If you've ever wished that the screen on your Android phone or tablet stayed on longer before going to sleep, you're not alone. Luckily, this can easily be adjusted in the settings with just a few taps. Not only that, you can prevent your Android device from sleeping while it's charging, too. The term 'screen timeout' refers to the time it takes for your smartphone or tablet to go to sleep (the screen turns off) after you've stopped interacting with it. The average screen timeout sits around 30 seconds to one minute, depending on your device. For many users, this is acceptable, but there are times that you might wish that your phone didn't go to sleep so quickly. Maybe you're looking at a recipe on your tablet in the kitchen, your hands are covered in food, and you need to get to the next step. Maybe you're reading a walkthrough for a video game and just want to glance over to see what to do next without pausing. Here's how you get your screen to stay on longer.

Most boaters have one very important thing in common. The safety of their boats often depends on it. Their own safety - sometimes their lives - may depend on it. This thing is used on an everyday basis and also during emergencies and in storms. But few of us give it much thought. Few of us have a clue about what makes it good, bad or indifferent, although we should insist that it be "good." This thing is the pier. I have a clue now. I thought I did before, but I learned a few things recently because my pier of 27 years began falling apart. I had been concerned about it for some time because wooden pilings, stringers and crossties don't last forever in water full of things that eat wood. But the pier was supposedly well built, and it seemed to be doing its job, so I left it alone. As a result, I learned some things about what we should look for when we call a marina to seek shelter in a storm, rent a slip for a season, buy a "dockominium" or even rent a slip overnight. Doing any of these things without giving some thought to whether the pier can do the job you need could cause you big trouble.

Whether you are a leisure or a professional sailor, you know how important it is to have a reliable power supply so that your electronics continue to function properly - especially far out at sea. Victron Energy offers a broad range of equipment designed specifically with you and your on board power system in mind. We proudly present to you a new era in freedom and independence. 'Service' batteries provide power for everything except for 'engine-starting'. Demand for on-board electricity has to be matched with an adequate battery bank. Lithium Batteries provide the best solution for high power demand. Compared to lead/acid technology they are smaller and about 70% lighter for their capacity. They can be deeply discharged, without harm. More current is available throughout the discharge cycle …and they can be cycled thousands of times - resulting in a much longer service life. It is also 'easier' to drive power back into Lithium batteries - so charging-time is reduced.

On a typical sailing boat with shaft drive, does the prop turn at engine rpm? Or is there a reduction? And when the prop freewheels while under sail, what would be a typical rpm? Presumably for a given boat speed (whether sail or power), the prop rpm will be less under sail than the rpm under power for the same boat speed, and presumably this ratio is closely linked to the propeller efficiency. I know on aeroplanes that prop efficiency is around 85% - is this a realistic figure for water-screws?

With microcontrollers and other Integrated Circuit (IC)’s getting smaller and smaller Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design gets more and more difficult. 2 layer PCB design is getting common for small companies and hobbyists but 4 layer or more is a bit daring for those used to 2 layers. When designing a circuit with a Ball Grid Array (BGA) that has 100 or more pins a 4 layer circuit board is necessary, but more layers can make designing easier. With prices of 4 layer boards getting lower it can be a better idea to route a board thats hard to do in 2 layers in 4 layers as it can save a lot of time. This document will explain the basics of routing PCBs with 4 or more layers with Cadsoft Eagle.

1) Mechanical - How is the film assembled?
a) Straight Cut: This is your basic cut. It's literally putting two clips side by side.
b) The Split Edit:
i) J-Cut: As you watch the first clip play, you begin to hear the audio from the next clip before you see its visuals.
ii) L-Cut: It's a J-cut in reverse. You're transitioning with Shot A's audio. This is used with dialogue scenes.
c) Jump Cut: Cut bits and pieces out of it, and put the fragments you want to include in your timeline back together. It'll look like the clip is "jumping" around through time.
d) Cutting on Action: To put it simply, "Cutting on Action" just means cutting in the middle of your subject's action.
2) Narrative - What does the cut say?
a) Match Cut: It matches the similar actions and content of both shots.
b) Contast Cut: Drawing a connection between two things. An example being cutting from a crown of shoppers to a herd of sheep.
c) Cross-Cutting: Also known as parallel editing, it is editing two different stories so they play side-by-side.
d) Cutaways: Also called an Insert Edit. These kinds of cuts are helpful if you want to add shots that give more information and context to a scene.
e) Montage: You know what montages are, right? The subject is all over the place and different cats, to show he did a lot of work for something specific.
f) The Transition: Any kind of mixing effect that merges clips together, like a fade or dissolve.

In this post I present the development model that I’ve introduced for some of my projects (both at work and private) about a year ago, and which has turned out to be very successful. I’ve been meaning to write about it for a while now, but I’ve never really found the time to do so thoroughly, until now. I won’t talk about any of the projects’ details, merely about the branching strategy and release management.

Philippe Dufour has been making watches by hand for 50 years but has no-one to pass his skills on to. He tells the BBC what it means to be one of the very few watchmakers remaining in the craft.

A mile offshore from San Benedicto, a volcanic island in the Eastern Pacific, and 75 feet deep, I raise my GoPro to take a selfie. I want to preserve this moment, not only because it’s the first dive of what promises to be a truly memorable adventure, but also because on my wrist is a very rare watch. I’m wearing a vintage Tornek-Rayville TR-900, a watch built by Blancpain for the United States Navy in the 1960s, and this is likely the only surviving one that has been fully serviced and suitably sealed for modern dive use. It’s a photo for bragging rights, or perhaps an epitaph, should I be the one to lose or flood such a rare horological treasure.

Philippe Dufour says that people come to him because he creates watches that cannot be found elsewhere. "I'm obliged to innovate" he says pragmatically. But do not feel sorry for him. The challenge to create the world's first double escapement wristwatch was seized gladly. The aim of the double escapement is to compensate for errors in the rate of the watch, produced by the effect of gravity on the regulating organs. In this sense, it challenges the existing champion, the tourbillon device, invented by Breguet in 1801. Philippe Dufour's double escapement has proved already to be effective. Compared with the tourbillon, it possesses the additional quality of retaining all its efficiency when reduced to the dimensions of a wristwatch. The key to the concept is a complex differential system, positioned, with the two escapement mechanisms, on the fourth wheel. The two balance wheels operate completely independently of each other. The differential system averages out the differences between them, and thus reduces the potential error in rate by half. The differential system alone, without the regulating organs, has twenty-one parts, twice as many as the tourbillon. And yet the entire assembly is only 30 mm in diameter, and 4 mm high. It fits neatly into a 34 mm watch. How may the Duality be recognised? This master of complications says that, aesthetically speaking, he likes simplicity. For the Duality this means a smooth, finely polished case in yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or platinum. A silvered dial carries Dauphine-style hands pointing to raised hour markers and Arabic numerals. A distinctive feature of the dial is the unusual placing of the small seconds-hand at half-past seven, reflecting the layout of the movement. The strap is in top quality, hand stitched crocodile leather.

The world’s first watch equipped with a mechanism for thermal power generation. The thermal power elements generate electricity from the temperature difference between the body and atmosphere and store it as energy in a secondary battery. A full charge keeps the watch running for about 10 months. The Thermic generates electric power via the Seebeck effect, a phenomenon produced when heat transfers from the back of the case to the case surface. To improve energy efficiency further, a power-saving mechanism stops the second hand whenever the watch is removed from the wrist.
