This is what we call a hillbilly water filter, using garbage and materials from the woods to make a water filter. This is certainly not ideal situation. However, it provides an alternative to drinking water with unknown origins. If it were spring/summer we would have used edible greens rather than sand and rocks, but still used the charcoal. Make sure to not use ashes in this setup.
