This article is here to provide tips for getting EAC to work in linux under Wine. Wine is an application layer that allows you to run Windows-based programs under linux. EAC 1.0b3 will run under Wine, but you will need to do some tweaking. Specific instructions will be provided specifically for the gentoo distribution, but these instructions can be adapted for use in other distributions such as Ubuntu.

This guide was made for EAC version 1.0 beta 3 and will not completely work with earlier versions. Versions 0.99 or earlier should use the blowfish guide. This is meant to be a no-frills guide with little extra info.

Some ISO-burning applications create plain ISO 9660 images, while others interpret the ISO format as they like. Nero, from Ahead Software, uses the NRG suffix to name its ISO images. ISO images created by Easy CD Creator (from Roxio, Inc., which was spun off from Adaptec, Inc. in September, 2000) contain some lead-in and lead-out bytes around the core of the 2048-byte sector. This explains why ISO images created by Easy CD Creator cannot be burnt by all burning packages (for example, CDRWin complains about the file not being a multiple of the sector size). On the other hand, Easy CD Creator can burn plain ISO images written by other packages.

Most of the files above are disk images. Download the file to your C: drive, put a fresh disk in your A: drive, then click on the file to create the bootdisk. The W2K Pro disks are zipped images from the MS CD. Best bet is to download them, upzip them to a new folder where you also put makeboot.exe and makebt32.exe into and then run one of the makeboot utils depending on if you're in dos or windows to create the diskset. Or, one can use Winimage to just create a single bootdisk. The Win9X OEM disks are Images of the Microsoft bootdisks that came with your OS. They put the utilities you need in a ramdrive, or virtual disk which is usually the next drive letter up from your hard drive partitions. Use my Custom disks for a faster, easier to use utility.

R-Linux is a powerful and handy utility that enables you to recover files from the Ext2FS/Ext3FS file system used in Linux and some Unixes. It recovers files from any local disk lost or damaged due to virus attack, system crash or power failure, even if the file records are lost. However, it fails to recover damaged RAIDs or stripe sets and does not feature network capabilities. It also has the ability to scan a disk in search of previous partitions and restores the files present in them. In the case of disks with bad sectors, the program first copy the entire disk or part of it to an image file and then process it. The application also searches for files on devices such as CD, HD, DVD, floppy disk, USB drive, Compact Flash Card, Memory Sticks, ZIP drive, and other removable media. It recognizes Dynamic, Basic, BSD (UNIX) and GPT partitions layout schema and Apple partition map. It also includes a hexadecimal disk and file editor.

Here you can download the freedb database. The complete archives are available as .tar.bz2, the update-archives are available as .tar.bz2 files. If you don't know what a .bz2-archive is and how to uncompress it, visit the official bzip2 and libbzip2 home page. Please bear in mind that the UNIX format archives cannot be completely extracted on a FAT file system (see FAQ for more info). If you want to extract them on an NTFS file system, take a look at our FAQ on how to do so properly.

An ISO file is an image of a CD or DVD. You can access the files contained within the ISO (without installing any software or having to burn the image to disc) by mounting the image and unmount the image when you are done with it. Here’s how.

I do a great deal of experimenting with virtual computer environments and utilize ISO images quite often instead of constantly going back to the same CD repeatedly. Ubuntu makes it easy to create an ISO image from your CD or DVD.
