Speak to an AI using our low-latency open-source speech-to-text and text-to-speech. This is a cascaded system made by Kyutai: our speech-to-text transcribes what you say, an LLM (we use GPT OSS 120B) generates the text of the response, and we then use our text-to-speech model to say it out loud. All of the components are open-source: Kyutai STT, Kyutai TTS 1.6B, and Unmute itself. Although cascaded systems lose valuable information like emotion, irony, etc., they provide unmatched modularity: since the three parts are separate, you can Unmute any LLM you want without any finetuning or adaptation! In this demo, you can get a feel for this versatility by tuning the system prompt of the LLM to handcraft the personality of your digital interlocutor, and independently changing the voice of the TTS. Both the speech-to-text and text-to-speech models are optimized for low latency. The STT model is streaming and integrates semantic voice activity detection instead of relying on an external model. The TTS is streaming both in audio and in text, meaning it can start speaking before the entire LLM response is generated. You can use a 10-second voice sample to determine the TTS's voice and intonation. Check out the pre-print for details.

I have two *.sql files that I use when creating a new web site database. The first file creates all the tables. The second file populates some default records. I would like to execute these files from PHP. I also use the Zend_Framework, if that will help accomplish this? Answer: This question comes up from time to time. There's no good solution for running a .sql script directly from PHP. There are edge cases where statements common in a .sql script can't be executed as SQL statements. For example, the mysql tool has builtin commands that are not recognized by the MySQL Server, e.g. CONNECT, USE, and DELIMITER.

I’ve had a lot of success in my 20 year software engineering career with developing cross platform ‘C’ and ‘C++’ code. At Backblaze, we just released the Mac beta version of our online backup service, so I thought it an apt time to discuss my 10 rules for writing cross-platform code. We develop an online backup product where a small desktop component (running on either Windows or Macintosh) encrypts and then transmits users’ files across the internet to our datacenters (running Linux.) We use the same ‘C’ and ‘C++’ libraries on Windows, Mac, and Linux interchangeably. I estimate it slows down software development by about 5 percent overall to support all three platforms. However, I run into other developers or software managers who mistakenly think cross platform code is difficult, or might double or triple the development schedules. This misconception is based on their bad experiences with badly run porting efforts. So this article is to quickly outline the 10 simple rules I live by to achieve efficient cross platform code development.
