Many homes and small workshops have single stage compressors capable of producing 7bar/100psi pressure for powering hand tools and filling truck tires. These simple compressors use the most basic engineering techniques and are successfully mass produced out in the Far East as a low cost consumer product. It comes as quite a surprise when a dive operation comes to purchase their first high pressure divers breathing air compressor to be met with a price tag approaching that of a family car, and the use of which is surrounded by a pile of legal regulations and maintenance obligations, and competent operator requirements which if not met, will cause several well known phenomena.

Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

Product Specifications: PSS Type A Seal Dimensions The Type A PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical face seal. The sealing surface is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front side of the bellows with hose clamps, and the back end of the bellows fits over the Stern tube and is secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is fitted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The stainless-steel rotor compresses the bellows before the rotor is secured to the shaft with set screws. This compression (pre-load) maintains constant contact between the two flat faces of the stainless-steel rotor and carbon flange, allowing the PSS to compensate for the variable fore and aft movement due to propeller thrust. In addition, the carbon flange is over-bored to the shaft diameter allowing it to “float” around the shaft and thus compensate for most misalignment and vibration problems. The stainless-steel rotor is sealed to the shaft by two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and stainless-steel rotor and do not experience wear during operation.

The heterogeneity in a composite material is introduced due to not only its bi-phase or in some cases multi-phase composition, but also laminations. This leads to a distinctly different stress strain behaviour in the case of laminates. The anisotropy caused due to fibre orientations and the resulting extension-shear and bending-twisting coupling as well as the extension-bending coupling developed due to unsymmetric lamination add to the complexities. A clear understanding of the constitutive equations of a composite laminate is thus desirable before these are used in analysis and design of composite structures. In this chapter, we first introduce to the readers the basic constitutive equations for a general three-dimensional anisotropic material with and without material symmetry, elastic constants and compliances and their relations to engineering constants, as well as transformation laws for elastic constants and compliances for both three and two-dimensional cases.

CARBON nanotubes are predicted to have interesting mechanical properties—in particular, high stiffness and axial strength—as a result of their seamless cylindrical graphitic structure1–5. Their mechanical properties have so far eluded direct measurement, however, because of the very small dimensions of nanotubes. Here we estimate the Young's modulus of isolated nanotubes by measuring, in the transmission electron microscope, the amplitude of their intrinsic thermal vibrations. We find that carbon nanotubes have exceptionally high Young's moduli, in the terapascal (TPa) range. Their high stiffness, coupled with their low density, implies that nanotubes might be useful as nanoscale fibres in strong, lightweight composite materials.

Supercars are usually associated with screaming engines that drink gas like there is no tomorrow. However, there is no dearth of customers who love to possess these beasts, as they are good at turning some heads on the streets. The recent demand to curb emissions and run vehicles on alternative fuels has made some automakers and designers think about next-generation supercars, which are silent, clean and run without gas. Here is a list 15 such concept vehicles that can change the face of supercars forever:

I have built this carbon composite MTB frame four years ago using simple building method which is described in this Instructable. Of course, this method is not suitable for mass production, but if you plan to build just one or two frames for yourself, it is sufficient and you can build your own frame of a high quality. The feeling of riding a self-made frame is great! After years of riding, the frame is still okay and I am still alive too, although I prefer riding my bike equipped by the bamboo/carbon frame, which I have built using the same method described here. Until now, several frames have been built by this method in the world.

Carbon fiber is an interesting material in that so many people want a bike made of the stuff, yet most people haven’t a clue as to how a carbon bike is actually made. It’s both odd and and yet completely sensible–carbon fiber frames (when carefully constructed) offer tremendous weight, strength and stiffness advantages and yet no material is so shrouded in mystery: consumers really haven’t been given much of a look behind the curtain, so to speak.

A) Geometry. I chose geometry that I knew I would like, based on bikes I've ridden. (For more information about how to choose frame geometry, see framebuild.htm.) This bike is a normal road bike: 59cm seat tube, 57cm top tube, average bottom bracket height, etc. To begin the full scale drawing, I plotted only the points required to hold the seat post, rear wheel, fork, etc. I did not draw any frame tubes yet. This bare bones geometry formed the skeleton. In the next section I describe how I fleshed it out. B) Shape. I designed a shape that is distinctive and appropriately proportioned for the loads I believe a bicycle experiences. I connected the dots from the geometry described above, thus fleshing out my skeleton. This is one of the parts I enjoyed the most: dreaming up all kinds of unusual shapes with which to make a bike. Trying to balance out the weight, strength, frontal area, looks, and doability is exciting to me. My bike is a beam bike, with the beam integrally made as part o

I probably should start my list with myself, of course! You can see thumbnail photos of my first composite frame while it was under construction, or read the long version (with sources). I'm currently making my second composite frame. Chris Root has been doing a little framebuilding. Getting information and sources for supplies can be difficult since it is a somewhat obscure thing. So if you're interested in getting started yourself, he's put some links at his web site so you don't have to do all kinds of searching. http://members.home.net/cjroot/framebuilding.html. Stephanie Monfrey's Framebuilding Website at http://www.geocities.com/smonfrey/index.html is an excellent summary of jigs and fixtures, tooling, tubing and lugs, and helpful resources on line.

Last year i made a carbon fibre violin, I started out by drawing a violin on paper, working out the curve heights, plotting the lot on paper. Once i had my plans drawn it was time to start making moulds, the violin plate moulds started as block of plaster, that i routed out and fine carved to produce a "plug", the 1st mould was taken off that, then fine finishing the top and bottom plate mould took about 1 month, and i still had a lot of fibreglass moulds to make, rib mould, neck mould, finger board mould, they all take time. To have a Shop Bot would be a huge help with the mould making, change the shape slightly on the CAD drawings, rerun CAM, and watch the Shop Bot produce its magic on HDPE ( only a dream ), using a Shop Bot to draw perf lines, and trim the carbon fibre, i wish i could afford one.

In this extended tutorial you can follow the process on how to make PREPREG carbonfiber parts. This is done with out of autoclave prepreg materials. This means you DONT NEED AN AUTOCLAVE. The first layer is resinrich, making it possible to get perfect parts out of your mould. The most important thing while doing Prepreg is keeping in mind that everything that goes into the oven needs to be resistent till those high temperatures. Thats why Iove made A 6-Part tutorial series on how to start with a part, make a splitmould, get the mould halfs ready for prepreg by postcuring them en finishing them with some polishing and waxing.
