This is the Official CentOS 7 x86_64 HVM image that has been built with a minimal profile, suiteable for use in HVM instance types only. The image contains just enough packages to run within AWS, bring up an SSH Server and allow users to login. Please note that this is the default CentOS-7 image that we recommend everyone uses. It contains packages that are updated at points in time to include critical security updates.

This guide will explain how to set up a site over https. The tutorial uses a self signed key so will work well for a personal website or testing purposes. This is provided as is so proceed at your own risk and take backups! For an SSL encrypted web server you will need a few things. ZFS, short form of Zettabyte Filesystem is an advanced and highly scalable filesystem. It was originally developed by Sun Microsystems and is now part of the OpenZFS project. With so many filesystems available on Linux, it is quite natural to ask what is special about ZFS. Unlike other filesystem, it is not just a filesystem but a logical volume manager as well. Some of the features of ZFS that make it popular are: Data Integrity - data consistency and integrity are ensured through copy-on-write and checksum techniques; Pooling of storage space - available storage drives can be put together into a single pool called zpool; Software RAID - Setting up a raidz array is as simple as issuing a single command; Inbuilt volume manager - ZFS acts as a volume manager as well; Snaphots, clones, compression - these are some of the advanced features that ZFS provides.

In addition to the tasks often performed by users in Section 44.1, “End User Control of SELinux”, SELinux administrators could be expected to perform a number of additional tasks. These tasks typically require root access to the system. Such tasks are significantly easier under the targeted policy. For example, there is no need to consider adding, editing, or deleting Linux users from the SELinux users, nor do you need to consider roles. This section covers the types of tasks required of an administrator who maintains Red Hat Enterprise Linux running SELinux.

Here is the output to some inspection that I did. With that in mind, how do I go about changing the default to 1.6 so that when I execute java -version, it tells me 1.6? I am on Fedora but I hope that alternatives works the same way on Ubuntu. You need to run update-alternatives --config java (on Fedora just alternatives --config java) to see what options you have. Then type the number of the JDK you want to use and press enter.

This tutorial shows how to set up a CentOS 5.2 server that offers all services needed by ISPs and web hosters: Apache web server (SSL-capable), Postfix mail server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, BIND DNS server, Proftpd FTP server, MySQL server, Dovecot POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc. This tutorial is written for the 32-bit version of CentOS 5.2, but should apply to the 64-bit version with very little modifications as well.

cPanel is one of the most popular Commercial control panel for Linux web hosting, I have been working with cPanel for 2+ years to manage all Shared, Reseller and business hosting customers. It comes with cPanel and Web Host Manager, which makes web hosting easier for you. WHM provides you root level access to your server whereas cPanel provides user level access interface to manage their own web hosting account on the server.

CentOS has an extremely powerful firewall built in, commonly referred to as iptables, but more accurately is iptables/netfilter. Iptables is the userspace module, the bit that you, the user, interact with at the command line to enter firewall rules into predefined tables. Netfilter is a kernel module, built into the kernel, that actually does the filtering. There are many GUI front ends for iptables that allow users to add or define rules based on a point and click user interface, but these often lack the flexibility of using the command line interface and limit the users understanding of what's really happening. We're going to learn the command line interface of iptables.

The reason we have developed this suite is that we have found over the years of providing server services that many of the tools available for the task are either over-complex, not user friendly, or simply aren't as effective as they could be. We have developed an SPI iptables firewall that is comprehensive, straight-forward, easy and flexible to configure. Login Failure Daemon (lfd): To complement the ConfigServer Firewall (csf), we have developed a Login Failure Daemon (lfd) process that runs all the time and periodically (every X seconds) scans the latest log file entries for login attempts against your server that continually fail within a short period of time. Such attempts are often called "Brute-force attacks" and the daemon process responds very quickly to such patterns and blocks offending IP's quickly.

In our last “iptables Tips and Tricks” installment, we talked about Advanced Policy Firewall (APF) configuration, so it should come as no surprise that in this installment, we’re turning our attention to ConfigServer Security & Firewall (CSF). Before we get started, you should probably run through the list of warnings I include at the top of the APF blog post and make sure you have your Band-Aid ready in case you need it.

OpenSSH (or Secure SHell) has become a de facto standard for remote access replacing the telnet protocol. SSH has made protocols such as telnet redundant due, in most part, to the fact that the connection is encrypted and passwords are no longer sent in plain text for all to see. However, a default installation of ssh isn't perfect, and when running an ssh server there are a few simple steps that can dramatically harden an installation.

An important part of maintaining the performance of a CentOS Enterprise Linux system involves ensuring that adequate swap space is available comparable to memory demands placed on the system. The goal of this chapter, therefore, is to provide an overview of swap management on CentOS.

Recently I signed up for a different VPS hosting partner as the one I was using had a dreadful latency when dealing with international connections. The new VPS at Linode I am using has good ping times, the control panel often does correctly what it should do, but the out-of-the-box CentOS profile was in my opinion not what I am used to. RHEL and Fedora sys-admins know about SELinux and the pains and pleasures it can induce. If you are new to SELinux, be sure to read a little bit of background: SELinux for dummies and Dan Walsh's Blog. Or watch these videos recorded by Scott Dowdle: "SELinux demystified", "Intro to SELinux" Part 1, Part 2.

Novell/SUSE Linux uses a system of scripts to determine which services to run on system boot. These scripts exist in /etc/init.d/ (or the symbolic link /etc/rc.d/), and are referred to as 'init scripts.' They help dictate which services are active in each runlevel, and also allow the services to be manually controlled. For more information on runlevels, see this article. Each service that ships with Novell/SUSE Linux installs a script in /etc/init.d/. If a custom service is installed it may not have a init script. This article explains how to create these scripts.

Here is a list of repos which are useful for extra packages while building up your system. You can use them manually and have them set at disabled until you need them or you can experiment with yum priorities which is the recommended way. Using priorities you can control which repo gets used if multiple repos supply the same packages. If using yum priorities you will need to perform some tasks to start with.

The first thing on your mind when setting up a new Linux server (dedicated or VPS) is how you can increase security. One of the best tools in your bag of tricks should be the CSF (ConfigServer) LFD (Login Failure Daemon) firewall. CSF/LFD has their own script license, making it free of charge with no warranty or support. Before installing CSF, please disable other security applications such as denyhosts, fail2ban or cPanel’s cPHulk. Installation is a breeze and consists of the following commands:

Deluge is a new BitTorrent client, created using Python and GTK+. It is intended to bring a native, full-featured client to Linux GTK+ desktop environments such as GNOME and XFCE. It supports features such as DHT (Distributed Hash Tables), PEX (µTorrent-compatible Peer Exchange), and UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play) that allow one to more easily share BitTorrent data even from behind a router with virtually zero configuration of port-forwarding.

A Unix daemon is a program that runs in the “background,” enabling you to do other work in the “foreground,” and is independent of control from a terminal. Daemons can either be started by a process, such as a system startup script, where there is no controlling terminal, or by a user at a terminal without “tying up” that terminal as the daemon runs. But which daemons can you safely play with? Which should you leave running?
