated freeboard, a comfortable center-cockpit, a nominal sail area of 55 square meters and additional volume below deck. She was inspired by Rolly Taskers “Siska”, a Knud Reimers 40 square meter boat modified for the Sydney-Hobart Race. The Swede 55 is a nimble, fast and exceptional performing sailing yacht; capable of handling rough seas and keeping her crew safe and comfortable. The boat was built to very high standards as an easily managed yacht. Whether cruising, racing or offshore pursuits, the Swede 55 is powered by a modest sail plan, easily managed by a shorthanded crew, yet offers a full cruising interior with practical accommodations. During this owners ownership, numerous upgrades have been made to her sail inventory, canvas, electronics, wiring, and overall appearance.

Singer and performer, lyricist and author, producer and filmmaker, or, as noted by producer BK-One in his liner notes to her ‘Best Of’ album ’Cibola Gold’, fearless… French-born American chanteuse Marianne Dissard is probably best known for the music she recorded in Tucson over her two decades of life in her Arizona hometown. She has toured her desert noir baroque Sonoran border pop worldwide from China to New Zealand, Europe to North America. A charismatic performer, her critically-acclaimed American chanson plays effortlessly with contradictions: ‘tender, yet abrasive; melodramatic, but vulnerable; comical and heartbreaking’. Equally so her first book, 'Not Me', an impish and poetic memoir and exploration of trauma and the life of a disordered touring musician, praised by some of Dissard's favorite authors; Mitch Cullin ('Tideland'), Chris Rush (‘The Light Years’), and Andrew Smith ('Moondust').

Given the wide range of potential issues with lightning protection of ships, it is not surprising that a common problem is that the agent does not understand how to define the most pressing concern. Ill defined Class regulations, use of ambiguous terms such as "lightning arrestor", and the widespread availability of devices with checkered histories do not help. To this end we offer a standard 20-hour consulting package that provides basic concepts, identifies prioritized issues, and develops the framework for an effective lightning protective process. Please email us with questions or details. Another fundamental problem revealed in this scientific work was that a one square foot ground plate is "hopelessly inadequate" to prevent sideflashes in fresh water. This was not addressed in these earlier standard rewrites since, at the time, there was no obvious solution. We can now solve this problem with our patented SiedarcTM electrodes that, when distributed around the hull, provide the multiple exit points needed for effective grounding.

The JetTENDER: Idea is to make really light and practical jet tender boat. Why? Because, strangely?, there is no such product on the market. All available Jet tenders are simply to big, to heavy - more than 290 kg, unpractical and expensive. Our goal is to make Jet tender which will be possible to handle on smaller yachts and sailboards which do not have lifting equipment, where storage have limited space or transom platform is not suitable for big and heavy boats. We believe that there is no need for strong engine. Big engine is heavy, uneconomical, require to much space and in fact you can not exploit all power. Thanks to small engine and joystick steering we could remove bulky steering console. Our concept have more inside space for passengers and cargo than much bigger boats. We managed to incorporate two covered storages and one on aft side is very big. Slim line design without any element which protrude allow that our JetTENDER can be placed in front of sailboat mast or in tight storage.

In the first edition of the Art and Science of Sails, written by Tom Whidden, president of North Sails Group, LLC, and Michael Levitt, and published by St. Martin’s Press, the authors used Arvel Gentry’s now famous Bathtub Experiment to demonstrate the existence of Circulation, or a second force, that operates around an airfoil, like a sail, wing, or keel etc. Big picture: it’s the combined effort of these two forces that makes the wind speed up on the leeward side — and thus show low pressure — and slow down on the windward side of a sail — high pressure. Gentry was the Boeing engineer who first taught sailors aerodynamics. These diagrams first appeared in Gentry’s Sail magazine articles. In the Revised Edition, the authors used computer testing to show where the wind speeds up around a sail plan and where it slows down. And why and by how much? Nevertheless, Gentry’s experiment is the standard — still popular on the web — and it was left it out of the Revised Edition with trepidation, but we linked in the book to this web page.

The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17 m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970 and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At that time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fibreglass. Sixteen were built, in both yawl and sloop versions. “The new Swan 120 Superyacht encompasses Nautor´s philosophy and DNA on its largest expression. Her sailing performance is exhilarating, thanks to the modern canoe body of the hull and the sail plan matched by an efficient twin rudder lateral plan which includes various keel options. A pioneering clean and efficient push button control deck arrangement offering ample access to the sea and sun bathing it is another of the key ingredients. All in all the 120 it is a very attractive proposition, created by a team of experts, and built according to Nautor best practice.”

The goal of this lesson is to explain how sailboats work by exploring basic physics principles. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the forces acting on a sailboat and explain how the combination of these forces results in the forward motion of a sailboat. Students should be familiar with vectors and be able to use them to represent forces and moments, and also should be familiar with using free body diagrams to represent forces and moments. A basic understanding of fluid flow and/or resistance might be helpful, but not necessary. This lesson and the follow-on assessment will each take about one hour to complete. Students only need pen/pencil and paper to complete the activities in the lesson, although an optional activity where students make their own sailboats would require additional materials. The classroom activity challenges are centered around small-group discussions based on the questions posed before each break. Free body diagrams, or another conceptual representation of his or her answer, should support each student’s solution to the questions posed in the video. Instructions for the option of having students design their own sailboats as part of this lesson can be found here: https://tryengineering.org/teacher/sail-away/

This is a 3 to 4 day course, depending on wind and conditions, aimed to deliver a safe, informed, confident and competent day sailor/skipper who can confidently command a sailboat up to 10 meters (32.8 feet) and crew during daylight hours in fair conditions in inland waters (bay or lake sailing) or coastal waters up to 5 miles offshore. As you advance and become more proficient as crew or skipper you take on bigger challenges that require proper training to ensure the safety of your family and friends. The bigger the boat or length of adventure the more training you require. Most of us prefer to spend our time on the water and not in a classroom. To facilitate this, IYT has a series of E-learning courses available for the theoretical part of sail and powerboat training.

The 48V EasyBox System provides your boat with the simplest electric drive system. The system is quick to install (plug and play) and all electrical components are contained in one unit. It is designed to be used as a battery only system with a 48V battery bank or with the support of a DC generator as a 'range extender' . The batteries can be charged via the on board generator or shore power connection or at the touch of a button using the re-generation ‘REGEN’ function (when main engine is running or using propeller drag when sailing) Perfect for cruising on waters where combustion engines are not allowed. AGM or Lithium battery banks can be used in an Easybox system. The system is designed for mono-hulls, catamarans or trimarans requiring a single or dual drive system.

Convert your 12-29 HP diesel engine to clean, quiet electric. Eliminate noxious diesel fumes and the frustration of filling up at the pump with the 10KW Brushless Kit featuring a Motenergy brushless motor and a 48V 450 Amp Sevcon Gen-4 Controller that can produce up to 10HP continuous and 28HP peak! Enjoy your sailboat to the fullest, with a silent drive and truly fresh air. This system is recommended for boats up to 12,000 pounds displacement. All our systems have reverse on-the-fly and contactor disable features. "Brushless" means that the motor does not have brushes that will wear out over time, nor will it be a dangerous source of ignition for on-board gas appliances. Larger boats may require a higher power AC or brushless motor. In the U.S. and Canada, brushed motors are only legal for marine use if onboard appliances and accessories use kerosene or diesel (not propane or gasoline) due to the potential for internal motor arcing.

In the past, if you were chartering in Europe, an International Certificate of Competency (ICC) may have been sufficient proof of your ability to safely operate a boat. However, it has recently been brought to our attention that a number of European charter companies and insurance companies will not accept an ICC as sufficient proof to command a yacht for a one week bareboat charter (power or sail). These companies are insisting that the charterer should hold an IYT International Flotilla Skipper or IYT International Bareboat Skipper, power or sail (or equivalent qualification that is on their “approved” list). The charter companies and insurance companies do not have a comfort level handing over an expensive yacht to someone who they feel is not sufficiently qualified to command it for a weeks duration.
