CARBON nanotubes are predicted to have interesting mechanical properties—in particular, high stiffness and axial strength—as a result of their seamless cylindrical graphitic structure1–5. Their mechanical properties have so far eluded direct measurement, however, because of the very small dimensions of nanotubes. Here we estimate the Young's modulus of isolated nanotubes by measuring, in the transmission electron microscope, the amplitude of their intrinsic thermal vibrations. We find that carbon nanotubes have exceptionally high Young's moduli, in the terapascal (TPa) range. Their high stiffness, coupled with their low density, implies that nanotubes might be useful as nanoscale fibres in strong, lightweight composite materials.

Internships have received a lot of publicity lately, and not all of it has been good. There has been much public debate about graduates being exploited by employers who are reportedly using a rolling programme of unpaid placements as an alternative to taking on a salaried employee. There have also been reports of internships at top city firms being ‘auctioned off’ to the highest bidder and of young people being expected to work long hours without even their food and travel expenses being covered.

Student and youth enterprise has come to the fore in recent years. Young entrepreneurs are spilling out of schools and universities in greater numbers than ever as an antidote to rising levels of unemployment, a lack of well-paid graduate jobs, and the prominence of entrepreneurship as a career option.

Sun, smoking, alcohol and stress can all add years to your face. By Joan Kron.
For years, the similarities between Jeanne and Susan were uncanny. Growing up, the identical twin sisters not only were mirror images of each other, but also shared a bunch of preferences and personality quirks. Even now, living 1,000 miles apart — Jeanne in Ohio, Susan in Florida — “we’ll send identical Christmas cards to our parents and choose the exact same gift wrap,” Jeanne says. But they do have some differences, she adds: “We don’t have the same taste in men or in weather.”
