Forum topic about creating an oxygen concentrator to fill up oxygen bottles. A user asks: Is any one here is using or has used an oxygen concentrator. I do know you cannot get 100% pure oxygen. Basically it is a PSA oxygen concentrator that also has a compressor mounted to it that pumps direct to scuba tanks. It will also provide continuous flow for blending, but a concentrator that small doesn't put out enough for a big compressor. Several manufacturers have boosters designed for this application though. Invacare homefill, Rix microboost *yes this was actually designed around PSA oxygen concentrators*, Philips Ultrafill *only one that will go to 3000psi*, and a few others. I use one and fill 2200 psi O2 bottles to do PP blending nitrox. It's a invocare homefill set up. Makes perhaps 200+ cuft a day of 96% O2. 2 days to fill a standard 5' tall O2 bottle used for standard acetalyne rigs. These systems can be hard to get because they need a perscription to get one. but some will sell for hobby use. (glass works etc.) I think you can still get the concentrator and compuressor for about 1000 $ and then there is an adaptor hose that is needed to connect to fill tanks that may be 100 $ unless you hae one of hte designed carry around tanks to get the part from. There are other solutions of course. Keep the unit indoors or somewhere where it is dry and low humidity and the concentrator will last a long time. On the left is my excellent Preval vFan airbrush that Home Depot gave me to evaluate. You can see the hose has a standard 1/4″ male QD connector installed. On the right is a pressure regulator, with a standard female QD connector on the outlet side, and a scuba-to-NPT adapter on the inlet side. Plug that into an inflator hose on a scuba regulator, and set your output pressure on the inline regulator. A scuba regulator outputs about 140 psi, roughly the same as a compressor, while the airbrush wants 20-40 psi. The flow rate is more than adequate to drive the airbrush, and breathing air is already super-clean, so no filter necessary. A typical scuba tank holds 80-100 cuft at around 3000 psi, and costs well under $10 to refill at the dive shop. The vFan spec is 5 cfm at 20 psi, which works out to over 15 minutes of continual spraying, or several hours under real conditions. This could even drive a bigger spray gun for a useful amount of time, but I don’t think I will ever use it for anything but the airbrush, since Home Depot also gave me a nice compressor. It’s like Christmas every month.

Most enclosed boats will have some kind of water system on board, ranging from a single manual pump operated tap to a system featuring hot and cold water with mixer taps and showers. Marine plumbing can be a daunting subject but most pleasure craft designed for river use have surprisingly similar water systems and understanding the function of just a few key common components can really help to gain a good understanding of marine plumbing. Unlike domestic plumbing where water pressure is generally created by gravity, boats require an electric pump to generate water pressure as tanks are often level with or below the outlets they serve. The pump is therefore the heart of the system and works by cycling on and off to maintain the desired pressure and a good flow when you open a tap. Most pumps are switched on and off automatically via a pressure switch inside the pump, though some smaller pumps rely on micro switches within the taps themselves. Pumps do differ in the pressure they provide (usually in PSI) and the flow rate (usually in GPM or LPM). The size of your boat, the number of outlets the pump will serve and the complexity of the water system will dictate which pump you will need.
