The Arctic’s Long Lesson in Survival - The Atlantic

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/09/arctic-circle-climate-change-fear/598195/

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2022.

Living north of the Arctic Circle meant learning fear and its power to motivate in the face of danger—whether from a bear or climate change. How long did I walk in the footsteps of the bear? It was a warm day, 20 years ago and 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the sky translucent blue behind low mountains. The tundra, just starting to turn autumn crimson and saffron, held all my attention. Eventually, I looked down at the trail. And there: the ovoid front paw prints, claws puncturing a constellation into the mud inches above each toe, trailed by back feet as long as two hand spans. Grizzly. Next to them, indentations from my boots. Both filling slowly with water.

Frontpage -- Terms of Service; Didn't Read

https://tosdr.org/

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2022.

“Terms of Service; Didn't Read” (short: ToS;DR) is a young project started in June 2012 to help fix the “biggest lie on the web”: almost no one really reads the terms of service we agree to all the time. Background. The rough idea behind ToS;DR emerged during the 2011 Chaos Communication Camp near Berlin, with people from Unhosted a movement to create web apps that give users control over their valuable user data and privacy. In the summer of 2012, Hugo Roy (@hugoroyd) started the legal analysis and brought the project to life. Since then, more people have joined the team and have contributed through the reviewer community. Ultimately, all the work is transparent and the discussions happen in public. Our work is funded by non-profits organisations and individual donations and gets released as free software and open data. Please bear in mind that the project is still in the early phase and that most data is subject to important changes. More information about our classification. What does “ToS;DR” mean? the name is inspired by internet acronym TL;DR which stands for "Too Long; Didn't Read" and is often used on blogs and emails when a block of text is just really long and that people are too lazy to read the whole stuff. It was intended more as a code name than as a real name. But it seems that people like it (do you?)

Sailing Uma - Our Boat

https://www.sailinguma.com/our-boat

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

They say a journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step. For us, rather than a step, our journey began with a leap. We sold everything we didn’t need, cars, computers, motorcycles, furniture — everything. What we couldn’t sell, we donated and we used the money to buy a sailboat. Our boat “Uma” is a 1972 Pearson 36. She is neither fancy and expensive, nor cheap and flimsy—to us, she is perfect. We wanted a name that carried with it the motivation and rational that led us to buy her in the first place. Her name was inspired by the Portuguese number 1 (uma), meaning first or primary. She is our first step

C = 4*m + 3*v + 2*(i - f) - 2*a. Anxiety is one of the key elements in the MarketingExperiments Conversion Heuristic. In our Landing Page Optimization Online Course, anxiety is defined as “a psychological concern stimulated by a given element in the sales or sign-up process.” Essentially, anxiety is a negative element on your landing page that reduces the likelihood that a potential customer will take a desired action. It’s no big surprise that experiments with our Research Partners have found third-party privacy and security seals help reduce customer anxiety and improve conversion. So, let’s take a look at two types of seals that can help you reduce customer anxiety.
