UnCommon Core: The Causes and Consequences of the Ukraine Crisis. John J. Mearsheimer, the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor in Political Science and Co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, assesses the causes of the present Ukraine crisis, the best way to end it, and its consequences for all of the main actors. A key assumption is that in order to come up with the optimum plan for ending the crisis, it is essential to know what caused the crisis. Regarding the all-important question of causes, the key issue is whether Russia or the West bears primary responsibility. Since its founding in 1890, the University of Chicago has been a destination for rigorous inquiry and field-defining research. This transformative academic experience empowers students and scholars to challenge conventional thinking in pursuit of original ideas.

Technical Analysis for Traders. The trader extension is a free open source stock library based on TA-Lib. It's dedicated to trading software developers requiring to perform technical analysis of financial market data. Alongside many indicators like ADX, MACD, RSI, Stochastic, TRIX the candlestick pattern recognition and several vector arithmetic and algebraic functions are present. Calculations can be done in two modes - TA-Lib and Metastock. Changing it using trader_set_compat() will affect the way some trader functions work. Some trader functions provide different results depending of the "starting point" of the data being involved. This is often referred as a function having memories. An example of such function is the Exponential Moving Average. It is possible to control the unstable period (the amount of data to strip off) using trader_set_unstable_period() function. Extended documentation about indicators, formulas and implementations in other programming languages can be found under » tadoc.org.

A Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is a compact sequence of characters that identifies an abstract or physical resource. This specification defines the generic URI syntax and a process for resolving URI references that might be in relative form, along with guidelines and security considerations for the use of URIs on the Internet. The URI syntax defines a grammar that is a superset of all valid URIs, allowing an implementation to parse the common components of a URI reference without knowing the scheme-specific requirements of every possible identifier. This specification does not define a generative grammar for URIs; that task is performed by the individual specifications of each URI scheme.

Youtube video quality and bitrate… What kind of compression does YouTube use? Every time we post a video on Youtube will ALWAYS recompressed. Youtube DO NOT leaves intact the video posted. YouTube, and a few of the other video services, also automatically deliver different video codecs to different platforms like iOS or Windows. Youtube recommends sending videos with high bitrates but after several tests I have verified that it does not change the quality beyond a certain bitrate, it is more important the quality of the source of acquisition rather than the bitrate. How much does Youtube compress video sent? How much the bitrate is allocated to video based on resolutions, youtube will assign a different bitrate to each resolution, and use 2 types of CODEC (H264 and VP9)

In 2000, the International Standards Organization adopted ISO Standard 12233: Photography -- Electronic still-picture cameras - Resolution measurements for the measurement of camera resolution. This standard is protected by copyright, but the design of the associated test chart seems not to be protected; its description has been available on the Web in an Excel spreadsheet. I have semi-manually converted this to an Adobe Illustrator file which is displayed here. In 2014 and again in 2017, the ISO revised the standard and the chart below was replaced by several new ones. Those new charts are not available here. In principle, you should be able to print this chart and perform resolution tests on your camera. The reality isn't that simple; there are lots of subtleties having to do with focus distance, quality and contrast of your printer, evenness of illumination, surface reflections, etc.

This chart does not work with the highly automated Imatest eSFR ISO module, described below. For highly automated measurements (including squares near the corners, color patches, and wedges) we recommend one of the Imatest eSFR ISO charts shown below. These charts are fully compliant with ISO 12233:2017. Supported by the Imatest Star Chart module. As an entrepreneur, one of the most important tasks you can perform is getting your idea(s) out from your head into a tangible format so that you can communicate that with others. In the past, this usually meant a well-researched business plan, that would usually take weeks (more like months) to create. I turn to the Lean Canvas to help me quickly formulate possible business models, product launches, campaigns and variations of, and communicate this with my stakeholders for my Lead Flow Method work. Having the Lean Canvas as a visual guide made this part “communicating the model/idea” so much more effective — and I think the most valuable function of the tool. The problem with business plans for startups & entrepreneurs are that they’re a waste of time, don’t get me wrong a well-researched business plan is important but only at the right stage of your business (usually when you’re in growth/investment). This quote from Steve Blank sums up this point in case: “Business Plan: a document investors make you write, that they don’t read”. The key fundamental to Lean methodology is the elimination of waste — this includes time, processes, inventory and more. So as a lean startup you need a quicker way to get ideas out of your head, you need to stay lean & avoid waste — so, it’s time to introduce Lean Canvas.

There are many tools in the developer’s toolbox when it comes to automatic data extraction. A good example is TF-IDF algorithm (Term Frequency – Inverse Document Frequency) which helps the system understand the importance of keywords extracted using OCR. Here’s how TF-IDF can be used for invoice and receipt recognition. In this article we focus on other techniques in order to make this text file “understandable” to a computer. For this purpose, we must delve into the world of NLP or Natural Language Processing. We will focus mainly on how we can transform our file of raw text into a format that will easily be understandable by our algorithm. In a nutshell, TF-IDF is a technique for understanding how important a word is in a document which is often used as a weighting factor for numerous use cases. TF-IDF takes under consideration how frequent a word appears in a single document in relation to how frequent that word is in general. Search engines can use TF-IDF to determine which results are the most relevant for a search query.

In the previous chapter, we explored in depth what we mean by the tidy text format and showed how this format can be used to approach questions about word frequency. This allowed us to analyze which words are used most frequently in documents and to compare documents, but now let’s investigate a different topic. Let’s address the topic of opinion mining or sentiment analysis. When human readers approach a text, we use our understanding of the emotional intent of words to infer whether a section of text is positive or negative, or perhaps characterized by some other more nuanced emotion like surprise or disgust. We can use the tools of text mining to approach the emotional content of text programmatically, as shown in Figure 2.1.

A central question in text mining and natural language processing is how to quantify what a document is about. Can we do this by looking at the words that make up the document? One measure of how important a word may be is its term frequency (tf), how frequently a word occurs in a document. There are words in a document, however, that occur many times but may not be important; in English, these are probably words like “the”, “is”, “of”, and so forth. We might take the approach of adding words like these to a list of stop words and removing them before analysis, but it is possible that some of these words might be more important in some documents than others. A list of stop words is not a sophisticated approach to adjusting term frequency for commonly used words. Another approach is to look at a term’s inverse document frequency (idf), which decreases the weight for commonly used words and increases the weight for words that are not used very much in a collection of documents. This can be combined with term frequency to calculate a term’s tf-idf, the frequency of a term adjusted for how rarely it is used. It is intended to measure how important a word is to a document in a collection (or corpus) of documents. It is a rule-of-thumb or heuristic quantity; while it has proved useful in text mining, search engines, etc., its theoretical foundations are considered less than firm by information theory experts.

This tool provides an efficient implementation of the continuous bag-of-words and skip-gram architectures for computing vector representations of words. These representations can be subsequently used in many natural language processing applications and for further research. The word2vec tool takes a text corpus as input and produces the word vectors as output. It first constructs a vocabulary from the training text data and then learns vector representation of words. The resulting word vector file can be used as features in many natural language processing and machine learning applications. A simple way to investigate the learned representations is to find the closest words for a user-specified word. The distance tool serves that purpose. For example, if you enter 'france', distance will display the most similar words and their distances to 'france', which should look like:

If I ask you “Do you remember the article about electrons in NY Times?” there’s a better chance you will remember it than if I asked you “Do you remember the article about electrons in the Physics books?”. Here’s why: an article about electrons in NY Times is far less common than in a collection of physics books. It is less likely to stumble upon the “electron” concept in NY Times than in a physics book. Let’s consider now the scenario of a single article. Suppose you read an article and you’re asked to rank the concepts found in the article by importance. The chances are you’ll basically order the concepts by frequency. The reason is simply that important stuff would be mentioned repeatedly because the narrative gravitates around them. Combining the 2 insights, given a term, a document and a collection of documents we can loosely say that:importance ~ appearances(term, document) / count(documents containing term in collection).

The EXPLAIN statement provides information about how MySQL executes statements. EXPLAIN works with SELECT, DELETE, INSERT, REPLACE, and UPDATE statements. EXPLAIN returns a row of information for each table used in the SELECT statement. It lists the tables in the output in the order that MySQL would read them while processing the statement. MySQL resolves all joins using a nested-loop join method. This means that MySQL reads a row from the first table, and then finds a matching row in the second table, the third table, and so on. When all tables are processed, MySQL outputs the selected columns and backtracks through the table list until a table is found for which there are more matching rows. The next row is read from this table and the process continues with the next table.
