CSSTidy is an opensource CSS parser and optimiser. It is available as executeable file (available for Windows, Linux and OSX) which can be controlled per command line and as PHP script (both with almost the same functionality).
In opposite to most other CSS parsers, no regular expressions are used and thus CSSTidy has full CSS2 support and a higher reliability.

JSMin is a filter which removes comments and unnecessary whitespace from JavaScript files. It typically reduces filesize by half, resulting in faster downloads. It also encourages a more expressive programming style because it eliminates the download cost of clean, literate self-documentation.

You may feel free to add a comment at the bottom of this post, something like "Um, DUH!" after reading this. It's funny how one gets lazy with their own website. What's the old joke, "those who can't, teach." I show folks how to optimize their websites all the time but never got around to optimizing my own. It's important (and useful!) to send as few bytes of CSS and JS and HTML markup down the wire as possible. It's not just about size, though, it's also about the number of requests to get the bits. In fact, that's often more of a problem then file size.

Recently I came across Aaron Hopkins' Optimizing Page Load Time article. It explains in depth how you should optimize your web pages for a faster browsing experience. It's full of brilliant theory, but not to so much about practical tips for the average blogger. So here is a list of 5 things you can do to optimize your web pages without having to redo your site design or set up distribution caches around the planet. It helped me to reduce load time of this web site by about 70% on average.

Webmaster Guidelines: Best practices to help Google find, crawl, and index your site. Following these guidelines will help Google find, index, and rank your site. Even if you choose not to implement any of these suggestions, we strongly encourage you to pay very close attention to the "Quality Guidelines," which outline some of the illicit practices that may lead to a site being removed entirely from the Google index or otherwise impacted by an algorithmic or manual spam action. If a site has been affected by a spam action, it may no longer show up in results on Google.com or on any of Google's partner sites.
