Diesel engines need no electric supply to keep going, and usually have ample power to drive a substantial bilge pump as well as propelling the boat.Usually, there is no need to run the bilge pump continuously, so the pump is driven via an integral clutch, which allows the pulley on the pump to rotate without turning the pump itself. Fitted with a manual clutch, the pump is engaged by an attached lever. With an electromagnetic clutch using the boat's 12 or 24 volt D.C. electric supply, the pump can be operated remotely, usually from the helm. JABSCO manual and electromagnetic clutch pumps are powerful engine-driven units. These tough and fully-serviceable belt-driven pumps will self-prime rapidly and work continuously over a wide engine speed range. Product Specifications: PSS Type A Seal Dimensions The Type A PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical face seal. The sealing surface is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front side of the bellows with hose clamps, and the back end of the bellows fits over the Stern tube and is secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is fitted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The stainless-steel rotor compresses the bellows before the rotor is secured to the shaft with set screws. This compression (pre-load) maintains constant contact between the two flat faces of the stainless-steel rotor and carbon flange, allowing the PSS to compensate for the variable fore and aft movement due to propeller thrust. In addition, the carbon flange is over-bored to the shaft diameter allowing it to “float” around the shaft and thus compensate for most misalignment and vibration problems. The stainless-steel rotor is sealed to the shaft by two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and stainless-steel rotor and do not experience wear during operation.

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Being the good citizen I am, I left-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in my taskbar, and select my USB drive to dismount. Then I get the message: Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. Of course, being the Operating System, it knows exactly what applications are using my device. So why won't it tell me? Or is there a way that I can find out?

On a typical sailing boat with shaft drive, does the prop turn at engine rpm? Or is there a reduction? And when the prop freewheels while under sail, what would be a typical rpm? Presumably for a given boat speed (whether sail or power), the prop rpm will be less under sail than the rpm under power for the same boat speed, and presumably this ratio is closely linked to the propeller efficiency. I know on aeroplanes that prop efficiency is around 85% - is this a realistic figure for water-screws?
