http is a stateless protocol. A way to remember information from page to page is to use cookies. According to Wikipedia: A cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie, or browser cookie, is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while the user is browsing that website. Every time the user loads the website, the browser sends the cookie back to the server to notify the website of the user's previous activity. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information (such as items in a shopping cart) or to record the user's browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited by the user as far back as months or years ago). In this tutorial you will find information about creating and managing cookies with PHP or Javascript. Demo is available in each case.

Evercookie is a Javascript API that produces extremely persistent cookies in a browser. Its goal is to identify a client even after they've removed standard cookies, Flash cookies (Local Shared Objects or LSOs), and others. This is accomplished by storing the cookie data as many browser storage mechanisms as possible. If cookie data is removed from any of the storage mechanisms, evercookie aggressively re-creates it in each mechanism as long as one is still intact.

For years, many web developers have needed to store data on the client. Before the advent of HTML5 and its new mechanisms, every developer used cookies to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, working with cookies in JavaScript can cause a lot of headaches. This article discusses what cookies are, and how you can build functions to create, retrieve, and delete them.

Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities can be pretty dangerous. On web applications, they can lead to everything from breaches in privacy to complete account compromisation. One of the many ways that attackers can take advantage of XSS holes is by reading the information stored in the browser cookies and using it to impersonate a legitimate user. To the vulnerable site, there is usually no difference between the credentials provided by the real user and those provided by an attacker– so everything looks peachy on the surface.

A Firefox profile stores all of your important data, such as your bookmarks, history, cookies, and passwords. This article explains how to copy the files to a new profile, lists important files in the profile and describes what information is stored in these files. If you are having a problem with Firefox then sometimes, rather than trying to find and fix the exact cause of the problem, it is easier just to make a new Firefox profile and copy your most important data over to it. The Reset Firefox feature will do this for you automatically.

Each of the above methods may or may not work, depending on the user's browser version/settings and your site configuration. Here's why the above methods might not work. Note also that methods (1) and (2) won't work if you try to pass a parameter to a destination page on a different website. (For security reasons, unsigned scripts can share cookies and variables only if the scripts reside on the same website – same-origin policy.)

Most (if not all) modern websites use sessions to control the experience for individual users, and to maintain state between requests (since HTTP is a stateless protocol after all). Sessions are fantastic and incredibly useful, but if managed incorrectly they can expose your website to security vulnerabilities and potentially allow a malicious attacker to gain unauthorised access to user accounts.
