Reliable Communications: Communicate when regular telephone and internet services are either unreliable or unavailable
Remote Areas. Even the middle of an ocean or on top of a mountain, Satellite Phones allow you to stay in touch. Emergency Backup: When all other local telecoms are down Satellite Phones can give you an emergency backup line. Unobstructed View of the Sky: Working slightly differently from mobile phones, satellite communications depend on having a clear line of sight to the satellite in the sky. They work most effectively when used outside, with as few obstructions (tall buildings, mountains, trees, etc.) as possible.

The Swede 55 was conceived in 1975 by naval architect Knud Reimers of Denmark. He is best known for his design of square meter class yachts and the Udell International. The Swede 55 was a stock design and to this day remains a very popular boat. The Swede 55 was built by Fiskastra Varb shipyard. Upon request of some of Stockholms KSSS members, Reimers designed the Swede 55 as a cruising ocean racing square meter yacht. The Swede 55’s design has an elevated freeboard, a comfortable center-cockpit, a nominal sail area of 55 square meters and additional volume below deck. She was inspired by Rolly Taskers “Siska”, a Knud Reimers 40 square meter boat modified for the Sydney-Hobart Race. The Swede 55 is a nimble, fast and exceptional performing sailing yacht; capable of handling rough seas and keeping her crew safe and comfortable. The boat was built to very high standards as an easily managed yacht. Whether cruising, racing or offshore pursuits, the Swede 55 is powered by a modest sail plan, easily managed by a shorthanded crew, yet offers a full cruising interior with practical accommodations. During this owners ownership, numerous upgrades have been made to her sail inventory, canvas, electronics, wiring, and overall appearance.

Living north of the Arctic Circle meant learning fear and its power to motivate in the face of danger—whether from a bear or climate change. How long did I walk in the footsteps of the bear? It was a warm day, 20 years ago and 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the sky translucent blue behind low mountains. The tundra, just starting to turn autumn crimson and saffron, held all my attention. Eventually, I looked down at the trail. And there: the ovoid front paw prints, claws puncturing a constellation into the mud inches above each toe, trailed by back feet as long as two hand spans. Grizzly. Next to them, indentations from my boots. Both filling slowly with water.

The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. With no previous sailing experience necessary, it’s a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. The brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the event is now in its twelfth edition, the Clipper 2019-20 Race. Started from London on 1 September 2019, the fleet will complete its circumnavigation when it returns eleven months later, in August 2020. Divided into eight legs and between 13 and 16 individual races, you can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select individual legs. It is the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of eleven identical racing yachts, each with a fully qualified skipper and first mate to safely guide the crew. Normally the domain of seasoned pros, this supreme challenge is taken on by ordinary, everyday people. Having completed a rigorous training course, participants are suited and booted in the latest extreme protection gear to commence the race of their lives - an unparalleled challenge where taxi drivers rub shoulders with chief executives, vicars mix with housewives, students work alongside bankers, and engineers team up with rugby players. The sea does not distinguish between Olympians or novices. There is nowhere to hide - if Mother Nature throws down the gauntlet, you must be ready to face the same challenges as the pro racer. Navigate the Doldrums en route to South America, endure epic Southern Ocean storms, experience South African sunsets, face the mountainous seas of the North Pacific - and bond with an international crew creating lifelong memories before returning victorious.

Using solar power only, the catamaran "sun21" undertook the first motorized crossing of the Atlantic with solar power to promote the great potential of this technology for ocean navigation. The "sun21" arrived in New York City on 8 May 2007, 3 pm, having covered about 7000 sea miles. The journey of sun21 was made possible by the association transatlantic21. After the activities in New York, the association donated the solar boat to the WWF Adena/Madrid. The Sun21, now called WWF Solar, has been touring Spain since summer 2010. Additional information about it's first trip for a campaign in Murcia from July 16th-26th is available here (Spanish only). The crew of the sun21 was awarded by the Guinness World Records for the fastest transatlantic crossing made completely under solar power.

Six stage Reverse osmosis water filter system. Reverse Osmosis: The ultimate in water filtration Crystal clear pure refreshing water on tap. Using a Six stage water filtration system the EMWC reverse osmosis delivers unrivalled quality in water filtration. 1st Stage water filter 5 micron Polypropylene filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes all particles above 5 micron from the water supply this includes metals and general water sediment. 2nd Stage carbon water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes, Herbicides, Pesticides, Trihalomethanes, Chlorine, Organic Chemcals, lead and aluminium. 3rd Stage 1 Micron Polypropylene water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes all particles above 1 micron from the water supply this includes any remaining water sediment. 4th stage Membrane 50 gpd (life Span 18 months Approx). The membrane creates the finest filtration, the treated water is forced through the membrane and any un-pure water is discarded this is generally around 75 – 80% allowing through just pure filtered ater to enter the pressurised holding tank. 5th Stage In Line Activated Carbon water Filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Once the faucet is opened the water goes through a final carbon water filter that effectively polishes the water prior to your consumption. Six Stage Ultra Violet Filtration. our UV systems employ a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp surronded by a water jacket whose inner wall is made from a special UVC-transparent quartz material. The Lamp Produces a very strong spectral line at 254nm in the shortwave region, which is the waveband most lethal to micro organisms. The UV light shines powerfully through water passing along the unit. Destroying the cell DNA (or RNA in the case of viruses) making the micro organisms inactive. We use a stainless steel water chamber maximising full use of the available ultra-Violet energy, resulting in long exposure times and high doses and minimising UV light absorption into the chamber wall.

Richard and Roz Smith seem rather surprised to find themselves on board their Oyster 56, bobbing gently on a pontoon at Shamrock Quay, Southampton. It is the boat they have been refitting for the past nine months ahead of a “four-or-five-year” circumnavigation. They are surprised in part because the long, expensive fit-out work is finally drawing to a close (although there are winch bits on the saloon table and air-con ducting protruding from the panelling). But also surprised to be taking off for such an ambitious trip by themselves.

Papaia Praia was born from a mother and daughter’s dream. A pharmacist and a dentist, both with one will: create a swimwear for the real women. For the Portuguese woman with all the shapes, for the mother running after her children at the beach, for the young woman who wants a delicate and feminine item, for the woman who doesn’t want to show much and the one who likes to show too much. We wanted designs that embodies the reality of every woman not made for cover-models. Because our world, though dreamful, it’s the real world. We created our brand in 2017, almost as a joke, with every item handmade by us in a guestroom turned atelier. A couple of friends’ orders became hundreds of requests from friends of friends and customer all over the country, thus, in March 2018 Papaia Praia was launched, with national production and full dedication to this project. All our items are designed and hand-made in Portugal, with high quality fabrics. We are environmentally conscious, our lycras come from fishermen and plastics found in the ocean, and we work in a controlled and safe environment. We are a Portuguese brand. Designed for Portuguese women. And made in Portugal. All our products are produced with LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, providing durability 5 to 10 times higher than regular fabric.

The Club was founded in 1972 on Queen Mary Reservoir which was originally built between 1919 and 1924. We are very proud of our rich heritage as a top racing venue, the home of the iconic Bloody Mary as well as a friendly members Club with a firm place in the local community. The plans for building the reservoir were originally concieved in 1912 when it was first thought that two would be built. These were subsequently altered with the bund (or baffle) put in place to promote water circulation from inlet to outlet. This measure was considered to be important to promote the purity of the water prior to the introduction of chlorination in 1916. The reservoir was completed on Dec 31st 1924 and opened by King George V on June 12th 1925. It has a surface area of 707 acres and has a capacity of 6,700 million gallons. The length of the perimeter is nearly four miles and the City of London could easily be accommodated in it. Click here for more details.

You are welcome to join one of the courses advertised on our website. Alternatively, we would be delighted to come to your office and run a sailing course for yourself and your colleagues. There may be a certain charm to such convenience. In London we run Day Skipper, Yachtmaster and Ocean Yachtmaster navigation classes as well as the RYA 1 day courses in various locations. We usually have something running within the City, Canary Wharf, Holborn and Limehouse but we will and do run courses anywhere in London. Shorebased sailing courses are extremely popular within the Capital. We have a base in Limehouse at the Cruising Association from where we run the full range of RYA shorebased courses but we also specialise in going into the offices of companies all over London, from Canary Wharf to Brentford, and running evening classes for employees of those companies and their family and friends. ‘Outsiders’ to these companies (ie non employees) are also often allowed to attend.

SAILBOATDATA.COM is a database that contains information on nearly 8000 production and semi-production sailboats dating back to 1900. Boats are generally listed using their class designation rather than the manufacturer or builder name. For example a BENETEAU FIRST 456 will be listed as FIRST 456 (BENETEAU) One could also go to the BUILDERS section and search BENETEAU. All the boats built by BENETEAU should be listed within that title. Search results default to alphabetical, 25 per page. Use SORT BY: to switch your results to sort by year built or LOA.

Another category that showcased great diversity in design and execution was the cruising cats. The HH 55 from China unanimously claimed the prize. In this unusual Boat of the Year fleet, the Best Cruising Catamaran class was yet another category made up of three boats that were very different in terms of size and execution: the 38-foot Maine Cat 38, the 47-foot Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 and the 55-foot HH 55. All three addressed their respective stated purposes very well, once again leaving the judges a challenging task in sorting out a winner. “We’ve got small, medium and large in this class,” said Bill Bolin. Starting with the smallest of the three, the Maine Cat 38 was, according to its entry form, “a performance cruising multihull designed to be fast, comfortable and easy to singlehand from a central weather-protected helm with excellent 360-degree visibility.” Built of thermoformed Corecell-infused polyester resin, it was one of the highest of high-tech boats in the entire contest.

Modern construction, smart design, and practical engineering keep the new MJM 50z at the top of her game, and ready to make her owners very happy. Commercially driven industrial design often breeds a certain level of ennui, because the results frequently look remarkably similar. We can’t blame the designers or the manufacturers. They merely have responded to the public’s whims and fancies, which can make or break any new product. The MJM 50z, on the other hand, has a distinctive personality, derived in equal measure from CEO Bob Johnstone’s knowledge of which features mean the most to the owners—ease of use, comfort, and pride of ownership—and Doug Zurn’s artful rendering of those features.

I have been wondering about this a lot in Mini Simmons surfboard design (surfboard design in general)—what is a hull and how does it influence the board and the ride? Two factors are at work when a planing surfboard is in motion: the propulsion power, or force, that creates forward motion (the wave energy); the resistance that opposes it (your fat ass standing on the board). When at rest, a surfers weight is borne entirely by the buoyant force (also depending on how much beer you drank the night before). At low speeds every hull acts as a displacement hull, meaning that the buoyant force is mainly responsible for supporting the surfer. As speed increases, hydrodynamic lift increases as well. Ok, you got to reach back to some physics for this one.
