HAProxy is a free, very fast and reliable solution offering high availability, load balancing, and proxying for TCP and HTTP-based applications. It is particularly suited for very high traffic web sites and powers quite a number of the world's most visited ones. Over the years it has become the de-facto standard opensource load balancer, is now shipped with most mainstream Linux distributions, and is often deployed by default in cloud platforms. Since it does not advertise itself, we only know it's used when the admins report it :-) Its mode of operation makes its integration into existing architectures very easy and riskless, while still offering the possibility not to expose fragile web servers to the net. Each version brought its set of features on top of the previous one. Upwards compatibility is a very important aspect of HAProxy, and even version 1.5 is able to run with configurations made for version 1.0 13 years before. Often referred to as a Swiss army knife of networking tools, this versatile command can assist you in monitoring, testing, and sending data across network connections. We will be exploring this on an Ubuntu 12.04 VPS, but netcat should be available on almost any modern Linux distribution. Ubuntu ships with the BSD variant of netcat, and this is what we will be using in this guide. Other versions may operate differently or provide other options.

The OPTIONS method is a somewhat obscure part of the HTTP standard that could be used today with a strong impact on the interconnectedness of the interwebs while requiring minimal effort. It's role is well defined in RFC2616, yet no web services that I can find are taking advantage of it. What is the HTTP OPTIONS method? To quote the spec: This method allows the client to determine the options and/or requirements associated with a resource, or the capabilities of a server, without implying a resource action or initiating a resource retrieval. Minimally, the response should be a 200 OK and have an Allow header with a list of HTTP methods that may be used on this resource. A WebSocket is a standard protocol for two-way data transfer between a client and server. The WebSockets protocol does not run over HTTP, instead it is a separate implementation on top of TCP. A WebSocket connection allows full-duplex communication between a client and server so that either side can push data to the other through an established connection. The reason why WebSockets, along with the related technologies of Server-sent Events (SSE) and WebRTC data channels, are important is that HTTP is not meant for keeping open a connection for the server to frequently push data to a web browser. Previously, most web applications would implement long polling via frequent Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) requests as shown in the below diagram.

Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities can be pretty dangerous. On web applications, they can lead to everything from breaches in privacy to complete account compromisation. One of the many ways that attackers can take advantage of XSS holes is by reading the information stored in the browser cookies and using it to impersonate a legitimate user. To the vulnerable site, there is usually no difference between the credentials provided by the real user and those provided by an attacker– so everything looks peachy on the surface.

This module uses a rule-based rewriting engine (based on a regular-expression parser) to rewrite requested URLs on the fly. It supports an unlimited number of rules and an unlimited number of attached rule conditions for each rule, to provide a really flexible and powerful URL manipulation mechanism. The URL manipulations can depend on various tests, of server variables, environment variables, HTTP headers, or time stamps. Even external database lookups in various formats can be used to achieve highly granular URL matching. This module operates on the full URLs (including the path-info part) both in per-server context (httpd.conf) and per-directory context (.htaccess) and can generate query-string parts on result. The rewritten result can lead to internal sub-processing, external request redirection or even to an internal proxy throughput.

How can I redirect the user from one page to another using jQuery? jQuery is not necessary, and window.location.replace(...) will best simulate an HTTP redirect. It is better than using window.location.href =, because replace() does not put the originating page in the session history, meaning the user won't get stuck in a never-ending back-button fiasco. If you want to simulate someone clicking on a link, use location.href. If you want to simulate an HTTP redirect, use location.replace.

"The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards". In Fedora, the httpd package provides the Apache HTTP Server. Run rpm -q httpd to see if the httpd package is installed. If it is not installed and you want to use the Apache HTTP Server, run the following command as the root user to install it.
