I'm installing gitolite from CentOS packages for my client. The package creates a gitolite user, which will be visible explicitly during a "git clone" operations. The client wants to use "git" and not "gitolite", in case we change to something more fancy later. I'm not very familiar with CentOS, so I don't want to try to build the package myself from source.

After seeing a presentation from Linus Torvalds I decided to read more about git. After looking into git more a I have decided to slowly move to git. New projects will be using git instead of subversion and I will move some existing projects over to git when I get the chance.

I am looking for installing a git server to share projects with my team. I don't want to create a user account on the server with SSH access for each developer that needs a git access. It seems there is two concurrent solutions that cover this issue : gitosis & gitolite. I could not find any comparison between both solutions. What are the main differences between them? Are there other similar solution?

In this post I will walk you through how to setup your own gitolite server and start hosting your own git repositories. Gitolite is a great tool for doing this and works in a very git-like way for managing users, access-rights and setting up new repositories for collaboration between your team. A common reason to setup Gitolite is to remove reliance on services like GitHub.

I initially wrote this because someone on #git said "people always assume the official documentation is crap; that's why they look for tutorials". But a better reason is that gitolite comes with an enormous amount of documentation, (just the master TOC/index has more than 300 entries!) so the sheer size can be overwhelming for a rank newbie. Also, a lot of people start using gitolite before they have acquired enough knowledge of git, which makes things worse. My tutorial uses words and phrases borrowed from the official gitolite documentation, so don't be surprised if it sounds similar in places!

Git is the most hyped version control system at the moment and has been for some time now, but there is a reason for that. It’s fast, flexible, distributed (no network required), can communicate with Subversion, supports best development practices and the list goes on. We recommend using Git. This guide shows how to install and setup a Git Repository Server using Gitolite on Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 Server and how to access the Server from a Linux client.
