I'd like to for once leave SELinux running on a server for the alleged increased security. I usually disable SELinux to get anything to work. How do I tell SELinux to allow MySQL connections? The most I've found in the documentation is this line from mysql.com: If you are running under Linux and Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is enabled, make sure you have disabled SELinux protection for the mysqld process.

Here is the output to some inspection that I did. With that in mind, how do I go about changing the default to 1.6 so that when I execute java -version, it tells me 1.6? I am on Fedora but I hope that alternatives works the same way on Ubuntu. You need to run update-alternatives --config java (on Fedora just alternatives --config java) to see what options you have. Then type the number of the JDK you want to use and press enter.

Deluge is a new BitTorrent client, created using Python and GTK+. It is intended to bring a native, full-featured client to Linux GTK+ desktop environments such as GNOME and XFCE. It supports features such as DHT (Distributed Hash Tables), PEX (µTorrent-compatible Peer Exchange), and UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play) that allow one to more easily share BitTorrent data even from behind a router with virtually zero configuration of port-forwarding.

When we first designed targeted policy, we defined a domain that allowed users and administrators to login and have the same access privileges they would have had if SELinux was disabled. Similarly, we wanted to allow third party applications to be installed and run without requiring the administrator/user to write special policy rules for these applications. They would just work.

This is huide howto install Chromium Browser (with Pepper Flash plugin and Chrome PDF viewer plugin) on CentOS 6 / Red Hat (RHEL) 6. Move directly to Chromium install guide. It’s true Google Says Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Is Obsolete and after latest update, Google Chrome won’t work anymore on CentOS 6/Red Hat (RHEL) 6. Someone might think that it’s time to change Firefox or Opera, but if you have get used to Google Chrome, then it might be hard. Currently it might be possible to compile newer GCC and get Google Chrome working on Enterprise Linux 6, but more important news is that, the Google says Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Is Obsolete and later Google Chrome updates might need something new dependencies what Enterprise Linux 6 doesn’t have.

But, I'm not able to find out this command and/or package name. How do I install semanage command under RedHat Enterprise Linux?

I decided to setup Samba using one of my existing Linux servers utilizing Fedora Core 9. I have a filer (OpenFiler) that I use for most of my storage but I like to have a “backup” system to send files to. My first problem setting up Samba was permission denied at directories to which I knew the permissions were set correctly. After some digging and trial and error I found out the SELinux was the issue denying access. The smb.conf file clearly states what is required to set the proper permissions but if you use Webmin or other samba admin interface so you may not see the instructions unless you go digging.

Samba Fedora 16. Not playing well with others, it doesn't want to share..!!! samba_selinux - Security Enhanced Linux Policy for Samba. After setting up samba and creating all kinds of scenarios and adding users I could NOT login from my windows machine, and my linux Fedora 16 server, never gave me any kind of warning. Again there was no error or warnings from SELinux.

After upgrading to Fedora 17, I found that my home directory Samba shares had mysteriously stopped working. After checking my logs (and complaining on identi.ca) I found out that in Fedora 17 the SELinux attributes for home directories have changed to disallow sharing with Samba.

Adobe's Flash plugin cannot be included in Fedora because it is not free/libre and open source software. Adobe does release a version of the Flash plugin for Linux, and this can be used in Firefox, Konqueror and other popular Internet browsers. When Adobe releases a newer version of the Linux Flash plugin, it makes packages available for Fedora, but Fedora cannot include Adobe's plugin as long as it is unavailable as free and open source software.

RPM Fusion provides software that the Fedora Project or Red Hat doesn't want to ship. That software is provided as precompiled RPMs for all current Fedora versions and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6; you can use the RPM Fusion repositories with tools like yum and PackageKit. RPM Fusion is a merger of Dribble, Freshrpms, and Livna; our goal is to simplify end-user experience by grouping as much add-on software as possible in a single location. Also see our FoundingPrinciples.

If you don't have an optical drive (eg on the recent batch of netbooks) then it is useful to be able to install the Fedora 10 DVD from a usb stick. You can just use the live image and transfer to a 1GB usb but that doesn't allow any package selection, Development Tools, Desktop choice (Gnome or KDE) If you have a 4gb usb stick then you can use a little trick to turn it into a dvd installer. Basically you use the livecd-iso-to-disk script from an existing Fedora installation (or even a livecd session) to install the boot.iso image (rather than the livecd image)
