I realise when I first released this post, it was January, a time of year that not everyone is throwing themselves into water without a wetsuit. A lot of you have been asking about sustainable swimwear options again over the past month with this never-ending heatwave we are having, so I thought I’d update and repost this guide. With environmental issues becoming much more prominent in the mainstream media, a quick google into the textiles and fashion industries will provide you with endless reasons to choose slow fashion. If you didn't follow Fashion Revolution and the #whomademyclothes movement go and check it out, alongside the documentary The True Cost. The price is often more because these companies pay workers a fair living wage, and source sustainably grown and produced materials. I've been trying to buy everything I wear consciously and not fall into the consumerism trap too often (although I'm occasionally slip up and find myself on the high street, damn those glittery topshop dinosaur socks). I try to follow the guide lines:

Some People Can be Creative. But Others Find Producing Creative Work Daunting. It is one thing to find original, creative product suitable for giving as gifts; it is quite another thing to find an affordable range of creative product. There are many reasons to give gifts. Family, friends and loved ones are usually the recipients at such special times as birthdays and Christmas. Business people are also looking for that something ‘special’ to reward a good client or to make an impression on someone of influence. They are certainly not looking for mass produced items for these types of gifts. But regardless of how important the recipient may be to them, they still want the item to be affordable, not only for their own benefit, but because they do not want to embarrass the recipient either.

By reporting your own positions, MarineTraffic will be able to display your vessel on the Live Map. Visibility: Real-time vessel positions displayed on the MarineTraffic Live Map are extremely useful to a wide spectrum of users closely-related to the shipping industry one way or the other. To name a few, ship owners, agents, pilots, tug operators, port authorities, crews' families and friends, passengers, cargo handlers or recipients, brokers, leisure boaters, sailing racers, ship chandlers, bunkering companies, yacht charterers or brokers may have a reason to monitor the positions of your vessel. The list of interested parties is unlimited while the numbers speak for themselves; the visibility of the MarineTraffic website is such that the number of visitors per day well exceeds the half a million mark! Safety: Although MarineTraffic is not intended to be used as a safety tool, there are many cases where making your position widely known could enhance your safety at sea. Making your position known to the public may be complementary to the official means of distress reporting (such as EPIRB or DSC radio) and may help in Search & Rescue (SAR) procedures where the position of the vessel cannot be acquired by other means. Historical data: MarineTraffic stores historical data in its database. Historical data regarding the past movements of your vessel could be accessed for many reasons; such as just for fun or recollection, for statistical reasons, for analyzing tracks in comparison to weather conditions, for accident investigation etc. Consider it as an online log of yours!

Michelangelo, Pietà, marble, 1498-1500 (Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome) Speakers: Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker. The Pietà was a popular subject among northern european artists. It means Pity or Compassion, and represents Mary sorrowfully contemplating the dead body of her son which she holds on her lap. This sculpture was commissioned by a French Cardinal living in Rome. Look closely and see how Michelangelo made marble seem like flesh, and look at those complicated folds of drapery. It is important here to remember how sculpture is made. It was a messy, rather loud process (which is one of the reasons that Leonardo claimed that painting was superior to sculpture!). Just like painters often mixed their own paint, Michelangelo forged many of his own tools, and often participated in the quarrying of his marble -- a dangerous job. When we look at the extraordinary representation of the human body here we remember that Michelangelo, like Leonardo before him, had dissected cadavers to understand how the body worked. - Created by Beth Harris and Steven Zucker.

Well, first rule – you should not do this. But if there is good reason, consider using such query for searching in index-based arrays: SELECT * FROM table WHERE your_field_here REGEXP '.*;s:[0-9]+:"your_value_here".*' In case you have assoc array serialized you can use: SELECT * FROM table WHERE your_field_here REGEXP '.*"array_key_here";s:[0-9]+:"your_value_here".*' Of course it won’t be very fast but in small tables should be enough

When we talk about bias, we often tie it to acts of discrimination or prejudice. But according to cognitive science, everybody, by virtue of having a brain that’s constantly seeking efficiency, is biased in some way — and not all biases make us actively malicious. The key is how we manage our biases. While biases can affect any of an organization’s talent decisions, they can be especially harmful when it comes to diversity and inclusion efforts. And there is perhaps no setting that shapes careers, salaries, and lives like annual performance evaluations. In a recent performance management summit we ran with over 100 large organizations, 57% of them said they weren’t taking any actions to address bias in performance reviews. One reason why may be a lack of shared language: In order to address biases, you first have to be able to label them. Research has found that several biases come up again and again when managers are evaluating a team member.

jQuery and its cousins are great, and by all means use them if it makes it easier to develop your application. If you're developing a library on the other hand, please take a moment to consider if you actually need jQuery as a dependency. Maybe you can include a few lines of utility code, and forgo the requirement. If you're only targeting more modern browsers, you might not need anything more than what the browser ships with. At the very least, make sure you know what jQuery is doing for you, and what it's not. Some developers believe that jQuery is protecting us from a great demon of browser incompatibility when, in truth, post-IE8, browsers are pretty easy to deal with on their own.

If a government proposes to abandon one of the fundamental principles of justice, there had better be a powerful reason. Equality before the law is not ditched lightly. Surely? Well, read this and judge for yourself. The UK government, like that of the US and 13 other EU members, wants to set up a separate judicial system, exclusively for the use of corporations. While the rest of us must take our chances in the courts, corporations across the EU and US will be allowed to sue governments before a tribunal of corporate lawyers. They will be able to challenge the laws they don’t like, and seek massive compensation if these are deemed to affect their “future anticipated profits”.

Dads get a lot of credit. They have their own holiday, special gift baskets and the biggest serving at the dinner table. Too often, little brothers get overlooked. They don’t get anywhere near the kind of recognition they deserve, and that’s a shame. At the end of the day, while your dad might be a key figure in your life, you’ll find that the person who’s right there next to you, through thick and thin, is actually your brother.

A promise represents the eventual result of an asynchronous operation. The primary way of interacting with a promise is through its then method, which registers callbacks to receive either a promise's eventual value or the reason why the promise cannot be fulfilled. This specification details the behavior of the then method, providing an interoperable base which all Promises/A+ conformant promise implementations can be depended on to provide. As such, the specification should be considered very stable. Although the Promises/A+ organization may occasionally revise this specification with minor backward-compatible changes to address newly-discovered corner cases, we will integrate large or backward-incompatible only after careful consideration, discussion, and testing.

There are over 600 Google web fonts to choose from which is a good and bad thing – the good being there are so many good ones to choose from, the bad being having to sift through them to find the perfect one. When you’re running large scale sites that get hundreds of thousands of visitors a month, paid services like Typekit just aren’t worth the money. You’re much better off saving thousands of dollars by using Google web fonts. Honestly, around 60% of Google web fonts are just downright rubbish (sorry to hurt anyone’s feelings!), so I wanted to create this post showing the best fonts I’ve come across. These are fonts I’ve used myself in projects and themes and recommend to any web designers. I may have missed some other brilliant fonts, so do mention any other great ones in the comments.

Doing so has several advantages over hosting jQuery on your server(s): decreased latency, increased parallelism, and better caching. In this post, I will expand upon those three benefits of Google’s CDN and show you a couple examples of how you can make use of the service.

Why engineers are good in bed – is an age-old belief, said to be linked more to the actions of a PR company and a wannabe model in the 1980s, than any one case study. Engineers are said to have an impeccable conduct record inside the covers of a bed. Once in a bed, engineers curl up, sleep and will not be heard to snore even once throughout the night. The reasons for this are still up for discussion between academics, although tiredness and workload have been mooted as a generally acceptable reason for this.

A Czech word roughly meaning 'drudge worker', from the play 'R.U.R.: Rossums's Universal Robots' by the Bohemian writer Karel Capek. It has since become an inspiration for many science fiction writers but also engineers. A robot is an integration of mechanics, electronics and software. It represents the physical manifestation of information technology - a versatile machine which can carry out the instructions of an intelligent system, e.g. computer, the reverse of virtual reality. The ISO definition of a robot is "automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes"

Robots have been proven to deliver a host of benefits in a wide variety of applications. Manufacturers introducing robots to their production processes have typically seen a significant transformation in their productivity and efficiency. The International Federation of Robotics recently undertook a survey that identified the top 10 reasons that manufacturers invest in robots. ABB has now built on that survey and developed a Guide to help you better understand the "10 good reasons for investing in robots" with real-life case studies from companies and integrators who exemplify each one of the reasons.
