You could call it one giant leap for 3D printing. California’s Rocket Lab just completed its 100th additive-printed Rutherford Engine as it targets cheaper rocket launches and space missions. The company has been on a tear since it created the world’s first 3D-printed, electric turbo-pump fed engine in 2013. Since then, it's launched 70 Rutherford engines to space with various companies—with the most recent one being on June 29. “The Rutherford engine has played an integral part in enabling Rocket Lab to make frequent and reliable launch a reality for small satellites,” Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said in a statement. “It’s a testament to our innovative design and manufacturing teams that we’ve achieved everything we set out to do in just a few short years; an entirely new type of rocket engine that delivers unmatched performance, boasts a proven record of 100% launch reliability and can be manufactured quickly and efficiently.” From here, the production is going to step up. The company plans to produce 200 Rutherford engines in the next year, on the back of improved 3D printing facilities in Huntington Beach, California. These engines will launch from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, and Launch Complex 2 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops Island, Virginia.

The nuclear industry of the 1950s was defined by an inexhaustible optimism and rigorous scientific thinking. Anything was possible, and nuclear energy promised to power the world. Revolutionary designs were prolific. Today, however, this technological diversity has been narrowed, and the industry has become locked into one design: the light water reactor. We’re challenging this strategy and have returned to the beginning to explore another path, and another design – the molten salt reactor. This simple reactor design, updated with modern technology and materials, has the potential to revolutionize the nuclear industry.

Your Lock Lab for exploring different ways to overcome security devices, with a focus on locks. The techniques we'll look at include both non-destructive (picking, bypassing, etc.) as well as a few destructive methods. Our objective is to have a little fun while gaining a rapid entry. We'll also look at how different devices work, identify their design weaknesses, exploit them, and generally break a lot of shit.

Paul Furgale is the Deputy Director of the Autonomous Systems Lab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). His current research is focused on long-term autonomy for mobile robotic systems, including perception, mapping, localization, and planning over long timescales and in highly dynamic environments. He is the scientific coordinator for V-Charge, a European project and industry/academic collaboration that seeks to develop automated valet parking and charging of electric vehicles in mixed traffic. He received a PhD (2011) from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) where he developed algorithms to support over-the-horizon sample return for planetary exploration rovers as part of the Autonomous Space Robotics Lab. His PhD work was field tested in the Canadian High Arctic and subsequently integrated into several Canadian Space Agency rover prototypes.
