Font pairing is an essential aspect of web design. Learn how to pair fonts, and which fonts to use to make sure your users have the best experience. As a web designer, you have a lot of big decisions to make for each website you build. Color palettes, UI interactions, navigation layout, choosing the best font for your website, and much, much more. One area of web design that you might not be spending enough time thinking about, however, is font combinations. Choosing one great-looking font is one thing. Once you have a good sense of the voice and style of the brand, it becomes much easier to identify fonts that convey a similar vibe.

We have all heard of the golden mean (also known as the golden ratio or golden section): the self-replicating page with a proportion of 1:1.618 that is said to be found in everything from the design of ancient Greek architecture to the growth patterns of plants. This and other meaningful ratios rooted in geometry, music, nature, and history can be expressed as modular scales and put to work on the web. A modular scale is a sequence of numbers that relate to one another in a meaningful way. Using the golden ratio, for example, we can produce values for a modular scale by multiplying by 1.618 to arrive at the next highest number, or dividing by 1.618 to arrive at the next number down.

Right now, there’s a mathematical symphony happening on your website. Every single one of your readers is subconsciously aware of this symphony, and more important, they are all pre-programmed to respond to it in a particular way. The question is this: Is your site’s symphony pleasing and inviting to your readers, or does it turn them off and make it harder to communicate with them?

There are so many different design decisions that you can make when creating a logo that – at first – it can be a little overwhelming. Do you want something attention grabbing, colourful and brash? Do you follow the long shadow trend, or will that appear tired and overused in 6 months time? Do you go for something understated and that looks good in black and white? There are countless directions that you can go in, but my personal favourite is a logo that’s simple, clean and has a tiny hint of the brand’s personality behind it.

There are over 600 Google web fonts to choose from which is a good and bad thing – the good being there are so many good ones to choose from, the bad being having to sift through them to find the perfect one. When you’re running large scale sites that get hundreds of thousands of visitors a month, paid services like Typekit just aren’t worth the money. You’re much better off saving thousands of dollars by using Google web fonts. Honestly, around 60% of Google web fonts are just downright rubbish (sorry to hurt anyone’s feelings!), so I wanted to create this post showing the best fonts I’ve come across. These are fonts I’ve used myself in projects and themes and recommend to any web designers. I may have missed some other brilliant fonts, so do mention any other great ones in the comments.
