3D models are crucial components of digital production whether we talk about animation, gaming, architecture, industrial design or 3D printing industry. With a minimum of fuss, you can realize your creative ideas if you have the right 3D modeling software. From time to time, the beginners and home users find it difficult to turn the ideas into 3D prototypes and models as most 3D modeling programs are expensive and complicated to learn. People don’t prefer spending hundreds of dollars on software that are for small projects or occasional use. Often beginners don’t have the time and training essential to master the 3D modeling software. Many 3D modeling programs are accessible for beginners to change their ideas into a model. If these models are free, then it will be great for beginners. In this article, you will get acquainted with the best open source 3D modeling software that is free to use. But before that let’s discuss what 3D modeling software is and understand critical factors that will help you choose the best 3D modeling software.

Thermwood recently printed several sections from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold to demonstrate how only a single mold may be needed for the manufacture of larger vessels, such as yachts. The printed sections of this test mold are made of carbon fiber reinforced ABS from Techmer PM. ABS was chosen because of its physical properties and relatively low cost compared to other reinforced thermoplastics. Thermwood has already 3D printed a full size pleasure boat master pattern which has been used to produce multiple production boat hull molds. While this demonstrated the value of additive manufacturing small boat tooling, much larger vessels, yachts for example, require a different approach. In these instances, since only a single mold is needed, it is desirable to print the mold itself rather than print a plug or pattern from which multiple production molds can be made. To demonstrate to the industry how this might work, Thermwood printed a 10 foot section from a 51 foot long yacht hull mold. This rather unique mold design was specifically developed for additive manufacturing. It is printed in sections, each about five foot tall. These printed sections are then bound together both chemically and mechanically using high strength polymer cables into two mold halves. The two mold halves then bolt together to form a complete female mold for the yacht hull.

The iro3d printer is an affordable metal 3D printer by iro3d, a manufacturer based in the United States. This desktop metal 3D printer uses Selective Powder Deposition technology to 3D print metal. The iro3d selectively deposits sand and metal powder inside a crucible. The sand acts as support material. The fine materials are used for the visible, outer parts of the 3D printed objects, while the rougher materials are deposited for the infill. Once the 3D printing process is complete, the user must take the crucible to bake it in a kiln for two to three hours. This affordable desktop metal 3D printer is available starting from $8,000. You could call it one giant leap for 3D printing. California’s Rocket Lab just completed its 100th additive-printed Rutherford Engine as it targets cheaper rocket launches and space missions. The company has been on a tear since it created the world’s first 3D-printed, electric turbo-pump fed engine in 2013. Since then, it's launched 70 Rutherford engines to space with various companies—with the most recent one being on June 29. “The Rutherford engine has played an integral part in enabling Rocket Lab to make frequent and reliable launch a reality for small satellites,” Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said in a statement. “It’s a testament to our innovative design and manufacturing teams that we’ve achieved everything we set out to do in just a few short years; an entirely new type of rocket engine that delivers unmatched performance, boasts a proven record of 100% launch reliability and can be manufactured quickly and efficiently.” From here, the production is going to step up. The company plans to produce 200 Rutherford engines in the next year, on the back of improved 3D printing facilities in Huntington Beach, California. These engines will launch from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, and Launch Complex 2 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops Island, Virginia.

An essential part of my work is the occupation with spatial situations within physical space and digital media. I concern myself with terms of interdisciplinary art and experimental space. My knowledge is based on research of perception and narration in space. I work on projects both individually and in groups. Either architecture itself is the focus or the interaction with people is central. Subjects of public space, migration, temporary use and fictional space are negotiated. A humorous view and a technical approach about the interplay of humans, their perception and architecture results in different forms of expression: installation, photography, documentary time-lapse, 3D-print and modular construction. I am a member of the ‘Oberösterreichischer Kunstverein’, chairman of ‘Offene Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst’ and part of the collective ‘Salon Franziska’.

This mechanism uses rotary motion to move a gear quickly and precisely into a fixed position. Using skateboard bearings, you can snap these parts together and use the action for all kinds of useful (or useless) machines. Using gears that have teeth and smooth gaps, you can make a gear spin and stop at just about any angle you want. This is similar to a geneva gear, but it's much simpler to 3D model and (I think) a bit easier to understand. This is the first in a series of 3D printed mechanisms modeled in Fusion 360 using skateboard bearings and 3D printed parts. The idea is that you'll be able to use the mechanisms to make all kinds of projects that use mechanical assemblies like robots or any other machine you might want to make.

With microcontrollers and other Integrated Circuit (IC)’s getting smaller and smaller Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design gets more and more difficult. 2 layer PCB design is getting common for small companies and hobbyists but 4 layer or more is a bit daring for those used to 2 layers. When designing a circuit with a Ball Grid Array (BGA) that has 100 or more pins a 4 layer circuit board is necessary, but more layers can make designing easier. With prices of 4 layer boards getting lower it can be a better idea to route a board thats hard to do in 2 layers in 4 layers as it can save a lot of time. This document will explain the basics of routing PCBs with 4 or more layers with Cadsoft Eagle.

In 2000, the International Standards Organization adopted ISO Standard 12233: Photography -- Electronic still-picture cameras - Resolution measurements for the measurement of camera resolution. This standard is protected by copyright, but the design of the associated test chart seems not to be protected; its description has been available on the Web in an Excel spreadsheet. I have semi-manually converted this to an Adobe Illustrator file which is displayed here. In 2014 and again in 2017, the ISO revised the standard and the chart below was replaced by several new ones. Those new charts are not available here. In principle, you should be able to print this chart and perform resolution tests on your camera. The reality isn't that simple; there are lots of subtleties having to do with focus distance, quality and contrast of your printer, evenness of illumination, surface reflections, etc.

The unit below overheated 16 minutes into the shoot. It is using UVC Blender and a USB cable during an indoor shoot at Stanford during a crowded VR event. If the THETA is overheating, point a standard household fan at it. The airflow may be enough to cool the outside of the THETA and help with the internal overheating. People have reported success by sticking $6 Raspberry Pi heatsinks onto the body of the THETA or taping or attaching a small fan used for computer CPUs to the outside of the THETA. 6 piece Addicore heatsink for Raspberry Pi for $5.95; Mudder 8 piece black heatsink cooler for RPi for $6.99; TinkerCad Fan Holder for 3D printing.

Over the past two years or so, a very exciting race has been ongoing in the construction world: Who can be the first to develop a commercially viable concrete 3D printer capable of making homes? And the competition has been very tough, as interesting and promising projects quickly began popping up all over the place. Just a few months ago, even Dubai stepped into the race with an ambitious plan, and just this week Italian manufacturers WASP announced the creation of the world’s largest Delta 3D printer with an eye on concrete construction. But today, another team has jumped to the head of the pack, as the innovation-minded Lewis Grand Hotel in the Philippines, owned by entrepreneur Lewis Yakich, has begun work on a massive 3D printed expansion of the hotel. What’s more, they are already planning to follow this up with a series of 3D printed commercial homes. Do we have a winner?
