How many times have you heard that a sail gives lift to drive a boat because, "the air travels faster on the lee side for it has farther to go than it does on the windward side. So the pressures are different and you get lift." Well, that is wrong! Even a perfectly flat thin airfoil, with the same distance on both sides, has lift when it is at an angle to the wind.

Sandwich Core Materials are lightweight, structural layers that are embedded between laminate layers in order to build bulk and strength for a part—without adding significant weight. By employing sandwich core materials in your part or mold, you can achieve much higher flexural strength and flexural modulus than using skin laminates alone. Want to learn more about Sandwich Core? Visit the Learning Center and read our white paper, Guidelines for Sandwich Core Materials. All the Sandwich Core materials in this category are compatible with epoxy, vinyl ester, and polyester resins, and can be used for most lay-up techniques, including vacuum bagging and infusion.

The idea of converting human body heat into a form of usable energy has been targeted by scientists for years. A resting human male gives off roughly 100-120 Watts of energy. A very small fraction of this can be utilized by a thermoelectric device to power wearable devices. As an example, Seiko's Thermic Watch managed to capture continuous a charge at only one microwatt, so there is certainly a viable market that has not yet blossomed. It being known that 80% of a typical human's body power is given off as heat, current technologies can only produce a few milliwatts of energy. This is not nearly enough to charge your iPhone at a power input of roughly 5 watts, and unfortunately this sort of efficiency may never be possible.

Digital signatures are used world wide to verify the authenticity of messages and confirm that they have not been altered in transmission. The Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) is a Digital Signature Standard for the Federal Information Processing Standard and uses public key cryptography. The Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) is a version of DSA using elliptic curves. In this paper, I will introduce ECDSA and discuss its key generation, signing, and verifying procedures. Then, I will compare this algorithm to the RSA digital signature algorithm and discuss its various advantages and drawbacks. Finally, I will discuss the security of ECDSA and attacks that can break it.

This paper introduces a new cryptographic library, NaCl, and explains how the design and implementation of the library avoid various types of cryptographic disasters suffered by previous cryptographic libraries such as OpenSSL. Specifically, this paper analyzes the security impact of the following NaCl features: no data flow from secrets to load addresses; no data flow from secrets to branch conditions; no padding oracles; centralizing randomness; avoiding unnecessary randomness; extremely high speed; and cryptographic primitives chosen conservatively in light of the cryptanalytic literature.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are very efficient for distributing content. We want to use this potential to allow not only distribution but collaborative editing of this content. Existing collaborative editing systems are centralised or depend on the number of sites. Such systems cannot scale when deployed on P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a new model for building a collaborative editing system. This model is fully decentralised and does not depend on the number of sites.

The authors provide a brief overview of the classic tonal screech noise problem created by underexpanded supersonic jets, briefly describing the fluid dynamic-acoustics feedback mechanism that has been long established as the basis for this well-known aeroacoustics problem. This is followed by a description of the Long Penetration Mode (LPM) supersonic underexpanded counterflowing jet phenomenon which has been demonstrated in several wind tunnel tests and modeled in several computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The authors provide evidence from test and CFD analysis of LPM that indicates that acoustics feedback and fluid interaction seen in LPM are analogous to the aeroacoustics interactions seen in screech jets. Finally, the authors propose applying certain methodologies to LPM which have been developed and successfully demonstrated in the study of screech jets and mechanically induced excitation in fluid oscillators for decades. The authors conclude that the large body of work done on jet screech, other aeroacoustic phenomena, and fluid oscillators can have direct application to the study and applications of LPM counterflowing supersonic cold flow jets.

One of the most interesting domains of future Internet applications will be located in the area of electronic commerce, where online products and services are offered. Products of value are accounted by monetary transactions, involving a bank or credit card service to handle the electronic cash flow. To achieve a reliable and consistent flow of information in these applications, the concept of transactions has been proven to be the right choice.

When writing a ray tracer, sooner or later you’ll stumble on the problem of reflection and transmission. To visualize mirror-like objects, you need to reflect your viewing rays. To simulate a lens, you need refraction. While most people have heard of the law of reflection and Snell’s law, they often have difficulties with actually calculating the direction vectors of the reflected and refracted rays. In the following pages, exactly this problem will be addressed. As a bonus, some Fresnel equations will be added to the mix, so you can actually calculate how much light is reflected or transmitted (yes, it’s possible). At the end, you’ll have some usable formulas to use in your latest ray tracer.

Another concept is that of Chinese Walls, a security model that is also referred to as [the Brewer and Nash Model][8]. From their paper, the model can be described within a database organization as three intermittent levels. At the lowest level, we consider individual items of information, each concerning a single corporation. In keeping with BLP, we will refer to the files in which such information is stored as objects. At the intermediate level, we group all objects which concern the same corporation together into what we will call a company dataset. At the highest level, we group together all company datasets whose corporations are in competition. We will refer to each such group as a conflict of interest class.

International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks focuses on applied research and applications of sensor networks. A large number of important applications depend on sensor networks interfacing with the real world. These applications include medical, military, manufacturing, transportation, safety and environmental planning systems. Many have been difficult to realize because of problems involved with inputting data from sensors directly in to automated systems. Sensor fusion in the context of distributed sensor networks has emerged as the method of choice for resolving these problems.

In the development of distributed security sensor networks a large variety of prototype systems have been implemented and tested. However these systems tend to be developer specific and require substantial overhead in demonstrating more than one application. To bridge the gap between embedded, networked systems and desktop simulation environments, systems are necessary which are easily deployable and allow extended operation of distributed sensor networks, while allowing the flexibility to quickly test and evaluate a variety of operational algorithms. To enable fast optimization by leveraging the widest development community, open standards for such a portable development system are desired.

by Brad Arkin, Frank Hill, Scott Marks, Matt Schmid and Thomas John Walls. Originally appeared on Developer.com; September 1999. Poker is a card game that many people around the world enjoy. Poker is played at kitchen tables, in casinos, and cardrooms -- and more recently, the Web. A few of us here at Reliable Software Technologies play poker. Since many of us spend a good amount of our days online, it was only a matter of time before some of us put the two interests together. This is the story of how our interest in online poker and software security mixed to create a spectacular security exploit.
