Research meets industry: A mine planning methodology for space | FNR – Luxembourg National Research Fund

https://www.fnr.lu/research-with-impact-fnr-highlight/mine-planning-methodology-for-space/

Saved by uncleflo on September 4th, 2022.

When we wrote about Miguel Olivares Mendez in the 2017 edition of Spotlight on Young Researchers, the researcher was working on an FNR JUMP project, focussing on developing algorithms for autonomous drones. The robotics scientist has continued to build his research career in Luxembourg – 5 years later, Miguel is a Professor leading a research group with a focus on space robotics. Luxembourg start-up LuxAI, with their socially assistive robot QTrobot, has been making waves on an international level since it was created. The FNR has supported the project from its inception through the development of a prototype, helping bridge the gap between lab and commercialisation. We speak to LuxAI founders Dr Pouyan Ziafati and Dr Aida Nazarikhorram about the LuxAI journey so far; how QTrobot came to be and how parents can now have a QTrobot at home.

Waterfall model - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall_model

Saved by uncleflo on January 18th, 2019.

The waterfall model is a relatively linear sequential design approach for certain areas of engineering design. In software development, it tends to be among the less iterative and flexible approaches, as progress flows in largely one direction ("downwards" like a waterfall) through the phases of conception, initiation, analysis, design, construction, testing, deployment and maintenance. The waterfall development model originated in the manufacturing and construction industries; where the highly structured physical environments meant that design changes became prohibitively expensive much sooner in the development process. When first adopted for software development, there were no recognized alternatives for knowledge-based creative work.

An Introduction to Lean Canvas – Steve Mullen – Medium

https://medium.com/@steve_mullen/an-introduction-to-lean-canvas-5c17c469d3e0

Saved by uncleflo on January 4th, 2019.

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important tasks you can perform is getting your idea(s) out from your head into a tangible format so that you can communicate that with others. In the past, this usually meant a well-researched business plan, that would usually take weeks (more like months) to create. I turn to the Lean Canvas to help me quickly formulate possible business models, product launches, campaigns and variations of, and communicate this with my stakeholders for my Lead Flow Method work. Having the Lean Canvas as a visual guide made this part “communicating the model/idea” so much more effective — and I think the most valuable function of the tool. The problem with business plans for startups & entrepreneurs are that they’re a waste of time, don’t get me wrong a well-researched business plan is important but only at the right stage of your business (usually when you’re in growth/investment). This quote from Steve Blank sums up this point in case: “Business Plan: a document investors make you write, that they don’t read”. The key fundamental to Lean methodology is the elimination of waste — this includes time, processes, inventory and more. So as a lean startup you need a quicker way to get ideas out of your head, you need to stay lean & avoid waste — so, it’s time to introduce Lean Canvas.

Linux Daemon Writing HOWTO

http://www.netzmafia.de/skripten/unix/linux-daemon-howto.html

Saved by uncleflo on January 4th, 2019.

A daemon (or service) is a background process that is designed to run autonomously, with little or not user intervention. The Apache web server http daemon (httpd) is one such example of a daemon. It waits in the background listening on specific ports, and serves up pages or processes scripts, based on the type of request. Creating a daemon in Linux uses a specific set of rules in a given order. Knowing how they work will help you understand how daemons operate in userland Linux, but can operate with calls to the kernel also. In fact, a few daemons interface with kernel modules that work with hardware devices, such as external controller boards, printers, and PDAs. They are one of the fundamental building blocks in Linux that give it incredible flexibility and power. Throughout this HOWTO, a very simple daemon will be built in C. As we go along, more code will be added, showing the proper order of execution required to get a daemon up and running.

On the Comparison of the Long Penetration Mode (LPM) Supersonic Counterflowing Jet to the Supersonic Screech Jet

https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20150016244.pdf

Saved by uncleflo on December 7th, 2016.

The authors provide a brief overview of the classic tonal screech noise problem created by underexpanded supersonic jets, briefly describing the fluid dynamic-acoustics feedback mechanism that has been long established as the basis for this well-known aeroacoustics problem. This is followed by a description of the Long Penetration Mode (LPM) supersonic underexpanded counterflowing jet phenomenon which has been demonstrated in several wind tunnel tests and modeled in several computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The authors provide evidence from test and CFD analysis of LPM that indicates that acoustics feedback and fluid interaction seen in LPM are analogous to the aeroacoustics interactions seen in screech jets. Finally, the authors propose applying certain methodologies to LPM which have been developed and successfully demonstrated in the study of screech jets and mechanically induced excitation in fluid oscillators for decades. The authors conclude that the large body of work done on jet screech, other aeroacoustic phenomena, and fluid oscillators can have direct application to the study and applications of LPM counterflowing supersonic cold flow jets.

The HTTP OPTIONS method and potential for self-describing RESTful APIs

http://zacstewart.com/2012/04/14/http-options-method.html

Saved by uncleflo on December 2nd, 2016.

The OPTIONS method is a somewhat obscure part of the HTTP standard that could be used today with a strong impact on the interconnectedness of the interwebs while requiring minimal effort. It's role is well defined in RFC2616, yet no web services that I can find are taking advantage of it. What is the HTTP OPTIONS method? To quote the spec: This method allows the client to determine the options and/or requirements associated with a resource, or the capabilities of a server, without implying a resource action or initiating a resource retrieval. Minimally, the response should be a 200 OK and have an Allow header with a list of HTTP methods that may be used on this resource. As an authorized user on an API, if you were to request OPTIONS /users/me, you should receive something like...

Full Stack Basics for the Non-Developer

Saved by uncleflo on October 21st, 2016.

Let's visualize and talk about the "full stack" of web development. From a developer's standpoint, we're probably talking about the layers of code involved in delivering a website to an end user. But let's back up further for a moment and just talk about a stack of things. Given all the different device, language, and application options out there, many stacks of things in this case! There's the stacks involved for phone application development, stacks for websites, stacks for console gaming, and more! To avoid head explosions to the extent possible possible, I'm going to focus on Metal Toad's most common stack.

OpenX Technology Enables Publishers to Deliver Billions of Ad Impressions

http://openx.com/features/openx-technology/

Saved by uncleflo on September 16th, 2014.

For publishers to maximize their advertising revenue, they need to precisely target the delivery of advertising to the right audience, at the right time. An ad server platform must provide an easy way to describe a target audience, and then deliver ads to that audience with pinpoint accuracy. And since every business has different ways of describing their audience, an ad server should flex to accommodate different targeting methodologies. In addition, companies must continually decide how to optimize the delivery of both premium and unsold inventory to maximize revenue. OpenX leverages advanced algorithms to help publishers optimize their ad revenue, and offers unique options for targeting users.

Style Tiles

Saved by uncleflo on July 16th, 2014.

Style Tiles are a design deliverable consisting of fonts, colors and interface elements that communicate the essence of a visual brand for the web. They help form a common visual language between the designers and the stakeholders and provide a catalyst for discussions around the preferences and goals of the client. Style Tiles are similar to the paint chips and fabric swatches an interior designer gets approval on before designing a room.
An interior designer doesn't design three different rooms for a client at the first kick-off meeting, so why do Web designers design three different webpage mockups?
