Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

The proven versatility of d2 Dura Profile makes it a logical and cost-effective alternative to carbon, steel, aluminium, wood or other conventional materials. We carry one of the largest stock holdings of GRP profiles in the country including Angle, Channel, Box and Tube sections, all of which are designed to meet or exceed the higher performance E23 grade requirement of the BS EN 13706 standard (which covers the specification of GRP pultruded profiles). Dura Profile structural profiles also offer unrivalled strength to weight, non-conductive, noncorrosive and chemically resistant and fire-resistant properties. The standard profile range we stock are produced in 6m lengths in ISO resin and in dark grey RAL 7043. Dura Profiles can also be produced in other resin systems and sizes as a special order, subject to minimum order quantities. d2 Dura Profile provides the engineer with a high degree of design freedom and offers exceptional material properties for a wide range of applications. The profiles shown below can be cut to specific sizes by our fabrication team. Please speak to a Dura Composites sales representative on +44 (0)1255 446838 to discuss your requirements.

Webpage with technical analysis of te various metal alloys. It contains description of chemical contents, physical properties, and other information. Stainless steel grade 301 is usually supplied in the form of strips and wires, with a tensile strength of up to 1800 Mpa, to produce tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. By subjecting grade 301 to controlled analysis it is capable of retaining sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions. This form of grade 301 may be used in aircraft, rail car components and architectural structures. Tempers of this grade, ranging from ¾ to full hard, may be used in applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs. Grade 301L, which is the low carbon form of grade 301, is the ideal choice for applications that require good ductility. Grade 301LN is another variant. This contains a higher percentage of nitrogen and exhibits a higher work harden rate compared to standard 301. Only grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666. 301L and 301LN are represented by other conventions. Grade 301L is represented by JIS G4305 and 301LN by EN10088-2 as grade 1.4318.

Cards can be organized into Masonry-like columns with just CSS by wrapping them in .card-columns. Cards are built with CSS column properties instead of flexbox for easier alignment. Cards are ordered from top to bottom and left to right. Heads up! Your mileage with card columns may vary. To prevent cards breaking across columns, we must set them to display: inline-block as column-break-inside: avoid isn’t a bulletproof solution yet.

CARBON nanotubes are predicted to have interesting mechanical properties—in particular, high stiffness and axial strength—as a result of their seamless cylindrical graphitic structure1–5. Their mechanical properties have so far eluded direct measurement, however, because of the very small dimensions of nanotubes. Here we estimate the Young's modulus of isolated nanotubes by measuring, in the transmission electron microscope, the amplitude of their intrinsic thermal vibrations. We find that carbon nanotubes have exceptionally high Young's moduli, in the terapascal (TPa) range. Their high stiffness, coupled with their low density, implies that nanotubes might be useful as nanoscale fibres in strong, lightweight composite materials.

Choose virtually any characteristic of a material - electronic, structural, or optical - and the value associated with diamond will almost always be the most extreme: Diamond is invariably 'the biggest and the best'. The following is a table of the properties of diamond that render it so potentially useful across many fields of science (Ref. 'Synthetic Diamond - Emerging CVD Science and Technology', Spear and Dismukes, Wiley, NY, 1994).

When we started working on the project, we used a lot of cutting edge tools, especially in terms of 3-D modeling and the fabrication machinery used to execute this incredibly complex design. But since then, a funny thing has happened. What we thought was cutting edge has become the norm. However, when I tell this to people (even people in the steel industry), they initially look skeptical. They tell me steel is an old, mature, smoke-stack industry. But while steel has been the material of choice for construction for most of the past century, it doesn't mean it's not a modern industry with new technology (ranging from improvements in the properties of steel to better equipment and new communication and design tools). And fortunately, on September 19, you have a chance to see for yourself.

The combination of carbon or graphite fibers in a carbon or graphite matrix produces a material with unusual properties called a carbon-carbon composite. They are fabricated by multiple impregnation of porous "all carbon" frames or configurations which are then impregnated with a liquid carbonizable precursor (e.g., pitch) and pyrolyzed. Carbon-carbon composites can also be produced by chemical vapor deposition of pyrolytic carbon. The main advantages of carbon-carbon composites are their retention of useful properties up to 2760 °C (5000 °F). A foamed carbon-carbon composite has also been fabricated.
