Emergency Backup: When all other local telecoms are down Satellite Phones can give you an emergency backup line. Unobstructed View of the Sky: Working slightly differently from mobile phones, satellite communications depend on having a clear line of sight to the satellite in the sky. They work most effectively when used outside, with as few obstructions (tall buildings, mountains, trees, etc.) as possible.

There is a stable source for the WIndows 7 installation media ISO to download your licensed version here. I would use 64-bit for 4gb or more RAM, 32-bit (x86) for 3gb or less RAM. You can slipstream the latest Updates into the installer ISO to save at least an hour's Updating after install using Update 7 installation media. However it may take an hour to do this so consider how much you want this.  Due to problems with Updates which have recently grown more serious, MS has also just released a rollup you can install or slipstream into media here: Simplifying updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 | Windows for IT Pros . Burn ISO to DVD or to USB flash stick (minimum size of 4GB required) using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool or alternatively to DVD using ImgBurn  at 4x speed, to flash stick using Rufus selecting UEFI for GPT for UEFI BIOS, or Legacy MBR for Legacy BIOS. For UEFI installs format flash stick with Option One of  UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows making sure the settings shown in picture don't jump around after adding the ISO. You have a UEFI install if Disk Management shows an EFI System partition on the hard drive, the BIOS shows UEFI settings and it's Boot menu offers to boot the DVD or a UEFI-formatted flash stick as an EFI device.

Residential Grid-Tied Solar with Battery Backup | Schneider Electric Solar

Saved by uncleflo on October 11th, 2019.

During grid outages PV Inverter production cannot occur, so a home with a PV inverter system installed will not have power during an outage. However for homes that have a PV Inverter system installed and are already selling power to the grid, it is still possible to retrofit backup power using ConextTM XW Pro, XW+ or SW inverter chargers. In a FIT program either ConextTM XW Pro, XW+ or SW is added behind PV inverter to provide backup, no change to PV inverter FIT wiring is required. However backup power is limited to the capacity of the battery bank and the solar system cannot be used to charge the batteries while the grid is down. In a NET metered program the ConextTM XW Pro or XW+ inverter charger is added in front of PV inverter to provide backup power. The PV inverter is rewired from the grid connection to critical load subpanel and AC Couple is on AC Output port.

Painless HA failover with MariaDB

https://opensolitude.com/2016/09/12/painless-high-availability-failover-mariadb.html

Saved by uncleflo on February 26th, 2018.

At work, we run a simple high-availability (HA) MariaDB setup that consists of an active master that handles all read and write queries from our applications, a passive master that can take over for the active master at any time, and a read-only replication slave (not shown) that we use for backups and analytics. Replication is configured so that the active master follows the passive master, the passive master follows the active master, and the analytics slave follows one of the masters. For the remainders of this post, I will refer to the active master as the master and the passive master as the standby. The benefits of this master-master configuration is that it allows us not only to failover from master to standby if the master becomes unhealthy, but also allows us to perform patching, reboots, lengthy migrations, and other kinds of database maintenance without impacting our users. Well, almost...

Brian’s 10 Rules for how to write cross-platform code

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/10-rules-for-how-to-write-cross-platform-code/

Saved by uncleflo on July 19th, 2016.

I’ve had a lot of success in my 20 year software engineering career with developing cross platform ‘C’ and ‘C++’ code. At Backblaze, we just released the Mac beta version of our online backup service, so I thought it an apt time to discuss my 10 rules for writing cross-platform code. We develop an online backup product where a small desktop component (running on either Windows or Macintosh) encrypts and then transmits users’ files across the internet to our datacenters (running Linux.) We use the same ‘C’ and ‘C++’ libraries on Windows, Mac, and Linux interchangeably. I estimate it slows down software development by about 5 percent overall to support all three platforms. However, I run into other developers or software managers who mistakenly think cross platform code is difficult, or might double or triple the development schedules. This misconception is based on their bad experiences with badly run porting efforts. So this article is to quickly outline the 10 simple rules I live by to achieve efficient cross platform code development.

In particular, every time I try to modify a certain contact evolution crashes, among other problems. Yes, I've reported the bug. So I thought I'd modify the database or xml file directly.

How to recover ext4 from GPT partitioned disk - Information Technology

http://howto.tipit.info/pc/linux/104/how-to-recover-ext4-from-gpt-partitioned-disk/

Saved by uncleflo on August 9th, 2014.

Hard drive sizes had increased dramatically in last several years, but block device drivers are still outdated. For hard drives more than 1TB currently seems to be an advantage to use GPT instead of legacy MBR partition table. You can see more details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table. One of the inevitable disadvantage of GPT is the possibility of corruption by using outdated partition editor like cfdisk, or other disk tools, even without any intention to modify the partition. It happened recently on one 1.5TB WD Caviar Green with GPT and one ext4 partition full of data.

Ddrescue - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)

http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html

Saved by uncleflo on August 9th, 2014.

GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying to rescue the good parts first in case of read errors. Ddrescuelog is a tool that manipulates ddrescue logfiles, shows logfile contents, converts logfiles to/from other formats, compares logfiles, tests rescue status, and can delete a logfile if the rescue is done. Ddrescuelog operations can be restricted to one or several parts of the logfile if the domain setting options are used. The basic operation of ddrescue is fully automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program, read the log, restart it from a new position, etc. If you use the logfile feature of ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently, (only the needed blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume it later at the same point.

extundelete: An ext3 and ext4 file undeletion utility

Saved by uncleflo on August 9th, 2014.

extundelete is a utility that can recover deleted files from an ext3 or ext4 partition. The ext3 and ext4 file systems are the most common default file systems in Linux distributions like Mint, Mageia, or Ubuntu. extundelete uses information stored in the partition's journal to attempt to recover a file that has been deleted from the partition. There is no guarantee that any particular file will be able to be undeleted, so always try to have a good backup system in place, or at least put one in place after recovering your files!

Saved by uncleflo on September 15th, 2013.

Marco Fioretti suggests some ways in Linux to automatically compare the contents of multiple directories in order to find missing, duplicate, or unwanted files. Many of us end up, inevitably, with so many files and folders that it is impossible to keep them under control without some specialized help. Luckily, as I'll show you in a moment, under Linux there are several, very efficient solutions to this problem. Multiple copies of many files, scattered all over the computer, waste space, create confusion, and slow down desktop indexers like DocFetcher. I have already explained how to find and remove the unwanted extra copies here.

This is a small follow up to my previous post on Setting up a KVM-LVM based virtual machine host, so if you haven't set up a KVM virtual machine host yet, you may want to read that post first. In the previous post I've described how to set up a very simple virtualised environment based on KVM. I also mentioned that I usually do part of the administration with the bundled GUI, virt-manager, and that I use command line tools for those administration tasks that aren't available in the GUI; in this post I'll mention some of the ones I happen to need most often.
