The Arctic’s Long Lesson in Survival - The Atlantic

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/09/arctic-circle-climate-change-fear/598195/

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2022.

Living north of the Arctic Circle meant learning fear and its power to motivate in the face of danger—whether from a bear or climate change. How long did I walk in the footsteps of the bear? It was a warm day, 20 years ago and 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the sky translucent blue behind low mountains. The tundra, just starting to turn autumn crimson and saffron, held all my attention. Eventually, I looked down at the trail. And there: the ovoid front paw prints, claws puncturing a constellation into the mud inches above each toe, trailed by back feet as long as two hand spans. Grizzly. Next to them, indentations from my boots. Both filling slowly with water.

Saved by uncleflo on December 7th, 2014.

House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering Ironwood trees. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the Ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.
