There is a stable source for the WIndows 7 installation media ISO to download your licensed version here. I would use 64-bit for 4gb or more RAM, 32-bit (x86) for 3gb or less RAM. You can slipstream the latest Updates into the installer ISO to save at least an hour's Updating after install using Update 7 installation media. However it may take an hour to do this so consider how much you want this.  Due to problems with Updates which have recently grown more serious, MS has also just released a rollup you can install or slipstream into media here: Simplifying updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 | Windows for IT Pros . Burn ISO to DVD or to USB flash stick (minimum size of 4GB required) using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool or alternatively to DVD using ImgBurn  at 4x speed, to flash stick using Rufus selecting UEFI for GPT for UEFI BIOS, or Legacy MBR for Legacy BIOS. For UEFI installs format flash stick with Option One of  UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows making sure the settings shown in picture don't jump around after adding the ISO. You have a UEFI install if Disk Management shows an EFI System partition on the hard drive, the BIOS shows UEFI settings and it's Boot menu offers to boot the DVD or a UEFI-formatted flash stick as an EFI device.

HOWTO: Repair a broken Ext4 Superblock in Ubuntu « Linux Expresso

http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/repair-a-broken-ext4-superblock-in-ubuntu/

Saved by uncleflo on August 9th, 2014.

This has happened to me a few times, and it’s not a nice problem to find yourself in. You computer won’t boot, all your filesystem checks tell you you’ve a bad superblock, but you cant seem to find how to fix it. Well, here goes :) This guide is for ext4 , though I’ll explain how other filesystems can be cured along the way. The easiest way to carry all this out, seeing as your computer probably won’t boot at this stage, is to download and burn a copy of Parted Magic. Boot from that, and you’ll access to a number of useful tools.

21.2. The Z File System (ZFS)

Saved by uncleflo on September 20th, 2013.

The Z file system, originally developed by Sun™, is designed to use a pooled storage method in that space is only used as it is needed for data storage. It is also designed for maximum data integrity, supporting data snapshots, multiple copies, and data checksums. It uses a software data replication model, known as RAID-Z. RAID-Z provides redundancy similar to hardware RAID, but is designed to prevent data write corruption and to overcome some of the limitations of hardware RAID.

Cool Solutions: Creating Custom init Scripts

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15380.html

Saved by uncleflo on September 5th, 2013.

Novell/SUSE Linux uses a system of scripts to determine which services to run on system boot. These scripts exist in /etc/init.d/ (or the symbolic link /etc/rc.d/), and are referred to as 'init scripts.' They help dictate which services are active in each runlevel, and also allow the services to be manually controlled. For more information on runlevels, see this article. Each service that ships with Novell/SUSE Linux installs a script in /etc/init.d/. If a custom service is installed it may not have a init script. This article explains how to create these scripts.

initrd - Linux Command - Unix Command

http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl4_initrd.htm

Saved by uncleflo on August 31st, 2013.

The special file /dev/initrd is a read-only block device. Device /dev/initrd is a RAM disk that is initialized (e.g. loaded) by the boot loader before the kernel is started. The kernel then can use the the block device /dev/initrd's contents for a two phased system boot-up. In the first boot-up phase, the kernel starts up and mounts an initial root file-system from the contents of /dev/initrd (e.g. RAM disk initialized by the boot loader). In the second phase, additional drivers or other modules are loaded from the initial root device's contents. After loading the additional modules, a new root file system (i.e. the normal root file system) is mounted from a different device.

Device map - GNU GRUB Manual 2.00~rc1

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Device-map.html#Device-map

Saved by uncleflo on August 31st, 2013.

If the device map file exists, the GRUB utilities (grub-probe, grub-setup, etc.) read it to map BIOS drives to OS devices. This file consists of lines like this: (device) file Device is a drive specified in the GRUB syntax (see Device syntax), and file is an OS file, which is normally a device file. Historically, the device map file was used because GRUB device names had to be used in the configuration file, and they were derived from BIOS drive numbers. The map between BIOS drives and OS devices cannot always be guessed correctly: for example, GRUB will get the order wrong if you exchange the boot sequence between IDE and SCSI in your BIOS.

GNU GRUB is a Multiboot boot loader. It was derived from GRUB, the GRand Unified Bootloader, which was originally designed and implemented by Erich Stefan Boleyn. Briefly, a boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts. It is responsible for loading and transferring control to the operating system kernel software (such as the Hurd or Linux). The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system (e.g. GNU).

How do i know the BIOS number for my SCSI disks

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LILO-6.html

Saved by uncleflo on August 30th, 2013.

The contribution from Marc Tanguy (mtanguy@ens.uvsq.fr), 2001-09-27. If you have an adaptec scsi card (2940u2, 29160, 39160), you simply use the 'diagnose' mode (using BIOS v3.10.0 recommended). It must be activated in the scsi card BIOS menu. If you don't own an adaptec card, you have to know what is the 'booting' disk (usually ID 0, but not necessary, it can be defined in the scsi card BIOS) where LILO is going to be found and start : this is the first disk so it has number 0x80. Then it's very simple, the BIOS follows the IDs.

Saved by uncleflo on July 14th, 2013.

The first step for configuring a DHCP client is to make sure the kernel recognizes the network interface card. Most cards are recognized during the installation process and the system is configured to use the correct kernel module for the card. If a card is added after installation, Kudzu[6] should recognize it and prompt for the configuration of the corresponding kernel module for it. Be sure to check the Hardware Compatibility List available at http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/. If the network card is not configured by the installation program or Kudzu and you know which kernel module to load for it, refer to Chapter 37, Kernel Modules for details on loading kernel modules.

Making An NTFS USB Boot Disk | Bjorn3D.com

http://www.bjorn3d.com/2009/07/making-an-ntfs-usb-boot-disk/#.UPvNV2dajTp

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2013.

This morning when I got up I had no intention of writing a guide to making a bootable NTFS USB Drive. As things often happen on a review site you often find yourself waking up intending to get one thing done and end up going in a totally different direction. Today was one of those days. I’ve been dealing with SSD, Platter hard drives and USB Drives all week. Suddenly this morning I found myself thinking wouldn’t it be nice to be able to boot to a USB disk with the NTFS file system and run diagnostics, memory tests, and maybe install Vista or XP from a USB disk. How about being able to not only install Vista from a USB disk but once Vista is installed have all the review benchmarks and files I needed consolidated on one flash drive instead of searching for a bunch of disks scattered around my review area.

Most of the files above are disk images. Download the file to your C: drive, put a fresh disk in your A: drive, then click on the file to create the bootdisk. The W2K Pro disks are zipped images from the MS CD. Best bet is to download them, upzip them to a new folder where you also put makeboot.exe and makebt32.exe into and then run one of the makeboot utils depending on if you're in dos or windows to create the diskset. Or, one can use Winimage to just create a single bootdisk. The Win9X OEM disks are Images of the Microsoft bootdisks that came with your OS. They put the utilities you need in a ramdrive, or virtual disk which is usually the next drive letter up from your hard drive partitions. Use my Custom disks for a faster, easier to use utility.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives

Saved by uncleflo on October 8th, 2012.

Rufus is a small utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides you with everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it's about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer or Windows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for managing to keep up). It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USB from ISOs (1). A non exhaustive list of Rufus supported ISOs is also provided at the bottom of this page (2). Finally, please remember that once formatted, your drive is still usable as before to transfer data: it doesn't have to be dedicated for DOS or ISO installation only.
