Each trainee skipper will be asked to skipper the yacht on a short passage. Your instructor will be on hand to give advice and encouragement and to ensure that your destination is reached safely. The essential element is that you experience being in charge and take the credit when all goes well, but also have responsibility when it doesn`t. The end of each day is usually spent around the chart table discussing the passages and gaining from each other`s experience. Day Skipper Practical is the normal follow on Practical course from Competent Crew, however the theory knowledge must be gained prior to attempting this practical course. The course will cover, preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualing, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making and night cruising.

This is a follow-up blog post that expands on the subject of highly available cluster, discussed in MariaDB MaxScale High Availability: Active-Standby Cluster. Replication Manager is a tool that manages MariaDB 10 clusters. It supports both interactive and automated failover of the master server. It verifies the integrity of the slave servers before promoting one of them as the replacement master and it also protects the slaves by automatically setting them into read-only mode. You can find more information on the replication-manager from the replication-manager GitHub repository. Using Replication Manager allows us to automate the replication failover. This reduces the amount of manual work required to adapt to changes in the cluster topology and makes for a more highly available database cluster. In this blog post, we'll cover the topic of backend database HA and we’ll use Replication Manager to create a complete HA solution. We build on the setup described in the earlier blog post and integrate Replication Manager into it. We're using Centos 7 as our OS and we'll use the 0.7.0-rc2 version of the replication-manager.

I’ve had a lot of success in my 20 year software engineering career with developing cross platform ‘C’ and ‘C++’ code. At Backblaze, we just released the Mac beta version of our online backup service, so I thought it an apt time to discuss my 10 rules for writing cross-platform code. We develop an online backup product where a small desktop component (running on either Windows or Macintosh) encrypts and then transmits users’ files across the internet to our datacenters (running Linux.) We use the same ‘C’ and ‘C++’ libraries on Windows, Mac, and Linux interchangeably. I estimate it slows down software development by about 5 percent overall to support all three platforms. However, I run into other developers or software managers who mistakenly think cross platform code is difficult, or might double or triple the development schedules. This misconception is based on their bad experiences with badly run porting efforts. So this article is to quickly outline the 10 simple rules I live by to achieve efficient cross platform code development.

The amendment and extension of the Mutual Defence Agreement, which was first signed in 1958, is fundamental to the replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system: allowing for the transfer of information relating to nuclear technology and US-UK collaboration over their nuclear weapons programmes. Yet the British Government has not only denied Parliament the opportunity to discuss it, it will not even disclose the content of the agreement.

Udev supplies a dynamic device directory containing only the nodes for devices which are connected to the system. It creates or removes the device node files in the /dev directory as they are plugged in or taken out. Dbus is like a system bus which is used for inter-process communication. The HAL gets information from the Udev service, when a device is attached to the system and it creates an XML representation of that device. It then notifies the corresponding desktop application like Nautilus through the Dbus and Nautilus will open the mounted device’s files.
