stream.m is created to be an open source solution for streaming live video right into the web browser using the HTML5 video tag and Google's WebM video format. The current version is a working prototype, which showcases the main ideas. The main design goal is low resource usage. Has a web interface with a realtime bandwidth monitor (with the resolution of 1/10 of a second) for spotting network congestion. Also supports simultaneous streams (channels).

WebM is the new free-to-use royalty free video format for the web. Why should video not be free and royalty free when the underpinnings of the web are free and royalty-free: HTML, Javascript, CSS, PNG, HTTP, TCP/IP? Now we have a viable alternative for H264 that competes in quality and is being supported not just by software but by hardware companies too. Welcome to the future of Web Video.

I will be interested to stream & encode live content. Today, I am more familiar with broadcast MPEG-TS standard and UDP streaming. So for encoding, I have no trouble of understanding, but for streaming, I do not know the recommandations.
The file server question was just answered today. So for streaming live webm content, what kind of server, technology (UDP ...), timing constraint ... do I need ? Thanks for your help,

Streaming WebM to display in browser with HTML5 is currently quite problematic – none of the well-known streaming servers support WebM at the moment. Current popular options are either Java-based stream-m and experimental 2.4-beta release of Icecast. Lesser known option is to use FFmpegs FFserver to stream WebM video. For this to work you need a decently current FFmpeg release (this article was written using stable 1.0 release) compiled with libvpx and ffserver support. New builds for FFmpeg are available for Windows and Linux.
