Paphos International Sailing Club (known as PISC) was formed in 1999 by a group of sailing enthusiasts, the purpose being to promote all aspects of sailing and boating in Cyprus. During the early years of the Club's existence, activities for the most part involved the sharing of common interests and knowledge in a social setting. Today the Club consists of three active sections: Power Boating, Dinghy Sailing and Offshore Cruising. The aims of the Club remain the same, which is to promote sailing and boating in a friendly self-help Club with great atmosphere. We offer various boating events throughout the year, including Dinghy Regattas, Power Boat Treasure Hunts and Cruising Rallies in the Meditteranean, as well as numerous social get-togethers such as Beach Barbeques, Quiz Nights, Ten-pin Bowling and Dinner-Dances. The Club pays close attention to safety and follows RYA and Cypriot protocols in all activities on the water. We have two Rigid Inflatable safety boats manned by fully trained club members, which are on duty at every event. The Club conducts numerous courses for members in sailing proficiency and safety throughout the year.

ICC Sail Course - Portsmouth and Chichester Marine Training Portsmouth and Chichester Marine Training

The ICC Sail course gives you the certificate you need for chartering sailing yachts in the Mediterranean and further afield. The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is used as evidence of the skipper’s competence by many countries. At the end of this course you will have done the assessment needed to gain your ICC for sail boats. The first day will be spent refreshing the skills that will be needed to pass the ICC assessment. This will include pre-start checks and safety briefing, berthing, close quarters manoeuvres, handling under sail, man overboard practice, revision of the collision regulations, navigation techniques and pilotage. The second day will be the assessment day. There are no formal requirements but this course is not aimed at beginners. It is recommended your abilities and knowledge are up to the same standard as the RYA’s Day Skipper qualification. The ultimate antifouling group test - Motor Boat & Yachting

Our antifouling paint test threw up some interesting results. At first glance the boards show a range of different results, but only when you investigate the product and why it performed how it did do you fully understand what has happened.
Firstly it shows that professional application paints seem to perform marginally better. The higher toxicity of the paint is deemed too risky for the public to handle, so perhaps that’s why it’s also more effective.
Rather more surprising is that, contrary to expectations, many of the paints performed better in the Mediterranean than in the UK, although as the variations in our UK results proved, that may not apply to other areas of the Med.
The muddy waters of the East Coast proved the most challenging with all the paints showing plenty of slime and the occasional patch of weed.
However, the big surprise for us was the relative success of the silicone paints in a static test that would usually have favoured soft or copolymer copper-based antifoulings.
When choosing a paint, it’s important to think about how much you’ll be using your boat, as some of the hard paints will perform so much better with regular usage, while if you only plan on pottering up a river occasionally, you might be better off by going for a soft self-eroding paint.
Armed with the results of this test, you should be able to make a more informed decision on what paint to use this season, even if you’re not bold enough to try the silicone alternative.
