A new map shows where people have the lowest impact—but are those the best places to protect? A newly created map reveals the “wildest” places on Earth—places where humans have the lowest impact. The findings could be used to support the push to set aside half of Earth for nature, its authors say. “If you want to know where in the world you can find a place that has not yet been transformed by agriculture, infrastructure, or settlements, [this map] is where to find it,” says Erle Ellis, a global ecologist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County who contributed to the analysis. “There is a very strong consensus on where these places are.” The map, published today in the journal Global Change Biology, knits together four independently developed models for determining where humanity leaves its fingerprints, each using different indicators of activity.

Living north of the Arctic Circle meant learning fear and its power to motivate in the face of danger—whether from a bear or climate change. How long did I walk in the footsteps of the bear? It was a warm day, 20 years ago and 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the sky translucent blue behind low mountains. The tundra, just starting to turn autumn crimson and saffron, held all my attention. Eventually, I looked down at the trail. And there: the ovoid front paw prints, claws puncturing a constellation into the mud inches above each toe, trailed by back feet as long as two hand spans. Grizzly. Next to them, indentations from my boots. Both filling slowly with water.

The Isle of Man is a high-reputable international finance and international business center due to its political stability, business-friendly policies and an attractive fiscal and regulatory environment. In 2006, it came into force the Companies Act 2006, which currently co-exist with present and future companies incorporated under the previous Isle of Man Companies Act 1931. The newest Companies Act presents several advantages over the previous one: These changes have been aimed at competing with jurisdictions that offer international companies that are easy to manage and with advantageous tax systems such as the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands or Bermuda. With the addition that Manx companies are not restricted from carrying out onshore transactions or own assets located on the island.

How do I resolve a git merge conflict in favor of pulled changes? Basically I need to remove all conflicting changes from a working tree without having to go through all of the conflicts with a git mergetool while keeping all conflict-free changes. Preferably doing this while pulling, not afterwards. You can use the recursive "theirs" strategy option.

Most web applications are changed and adapted quite frequently and quickly. Their environment, for example the size and the behaviour of the user base, are constantly changing. What was sufficient yesterday can be insufficient today. Especially in a web environment it is important to monitor and continuously improve the internal quality not only when developing, but also when maintaining the software. Many of the plugins referenced (right) can be used to integrate with PHP projects, but may first need to be configured the create appropriately formatted files when working with PHP projects.

n the halcyon days of early 2005, a project was launched to bring long overdue native Unicode and internationalization support to PHP. It was deemed so far reaching and important that PHP needed to have a version bump. After more than 4 years of development, the project (and PHP 6 for now) was shelved. This talk will introduce Unicode and i18n concepts, explain why Web needs Unicode, why PHP needs Unicode, how we tried to solve it (with examples), and what eventually happened. No sordid details will be left uncovered.

http is a stateless protocol. A way to remember information from page to page is to use cookies. According to Wikipedia: A cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie, or browser cookie, is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while the user is browsing that website. Every time the user loads the website, the browser sends the cookie back to the server to notify the website of the user's previous activity. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information (such as items in a shopping cart) or to record the user's browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited by the user as far back as months or years ago). In this tutorial you will find information about creating and managing cookies with PHP or Javascript. Demo is available in each case.

The 2015 General Election has shown once and for all that our voting system is broken beyond repair. Please sign our petition calling for a fairer, more proportional system to elect MPs. Our voting system was designed for an era when almost everyone voted for the two big parties. But people have changed: they support a wider range of parties than ever before. It’s time the system caught up with how we actually vote.

URL Routing means that you when click on a link, instead of being routed to another page, you stay on the same page and the content changes. When this happens, usually a “hash” will be appended to your current URL so that the user can go directly to the content they need as well as using back and foward buttons in the browser. URL routing is a foundation of almost any single page web application. Sammy.js is a very simple library for doing just that, and I will provide a simple example of how to use it at the end of this article.

Ocean Classrooms (OC) believes strongly that the health of our ocean relies on the young, motivated ocean scientists of our future. These scientists not only thirst to learn more about the ocean through research, but also they need to engage the public in their research and its outcomes. In today’s world, the ability to deliver your message has never been easier, but it is also a crowded market that competes for public attention. Social media has narrowed the scientist-to-public divide. The savvy use of social media can help disseminate a science and conservation message efficiently and bring about effective change that protects and improves the health of our ocean. Moreover, young scientists have more challenges competing for limited research funding because of less experience. Consequently, OC is investing in a grant opportunity for early career marine science researchers to help fund their work and to help disseminate their research through social media, as well as through tradition

As a MySQL or PHP developer, once you step beyond the comfortable confines of English-only character sets, you quickly find yourself entangled in the wonderfully wacky world of UTF-8. On a previous job, we began running into data encoding issues when displaying bios of artists from all over the world. It soon became apparent that there were problems with the stored data, as sometimes the data was correctly encoded and sometimes it was not.

I have a working copy of the project, without any source control meta data. Now, I'd like to do the equivalent of git-clone into this folder, and keep my local changes. git-clone doesn't allow me to clone into an existing folder. What is the best practice here? This can be done by cloning to a new directory, then moving the .git directory into your existing directory.

Here is the output to some inspection that I did. With that in mind, how do I go about changing the default to 1.6 so that when I execute java -version, it tells me 1.6? I am on Fedora but I hope that alternatives works the same way on Ubuntu. You need to run update-alternatives --config java (on Fedora just alternatives --config java) to see what options you have. Then type the number of the JDK you want to use and press enter.

Simple tool to download video lectures from edx.org. It requires the Python interpreter (> 2.6), youtube-dl, BeautifulSoup4 and it's platform independent. It should work fine in your Unix box, in Windows or in Mac OS X. We use youtube-dl to download video lectures from Youtube, with the main idea being that "we don't want to reinvent the wheel". Make sure you have youtube-dl installed in your system. Also, since Youtube changes its layout frequently, make sure that the version of youtube-dl that you have installed is the latest. If in doubt, run youtube-dl --update.
