You could call it one giant leap for 3D printing. California’s Rocket Lab just completed its 100th additive-printed Rutherford Engine as it targets cheaper rocket launches and space missions. The company has been on a tear since it created the world’s first 3D-printed, electric turbo-pump fed engine in 2013. Since then, it's launched 70 Rutherford engines to space with various companies—with the most recent one being on June 29. “The Rutherford engine has played an integral part in enabling Rocket Lab to make frequent and reliable launch a reality for small satellites,” Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said in a statement. “It’s a testament to our innovative design and manufacturing teams that we’ve achieved everything we set out to do in just a few short years; an entirely new type of rocket engine that delivers unmatched performance, boasts a proven record of 100% launch reliability and can be manufactured quickly and efficiently.” From here, the production is going to step up. The company plans to produce 200 Rutherford engines in the next year, on the back of improved 3D printing facilities in Huntington Beach, California. These engines will launch from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, and Launch Complex 2 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops Island, Virginia.

Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service is rapidly launching satellites — here's everything we know While it's still in its early stages, Starlink could very well change the internet for billions of people around the world. In our Starlink review, we were impressed by the new satellite internet service being rolled out by tech billionaire and Tesla founder Elon Musk, but because the service is in beta, there's lots of questions people have. SpaceX has launched over 1,500 Starlink satellites to date. Its most recent mission went off successfully and should continue to help cover the northern U.S., Canada and the U.K. NASA and SpaceX have also come to an information-sharing agreement to avoid orbital collisions. SpaceX is also nearing an agreement with the FCC to have it's satellites orbit at an even lower range, which should only improve signal and connectivity.

Das Salzburger Start-up Reef Interactive erstellt mithilfe von Sonar-, Video- und Satellitendaten dreidimensionale Unterwasserkarten in hoher Auflösung und bietet so einen neuen Einblick in die Unterwasserwelt. Bisher wurden über 120 Riffe im Roten Meer eingescannt und in einer App verpackt. Verfügbar ist diese zum Start für Android-Handys und Tablets sowie für iOS. Aktuell kann man bereits fünf Tauchplätze erkunden, bis Anfang April sollen dann sämtliche gescannten Riffe und Wracks zur Verfügung stehen.

In its current configuration, COMMStellation™ will provide 100% global coverage with up to 15 times the speed and 10 times the total bandwidth capacity of a MEO constellation of comparable satellites.
